Rereading the OP, how did I forget 'Blow Up The Pokies'?

"Pokies" is a term for gambling slot machines in Australia, the song is about a gambling addiction tearing a family apart, from the point of view of a friend that's watching it happen and can't figure out how to intervene to help. The addict used to be a musician whose liveliehood was ruined when pokies replaced live entertainment at pubs in Australia over the 90s (at least in Victoria, other decades in other states).

Another one should've been one of my first choices:

Really? I find that song uplifting... When he hits the part where his voice starts rising, I want to go do something great in the world.

LOVE Freddy, I wish he was still around.
The problem is never how to get new, innovative thoughts into your mind, but how to get old ones out. Every mind is a building filled with archaic furniture. Clean out a corner of your mind and creativity will instantly fill it.

Lou Reed: Magic and Loss. The entire album, every single song, will pull you down.

Not when one's Forever falls to yesterday.

Have to agree on 'Seasons in the Sun' and 'Who Wants to Live Forever'.

One of the more depressing songs I remember from years back is 'Tell Laura I Love Her', by (according to wikis) either Ray Peterson or Ricky Valance. And I have always found Acker Bilk's 'Stranger on the Shore' to be a very emotional piece.

And anything by Coldplay is liable to make you want to slash your wrists...

What is sad/depressing is, as someone else said, kind of dependent on the listener and their current mood. There are some songs that I love which, listened to at the wrong time, will make me cry very easily.

    Here some good ones
Warning: if you hate dissonance you should probably stay away.

All of Scott Walker's The Drift is pretty depressing.

Penderecki can get depressing in a desolate sort of way:

Comus, although I guess they are more insane than depressing... depressing if you are a sane person:

    Sunn:

Honorable mentions to the genre depressive black metal, and many of black metal's marriages with harsh noise, and some of the darker corners of electronic music/industrial... which I don't really know enough about to make good recommendations.

    Edit: Some more:
