    Default Need Paladin/Monk Solo build

    I recently ran into a guy who was running something along the lines of 6 Pal/2 Monk/1 Wiz
    This was my first time seeing a build like this, and I was quite impressed by it's viability.
    He had great stats, all across the board. Great health, mana, saves, ac. Unfortunately
    I had to jet before I could get a chance to ask him how he made such a wonderful character.
    And I haven't seen him on since.

    Anyways, I was wondering if I could get help making such a build. I want to make a character
    that is built as perfect as possible, so I could play him seriously, do end game content and
    eventually TR.

    So to make a tidy list, here is what I'm looking for:
    1) Paladin primary class
    2) Makes use of monk's granted abilities
    3) Effective solo build early on
    4) Self sufficient in groups and elites
    5) (Perhaps integrate rogue for evasion, would it be possible to get a decent DD skill with only a few rogue levels?)

    A little more info about the toon I ran into, he used a quarter staff, I imagine to stay centered. But when I look at his character on my.ddo now it shows him using a greatsword. I wish I could ask him the logic behind it but I haven't been able to talk to him. Can anyone care to guess why? Wouldn't he be incapable of benefiting from the monk part of his character?

    I hope I'm not asking much, I'd like to take this game seriously, so I don't want to make any mistakes in making my character.

    I use a variation of a "the Solar Phoenix" a personal spin off of an older version of the build 12 paladin, 7 monk, 1 rogue. With a starting int of 14 I'm able to do traps just fine, but I don't have spot so I can't see them 'til I run into them. At 3 monk I "took fist of light" for self healing. I currently heal for 3-6 per hit when my healing curse is on an enemy, once I get everything set it will be 4-8 per hit. It's great at staying alive.

    That build calls for 36 point build, and I'm looking for a build for my first serious character, I'm currently at 32.
    I'm also not looking to put more than 2 into monk primarily because I was just wanting the granted bonuses. But the Phoenix build does look interesting.
    Is it common to only go 12 into paladin? The spell level four self buffs look pretty nice.

    If you drop the Str to 14 it makes it a 32 point build. And you'll only lose out on 1 hit / 1 dmg. That's that I altered anyhow to make it work. The second link is for a 18 paladin / 2 monk that has some of the goodness but misses out on a lot of the monkyness and the healing curse, but some like it better.

    The 12/7/1 split works GREAT with the Grandmaster of Flowers Epic Destiny.
    I'm not sure what people would recommend for the 18/2 split.

    I did One of my paladin lives on my TR junkie char as 10pal 9monk 1rog and it was a pretty dang survivable character.

    9 monk (dark) gets you 25% incorp, Touch of Death, and 20% healing amp, and 1d6 sneak dice.

    1 rogue gives you haste boost I, 1d6 + 3 sneak, and opens up UMD

    10 pal gives you exhaulted smite II, divine might II, and toughness IV if you want to spend points on it.

    EDIT: if you went Drow, you could get damage bonuses to shortswords and use them centered, but you cannot do touch of death with weapons.

    I have been pretty critical of the paladin class, but imho not undeservedly so. If you want to do very much DPS you will want a deep splash of something... if you want survivability you will want less of a splash, but remember that just because you are extremely survivable does NOT mean that you will be able to solo every quest on elite. Sometimes you have to be able to kill things to finish the quest, and fighting a group of healing mobs with infinite mana on a low DPS toon is a nightmare.

    P.S. despite how well this build actually worked, you might expect to have a few problems here and there with grouping due to the odd split.

    Just a few more things to add...

    You can still use a weapon like a greatsword and gain monk "Defensive" benefits like evasion and AC bonus, you just cannot be in a stance or use the monk strikes without a Centered weapon.

    The only reason to take that one Wizard level must have been for a free Metamagic feat, but that's the kind of thing that shouldn't be taken lightly. You said that you want this to be your first "Serious" character so that means that you should probably take the planning part seriously too. Please, only consider a 1 wizard splash if you feel that you absolutely MUST have that meta feat, and can find no other conceivable way to fit it into the build (that meta was probably Quicken but i cannot say for sure, Maximize could be worthwhile if you already have a torc.)

