The new version of hackmaster uses the 3d6 method with some modifications and I have been a fan of the rolling system since the 70's. I think they will add some alternative rolling systems who feel they need to be more uber but it wont happen in games I run.

I tend to use several methods of dice rolling.

    - 4d6 discarding the lowest, rollin 2 full sets of stats and you can choose which set you want to go with
    - point buy, using 25-28 pts depending on the setting
    - all stats start at 8 and you roll 2d6 to each

In the case of the 2nd &3rd method I will take 4 pts from you (1 or 2 pts from multiple stats) and give them back to you starting at 3rd level. If your character has been acting smart, I bump his int or working out more, I bump his str. If you slack off or have a traumatic experience, I may take some back. They are always yours but I put them where I think they are due.

Havent had complaints yet beyond when a character is getting beat up, he might say "well if I wasnt down a point in strength" blah, blah, blah.........deal. 1 point wont save you from githyanki death squad.
