Default Sections of Backgrounds Completely Dark

Both in the U14 beta and now on live, I have frequently run into situations that look like this (character selection intentionally distorted):

Anything I target with the focus orb is similarly black, as are areas like Guck's cave in Searing Heights.

Given I haven't seen anything about this anywhere on the forums, I figure the problem has to do with my system.

Brief summary of the most relevant system info:
    Ubuntu 11.10, Wine 1.4
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 (I assume the issue is here; I'm told Wine and ATI don't play well together).

I have tried installing, uninstalling, and reinstalling my drivers. Mostly that's just broken things (spent a few days trying to get my computer's graphics to work again).

Still, I'm not a fan of running through areas completely blind. Any suggestions would be welcome, and I'm happy to provide more info if it would be useful.

Ok, I've been able to narrow down the issue to two settings, but I'm still not sure what's going on.

It seems that in game, if either Material Detail is set to High, or Multipass Lighting are Enabled, the above effects appear. There is still some odd behavior on the character selection screen, however.

    1. I set my graphics to "Medium" while on the character selection screen. Immediately the whole screen becomes visible.
    2. I now revert my graphics to "High." The screen remains visible.
    3. I disable Multipass Lighting while under "High" settings. Suddenly the screen looks like the screen shot in my previous post. Either re enabling Multipass Lighting or setting Material Detail to Low causes the screen to become visible again.

Hope the above helps anyone else with this issue.
