Default my turn I guess...I need Help..

Edit: computer formatted and issue resolved. Still don't really know what the issue is. Very diisapointed in Turbine for not responding in email or on phone. Still love this game. Thanks to everyone that did try to help.

Well, I'm not a computer savy guy. About all I really do is check my emails and play ddo on my computer. Now I can't play DDO. Not sure why.

After the Patch yesterday I went on and played just fine. Logged off for a bit to play with the kids in the pool. Logged back on and updated some Microsoft Updates, just to make sure I was ready for that "big" virus on Monday. I also got rid of Norton antivirus and started using Microsft Essentials and Windows Defneder. When I hit the ddo icon, it goes through the normal process, goes to the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1, Redistributable Packag like normal, then just locks up. I can't click any of the links on it. All I can do is "cntrol/alt/delete" it. Then when I try to bring it back up. The ddo icon will not respond and I have to reboot the computer..to start all over again, with the same crappy results.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Right click, run as administrator should get you running again.

    Default ughh

Just tried that, and it got stuck at the same spot. Spent 4 hours the night before removing and re-downloading ddo and four hours last night following the generic email turbine sent me last night to resolve my issues. Everything else works fine on my computer. Most dissapointing was the phone call to the Turbine Customer Service Rep who said "sorry" I wouldn't begin to know how to help you, submit a ticket and try the on line help. Still waiting on Turbine to respond....

I hate to say this.... but I wouldn't be surprised if you have some remant of Norton arguing with your Windows Defender.

I ditched Norton years ago for being bloatware and too invasive for my liking. Unless there are some good tools (and I don't know if their are) I'd almost say be ready to format/re install everything.

but before that... add the DDO executables to the accepted list for windows firewall and those windows programs. They could be blocking it.

I would strongly suggest that you google "Norton Removal Tool", and download from https://www-secure.symantec.com.

    Default thanks

    Thanks all.

I went through a ton of stuff to ensure all traces of norton are gone. Only the removal tool is left. It was a pain to get rid of. Also I have turned windows defender completly off after adding almost everything to the accepted list (as per the Turbine fix it list). Still nothing. .... I think I'm going to end up formatting. Either that or finding a new past time....

If it is a remant argument happening, and you choose to find a new past time, you'd better choose one that doesn't require that computer. No telling what will and will appear to work correctly.

    Best of luck to you.

Thank you Missing Minds. Not giving up yet. Its just frustrating....and Turbine is so slow to respond..you should see the list of things I've done from their e mail and web sight. Had a couple computer gurus from my guild try to help out on "mumble" as well.

You could just go back and remove the updates that were installed by the update. Since it doesn't work after they were installed it leads me to believe that one of those updates is not agreeing with your system or some piece of software on your system. Formatting is a last resort and only if necessary. I know this is too late now. I would suggest a program like ccleaner. It will clean up the registry of any remaining entries of Norton and delete them safely.

Ok. All formatted and back up and in game. Thanks to the players of ddo for trying to help. Very dissapointed in Turbine. Almost a full day and no response except for the generic author reply and the guy at customer service who says we'll call you when we call you.... I still love the game....but C'mon guys!

Thanks thatguy. Its probably something to do with. One of the auto response instructions that had me delete all. Framework stuff and re down load it. Did that. This was propably as a side affect. Anyways... computer is formatted and back on line. Ty for helping thatguy!

This. And the later comment about dotNET 4.0.

Hey Thatguy, I haven't done work on dotNET since 1.1 - are the APIs for each that different that you can tell from a snippet of code? How much of that change was with the recent 4.0?

You were playing, which means you had that service pack for VC 2005 already installed. Maybe check the Windows Update website to see what comes up - sometimes drivers get to be a pain. Note that Windows Update will want to push the dotNET 4.0 framework on you again.

McCaffee is NOTORIOUS for this sort of crud, where you just can't uninstall the whole thing! It got so bad that I downloaded (and keep, for customers) a special download that uninstalls after the uninstaller. Even before teh more "aggressive" uninstaller, you sometimes had to *reinstall* a few things like DirectX or a dotNET framework - I hope they've fixed that in more recent versions.

Which Norton product was this? If others have similar problems when removing Norton, then we'll want to look into it.

EDIT: Just saw Nostravar's post about the Norton Removal Tool. That is exactly what I was talking about seeing with McAfee - especially Enterprise edition stuff on college kid's computers..
