if you make things easy = more players subs = short term profits
if you make things hard = more hardcore subs= long term profits
one of these leads to the death of a game, ill let you figure it out

Surely both lead to the death of a game.
You need a difficulty/learning curve.
It's no good just pandering to one type or the other.
Eventually the new people who need things to be easy as they get used to the game and learn how to play are going to get bored of that and will start wanting challenges to test their new skills.
Eventually at least some of the old/"hardcore" people are going to move on to a different game or at the very least people become unable to play due to real life events (too busy, death, etc).
Because of this there always needs to be new people bought in to replace the people that inevitably leave who can then be built up to want the challenges and become invested in the game.
Not really sure what point you're trying to make here. That you want more challenging higher level content? That you want all content to be harder so that it pushes new players away from the game?
The way i see it is one of those bowls of porridge must be just right, but which one is it?
How about both?
With 4 difficulties settings is surely possible.
Up until the point when casuals start whining that elite is to hard for them
i'm not that sure about that, why a casual palyer can't play this game on a long term?
and why an hardcore player can't get bored of this game?
I'm pretty sure that both ways leads to a different target of player, that's why we have difficulty on quests right?
I think that this game has much to offer to both the players.
