    Default severe FPS spikes

So I have had this issue somewhat since ive started playing DDO. ive gone through 3 different graphics cards now, one being a 8600 GTS 256mb (on medium settings low res mode) one being a GTS 8800 512mb (tried both high res and low res high and medium settings) and now on my newer but relatively close to the same card is my GTS 250 512mb(same as before ran on both high res and low res on high and medium settings).. for some reason this seems to not be graphic card related as I am able to adjust all different settings higher and lower and barely effect FPS, but I am for some reason Always catching what feels like lag spikes. the in game FPS drops drastically most the time but somtimes the spike will happen (to the point where the fps doesnt change because the screen freezes) and the fps will already be back up by the time the spikes done. It does seem to drop from an average of 40-60 in most areas down to about 25-30 in major condensed areas (ie: center of market) but it seems like almost any specific movement is causing lag spikes and its not really graphic card related as the spikes will seem to happen even when staring at a wall at 70+fps. it can happen from something as simple as pressing a hireling to come to me, or from just pressing swing, it seems to be initiated due to possibly my internet connection? or maybe my processor just lacks the power needed?
my vista score is a 4.7 (processor being the lowest therefore making my score 4.7 )
im running a pentium D dual core 3.0 ghz processor with 2mb l2 cache (not the greatest this is where im assuming my slowness is coming from? but people with less seem to perform smoother.. atleast more consistant..)
i have tried windows xp 64 bit and now am running vista ultimate 64 bit and it seems to be worse on vista then it was in xp
i have 6 gb of ram (4gb [2x2] kingston, 2gb [1x2] stock) which i thought also may be part of the issue having different ram? they are in the proper slots and bios shows as dual interleaved and have passed memtest in the past (somewhat recently)
As i said am running Geforce GTS 250 512mb but even with my much crappier 8600 gts 256mb was still experiencing these same spikes (actually was pushing higher fps with medium settings on low resolution textures and still recieved spikes just not as many)
my graphics driver is newest from nvidia, windows was JUST installed recently so should be no errors there. game has been reinstalled multiple times during this 2 year or so adventure. I suppose I should just go back to low resolution because it had fewer spikes but my computer really should be able to handle it.. i went through alot to make it capable thinking it wouldnt be an issue to atleast run smooth.. especially after the upgrade from 8600 to the 250.. but even dropping all the settings down i still get spikes.. i tried syncing with refresh rate.. set refresh rate to same as monitor with sync on and off.. tried multiple different graphics settings.. but even setting the 250 to worse settings then then 8600 i still experience great FPS with random spikes..
possibly a motherboard issue? i dont know i have a nforce 4 series amd/intel edition SLI x16 motherboard that was one of the first of its kind and pretty outdates aswell as incompatable with most things.. might be causing some sort of issue there.. im really baffled though its kinda driving me nuts.

let me know what you guys think ill be off to bed for now... will be back tomorrow evening to check in.. thanks for your input

let me know what you guys think
I think it's really hard to read with the wall o'text and bold.

Also, video issues are more than just your video card. Post your DXDiag and others will assist.

I agree, the bold text really hurts my eyes.

my apologies i knew better then to write an explanation to such an epic problem.. heres my dxdiag hope it helps.. i seemed to have reduced some of the lag by keeping it at 75hertz and syncd with refresh rate but that only fixed the new-ish more apparent lag spikes now its back to the way it was previously (lag spike every 5 seconds or so). after further thought and inspection the lag spikes seem more random than i had thought. dont know if i had mentioned this previously but these are all the things ive replaced or swapped out atleast once while having the issue still:
hard drive (from one thats still inside to new one both in dxdiag)
    soundcard
    graphics card (3 cards)
    power supply
thermal paste (just to clarify its not dirty/worn should be good on both processor and graphics card)
LCD monitor (upgraded to acer x173w from previous hp 15inch)
operating system (xp x64, vista x64, xp media center edition x86)
Ram has been added to try to improve problem
all while still having same issue.. its not as major now but still irritating that every few seconds i lag spike and my fps drops so dramatically when it runs SO smoothly at other moments..
Anyways sorry another book LOL... heres the DX-Diag hope it helps:

If you've had the problem since you started playing in 2009, despite hardware upgrades, I would start looking beyond the graphics card and DX (since DX10 and 11 are newer to DDO than 2009). If it seems to happen frequently in public instances, it could be a connection issue. It dosent come up as often in DDO due to the limited number of public instances, but other people can cause lag spikes on your PC. If they have a poor connection, it can take a moment for say a Paladin's Aura to update on both your PC and the other guys poorly connected PC.

You could double check to make sure that your sound drivers are up to date, and maybe disable things like Stenciled Shadows, but if it only happens in public instances I wouldn't worry to much about it. Maybe check your connection, ensure your routers firmware is up to date, boot freeloaders who are connected to your router, stuff like that.
The problem is never how to get new, innovative thoughts into your mind, but how to get old ones out. Every mind is a building filled with archaic furniture. Clean out a corner of your mind and creativity will instantly fill it.