    If you DO do the 18/2 build (that was my 2nd pal PL) the best advice that I can give is to remember that your Handwraps damage will never go above 1d6 without special items, and that your AC will be low in robes no matter how much you try to boost it. Luckily I did that 18/2 life before MotU hit so I had fairly decent AC in robes, but with the AC changes you have to be exceptionally geared to have even moderate AC in robes. If you plan on not wearing robes... then perhaps you should look into something else to splash.

    Edit: QUESTION! Will waiting for Oversized at level 18 hurt my damage output earlier on? The guide says to get it at 18, but wouldn't that mean not using two longswords earlier?

    ALSO IMPORTANT: The build says to get weapon focus: longsword which I cannot find in the feats.

    At the lowest levels, Handwraps or a Quarterstaff will work better than two longswords even if you already had OTWF. The longswords will start being better around lvl 9-12 i'd guess.

    Notes:
    you will not be able to use the Kama till lvl 8, but its one hell of a kama... my old Clonk used that thing well into the teens. Using a Kama in your offhand will keep you from taking a to-hit penalty for not having OTWF until lvl 18

    prior to lvl 8 just use that Q-staff, its a solid piece of wood.

    I did not send you handwraps, but you should ALWAYS have one pair on you of some kind to deal with oozes and rust monsters. (or a blueshine quarterstaff)

    Lifesheild of Invul outfit will be the best armor you can get until lvl 13 or so when you can get the outfit from the 2nd half of attack on stormreach.

    Wands and potions, you can never have enough imho (those candy canes cast slow, do not try to use them in mid battle... they are for filling up HP between fights)

    20 shreds of tapestry, put these in your bank for now and when you hit lvl 11 take them to the Upper Necropolis and trade them for the Minos Legens helmet at one of the quest givers up there.

    here is a build idea for you

    Well, I'm just finishing up a barbarian life and going to do pali next. My plan is stick build, pali/monk/rogue, can do all traps (assuming you have trap gear and tools), high UMD, self healing/buffing, etc.

    I don't know how viable for 32 point build I would need to play with it. I suggest for something like this use at least +2 tomes for all stats. I had a +3 supreme last life and this is 36 point build, but you can probably make something similar work for a 32 point build with +2 tomes on all stats.

    Talking off the beaten path idea

    i know you said Pally should be main but i have a lvl 20 completed build i think you would like.
    12 cleric 6 paladin 2 monk
    Fort 51
    ref 43
    will 48
    (unbuffed)
    in paladin (permanent) stance 745-800 hp depending on lvl 21 feat
    SP with nothing but a magi item (no GS yet) 1250 sp (is enough to heal a party if used properly)
    Unarmed is pretty bad, but i am redoing his stats for more dmg in melee for a little less Spell Points/damage
    Blade Barrier hits for 189-210 damage
    AC 48-57 and i can pull over 70 with Barkskin and a whitedragonscale robe and some other stuff...
    solo really effective and has a
    Lay On Hands hits for 175-178 on of those

    The build is to survive were others cant. It succeeds.

    My Main (Ulyn on Sarlona) is fairly similar to this.

    I went 7pal / 7rog / 6mnk with slightly different stat configuration.

    My feats etc are very different as it is a dragonmarked halfling build.

    My orginal intent was to have a build that I could fit 4 PRE on as a test and it turned into my favorite character to play. Currently Ninja Spy / Assassin / Knight of chalice. Was waiting for Dragon marked heir etc.

    I am still sorting out optimal stats/gear while I am wrapping up a TR on another build and working destines before I TR this into v.2. It is a super fun and effective build and really look forward to TRing as the game has changed considerably since I leveled up originally and I imagine I'll have a much easier time soloing now than I did during my first life.
