    Default New player build help tempest 1 / Kensai 2 / Evasion

    I am a new player to DDO and haven't played PnP since highschool (Some time ago) I have played many other MMORPG's and beta tested/developed addons for most of them. I have only been playing DDO for a week so I am sorry if some of the choices in this build is newbish. I am level 5 currently with this build. I can't figure out which feats to choose next and maybe I chose some too early/late to take advantage of fighter bonus. I got to level 18 on the build and can't figure where to go next with it.

    overall, not too shabby. i would take the 2nd rogue level earlier and maybe re-order some feats, drop Lightning Reflexes (though thats just my opinion)


    definitely not to bad for a first attempt at a build

    Take the rogue level maybe after fighter 1? Also what to put in lightening reflexes place... Maybe power critical. Is Power Critical a clicky or a passive? If passive then might be nice with the already crit reliant DPS of the Kopesh? Remember new here never been above level 4 so I wouldn't know o.0

    If you only have access to a +1 DEX tome, is there some reason you didn't start DEX 16 / INT 10? That would let you put all your lvl-ups into STR.

    power critical wouldn't be a bad idea, its a passive feat, but IIRC has Weapon Focus as a prereq

    Unless your going for trap skills (Which would be tough to maintain with the 12 fighter lvls)...I would lower Intel to 8 and boost your CON.

    Your low CON score is the one weakness I see in this build. Also, I see you took rogue Damage boost at lvl 1. There might be a better enhancement to take there, maybe not. Otherwise looks like a decent build.

    Also...you need wis of 14 to cast ranger spells. You can get a +6 item at lvl 13 to get you there.

    14 CON is lowish, but not so low i'd worry about it


    i do however agree with your assessment of the Trapping potential of this build. dropping INT would be perfectly fine

    Unless there's been a change, a level 6 ranger requires a wisdom score of 11 to cast
    their level one spells.

    Unless your going for trap skills (Which would be tough to maintain with the 12 fighter lvls)...I would lower Intel to 8 and boost your CON.

    Your low CON score is the one weakness I see in this build. Also, I see you took rogue Damage boost at lvl 1. There might be a better enhancement to take there, maybe not. Otherwise looks like a decent build.

    Also...you need wis of 14 to cast ranger spells. You can get a +6 item at lvl 13 to get you there.
    Yeah me and my wife are playing and I am the trap monkey of the group so I use my ranger levels to maximize search and spot and my 2 rogue levels to maximize disable and pick locks. +2 or higher tools and I was figuring id be at least decent

    it is my inexperience I guess since I am a trapper I opted for 2 in int cause I figured If I was going to use a tome that the math would make sense to do a 1-1 to start and then do a 2-1 with a tome. Another to Dex would have cost me 2 point and 2 to int cost me 2 points so figured a tome of +1 str would be better... But then again I don't understand tome usage yet either so there could be something im not seeing.

    Your evasion is good enough for spells but it won't be good enough for traps. You'll be a trapper like an artificer is a trapper.

    At level 18 you'll need +35 reflex save vs. traps without Greater Heroism to do something like the crucible elite. Or you could just get lucky.

    I'd add two more levels of rogue to help fill in the gaps in skills. It would also give you uncanny dodge.

    Two more levels of rogue I would lose Tempest I and free ITWF. At that point there is no point of being 4 ranger so then it would be a Kensai 2 Asassin 1 build... My play style does not include sneaking or backstabbing. The goal is to make Kensai 2 / Tempest 1 / Evasion work not to Play Kensai 2 Assassin.

    Not bad but could use a few tweaks. For instance, there's no need to take Fighter Attack Boost or Critical Accuracy any higher than level 2 in each, which is the minimum required for Kensai I and II. Also, +2 tomes for dex and int would greatly help if you can get them, and they're far more attainable now than ever before. If you absolutely have to get by with just a +1 dex then spend 1 level up point into it to reach 17, and your rogue skills will take more of a hit. But you definitely want to max out UMD regardless of what class your wife is playing. Even if she's a cleric, the ability to use raise dead scrolls, restoration, displacement, fire shield, and eventually greater heroism and heal with little or no chance of failure is just too good to pass up when you already have rogue levels. A build something like this may do the trick for you.

    Couple of comments about Stan's build vs mine:

    • Turbine got rid of the dmg penalty on Precision and it's now a much more useful feat; I'd take that rather than OTWF if you think you need a to-hit bonus and/or want to do more dmg to 100% fort mobs.
    • Cleave & GC are pre-reqs for Overwhelming Critical, which is why I added them to my build; his build has neither.
    • I can see he staggered out the rgr & ftr lvls to get the most out of his skill pts, but that means backloading ITWF & GTWF until lvl 18. Unless your plan is to use 2H weapons until then, IMHO that's an unacceptable delay in your DPS feats just to have trap skills while leveling.

    A nice thing about this type of build is that you have some feats available to play with. Precision is absolutely worth consideration now, and may indeed be a better choice than OTWF, particularly if you also want to occasionally use sword & board, 2-handers, or pull out a bow to make use of your Manyshot. It just depends on whether you intend to stay in TWF mode all the time or not, because unless they changed it with the expansion, you can't use Precision and Power Attack at the same time.

    Cleave and Great Cleave are certainly options if you want to build toward Overwhelming Critical in epic levels. You could swap out Improved Sunder (especially if you don't plan to raid much, which may be the case if you're just planning to duo with your wife) or Power Critical, and be able to fit OC with your 2 epic feat slots.

    And yes, the build I posted does stagger the ranger levels to make better use of skill points. The net result is a stronger, more capable character from level 18 onward, with improved trapsmithing all the way along. But yes, it does come at the cost of temporarily sacrificing some TWF damage output until you reach level 18. Unfortunately there's no good way to do both, so I opted for the better skills given the comment that the OP intends to handle traps while duoing with his wife. The alternative of getting GTWF as early as possible will give you more power sooner, but will ultimately result in a weaker character since the hit to skill points can never be made up. Given the dungeon scaling in a 2 person group, I wouldn't expect the temporarily lower DPS to be much problem anyway.

    If you do go with something like my build, then it indeed would make sense to primarily use 2-handers until you reach level 18 (or until you get Improved Two Weapon Fighting).

    It will be fine, though you might find yourself struggling a bit with some occasional traps or locks around lvl 12+, mostly depending on your gear and knowledge of trap locations. Though I'd recommend at least taking stunning blow instead of greater weapon focus. Kensais already get plenty of to-hit bonus, and the new AC system has grossly devalued to-hit bonuses as well, to the point where an individual +1 will probably actually have *zero* benefit more often than not. It's honestly not worth the feat on its own, and it's only a prereq for Kensai III so you don't have to bother with it.