Assuming that it isn't a power supply issue, hard to read your formatting. *ouch, my eyes*

My first guesses are your hard drive or USB polling is causing your problems.

as far as i knew ddo was still only running in dx9 on all 3 video cards. i havent checked but im pretty sure that dx10 box wasnt selectable in advanced options, my cards are fairly old cards they are just good for there time and should still have no issue. I have gave it some thought and its possible the hard drive is weak and thats part of the problem but it has twice the cache of the previous one and is a reasonable hard drive for its time (WD raptor 10krpm 80gig 16mb cache). the swap seemed to show no improvements but it is still the most likely i suppose, going to run ddo in windowed mode with resource monitor up tonight and see what happens during those moments maybe ill get some better clarity. Will post further info this evening or tomorrow, thanks for the input.

(was hoping to hear "turn off v-sync" or something, like on every other nvidia card back in the day to fix the FPS problems lol, never that easy to diagnose anymore)

If I had to take a guess based on your diagnoses and my prior history on DDO, I'd wager either Hard Drive or Fragmented DDO files. DDO has gotten progressively worse at the ability to load things like animations, icons, sounds, and other assets (being the .dat files they load from are becoming quite large, and may be an application process that isn't nearly as optimized as it was years ago). I never got hitching to the degree you are stating, but I did notice that most of the hitching I was having (such as casting new spell that DDO session, hitching from the first few times dogdog went to bit a kobold, or the 15 seconds it would take to load the enhancement screen on my character window) in the past 3 years of DDO vanished when I got a solid state hard drive.

I have no clue if this would be the proper fix for you, but as I notice, you do at least have 2 hard drives on your computer. One option you could attempt is to take DDO and install it on the hard drive you aren't currently using to run DDO (of which, this installation could be as simple as copying your DDO folder over with all of its contents, you don't need to use the actual installer to conduct this test).

What motherboard do you have? Some system that took the Pentium D(P4 based dual core) could/can also use Core 2s and some Pentium Dual Cores(please do not confuse this with the Pentium D as the Pentium Dual Core is based off the Core 2/Quad design and NOT the P4).

Also not that Turbine has worked hand in hand with ATI is enabling DX10 and 11 features in this game. So ATI cards have an edge over Nvidia cards. XFire works SLI wont for 1 example of this tom foolerly.

Havent had time today and work tomorrow but should be able to run some tests tomorrow evening, it is a Pentium D 3.0ghz (dual core). Its not the best by far i would prefer a pentium extreme edition with hyper threading but as i said id imagine its better then some and should still reasonably perform. the motherboard is a nforce4 amd/intel x16 SLI edition motherboard.. its a very strange form factor and strange computer all around.. i had to fabricate to get my powersupply to even work. but as i said its been a long road with this computer..

anyways about the hard drive i was having the same issues when it was previously installed on the old hard drive (at the time the older graphics card aswell) i did notice in resources even after uninstalling Pando media booster for some reason the bin file for ddo high res install was still being read by my hard drive and taking alot of resources (said it was by scvhost so possibly still sending?) . i deleted the install files and it went away, i will definetly test it out tomorrow and see if its already fixed due to that but im still thinking its something else.

the testing continues will keep guessing/testing/posting/hoping, thanks.

So after some more thorough testing the spikes arent gone and via the resource monitor during the spikes i am generally not higher then 65-80% cpu load and it seems smooth on the graphing, the hard drive never reached above 1 mb/s and seemed to be functioning properly and the memory was even less of an increase.. kinda at a stand still.. gonna try fiddling more tomorrow see if i can find out which specific setting is possibly causing the issue, maybe its just my graphics card cant handle the load is there a graphics card load monitor that i could download to graph my graphics card load levels? I only have one monitor so it needs to be something i can alt+tab and view previous moments. It would be nice to check it and see if its just still not capable of thinking that hard.. I dunno it sounds stupid as it shouldnt be lagging.. seems to be mostly while running and seems to happen when taking on large amounts of textures.. but at the same time in noticed in slayer that every single time the slayer count went up i spiked very slightly.. even if i wasnt anywhere near the person killing, also noticed it does happen in private instances and doesnt seem to be releted to other peoples connections

sorry i tend to write horribly confusing... hope you can assess what im trying to get across and what has happened lol.. thanks for any info you may have or help towards the issue.

now i start my computer today and i couldnt figure out why my hard drive was reading so much after like 5 minutes of not doing anything. So i checked resource monitor and it says the sound and animation dat files for DDO were being read taking over 50mb resources for like 2-3 minutes and again this was running on scvhost.exe, why would my internet need to read this file when i havent even got anywhere near ddo since ive started my computer.
after almost 10 minutes now the resources only have one file running at all in hard disk, why would it load all that initially and not afterwards? and why would the internet auto connect i do not have the loader start when windows starts nor does it run when the games not running so there should be no reason the sound file needs to be read (that was taking the most resources)... its not doing it now but what was it?

From a clean boot DDO files should not be accessed if "load launcher when computer starts up" is de-selected.

Please be precise about what you posted (as you stated it twice) - was it svchost.exe (windows system) or scvhost.exe.. which is malware ?

and now it randomly popped it back up when i closed firefox... taking more resources again.. why would this happen? PMB is REMOVED for that reason exactly.. why would my internet be reading my ddo dat files directly from the ddounlimited folder?

I'm not precisely sure what you're describing, but lets classify it as "weird, unexpected. screwy behavior with things I didn't load or didn't intend to load."

So forgive me if this has been asked:

Do you have any anti-virus/security software that could be scanning the disk?

Have you run a good malware checker?

Do you have any other software loaded onto your computer such as, VOIP (skype, etc.), File Sharing, Cloud Backups, etc?

Have you scanned your drive for errors?

i am running the full trial version of avast which could be scanning i suppose but isnt scvhost.exe internet related? it was taking major read resources on resource manager while i had not even touched anything other then firefox after i started my computer. then it went away and after a few minutes came back, i havent been on my computer to keep watching but it isnt running at the moment and the computer has been on since the issue.

So basically it says image is scvhost for a couple of files being read and they are ddo dat files in the ddounlimited folder in my program files.

my DDO related problem initially is strange almost constant lag spikes no matter what the settings are set at.. i try lowering every setting and still has trouble loading.. im starting to think its my DSL internet but i was running at 40mb, dropped to 20 recently but some people are excited about getting 10 cause thats what there area maxes out at and it runs perfect on ddo. im going to try some router driver updates if thats possible as someone stated earlier and see if that changes anything but its been on different windows platforms so i also am thinking thats not an issue. i dont know.. ill keep trying things but this is starting to become a lost cause.

So to describe the lag spikes there mostly when running and seems to be when loading alot of things at once.. but my computers resource monitor reads no peaks of anywhere close to 100 percent and the graphics card is at most times sitting between 40-50 fps (in high spell areas i do drop to like 20-25 sometimes but asside from the lag spikes should still sufficiantly run that fps and not spike). so it basically studders and sometimes will do a half a second pause causing me to not hit monsters properly sometimes aswell... but i have noticed mini spikes when slayer count is raised even with someone across the map raising it.. even in a private instance aswell by me raising it with 50-60fps.. i dont know if those are related lag spikes but still..

anyways malware checker doesnt seem probable as its happened on multiple windows installs and am currently running a fresh install since i recently got vista. i will try to see if maybe pando left some **** behind somehow or something but i again doubt it. I cant seem to find a reasonable explanation and have replaced almost everything atleast once other then the mobo and processor.. i may just do that soon aswell.. plan to anyways.

sorry i tend to ramble but you see what my problem is? ill try to disable anti-virus see if that helps aswell.. some simple things i may have overlooked but i have had multiple antivirus programs overtime aswell.. who knows... thanks for readin my stress LOL let me know what u think? thanks

All on this same system? Could be remants screwing you over. You may need to reinstall your system utterly, honestly.

Also, that odd behavior of it accessing the dat files could very well be your cause of lag. You would need to figure out what is accessing it to learn more of what is going on.

At the current state of things, there isn't a whole lot more we can tell you.

yes they were all on the same system but i had reinstalled windows before each type of antivirus program was used.. i keep reinstalling windows, reinstalling anti-virus, changing parts... ddo is just not properly functioning for me.. im gonna just have to suck it up and deal with it..

From what your describing msdesign that sounds like internet connection problems.. while this could be my issue aswell since i have had the same provider since i started i may just have a connection that doesnt hold constant for some reason.. but it sounds like your losing connection for small amounts of time. I could be wrong but maybe your internet is being screwy.. or the server your connecting to is having connection issues with people in your area? i dunno.

Its just sad that my card performs at the exact same fps on ultra high as it does on low and still experience the same spikes.. i understand the fps drop during congestion on high settings but when its just always stuttering its getting annoying..

I hope to switch to comcast soon i dont like century link.. never have.. never will.. so maybe the move from DSL and my crappy old phone line in this old ass house will make things work better.. i just dont get it anymore i cant really find anything else to try... ill let you know if anything i find works

My internet connection is very stable. Ocasionally I have lag, but during that lag I can see my toon running animation without getting out of the same spot, and the other toons too, running in the same place without moving around. That is internet lag, and I understand it. I'm not complaining about that lag.

What I was talking about was complete screen freezes. Everything just stops: the sky animation, other toons, my own toon, visuals, just an authentic screen capture.

For this description, I would say, and all of you too, that the problem is on my computer. Agreed. But the thing here is, these symptoms only started after they updated DDO with MotU expansion.

One day I was running DDO just fine and smooth, I went to bed, the day after, waited for the servers to come back up after the update, logged in, and started to notice these problems one after another.

Negative. Frame rate is all on client side and very little to do with network packets.
