Default Would you fix how the UI BREAKS combat already?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It used to be, PAST TENSE, noted in the known issues. And I complained to Cordovan when it got removed off the known issues list months ago because it has NOT been resolved. If anything it has gotten worse.

I've been complaining about this, and bug reporting it since October 28th, 2006. Three days after Mod 3 went live.

The UI breaks combat, not mouselook combat, that seems to be mostly fixed, but if your mouse is over any of the UI, you can not keyboard attack unless you were already attacking when the mouse went over the UI. Hot keyed buttons still work, but any standard melee/ranged attack that is done with your attack key is IGNORED.

This also includes invisible (aka where a loot table or your map may have been) as well as transparent objects (chat windows).

I have freaking lost track of how many times I get screwed by this a week.

It is now 2012, Turbine. OVER SIX FREAKING YEARS you've let this bug exist. Now, I suspect it is an engine issue. (same reason we can't get large mouse cursors yet.) YOU'VE BEEN WORKING ON THE ENGINE!!!!!!!

    FIX COMBAT!

Incidentally, the transparent and invisible stuff in the UI also screws up soft targeting. It wont' target those things behind them even though players can plainly see them.

On a somewhat related note, know how you can use CTL+mousescroll to switch between hotbars? Well, this only works if your cursor is NOT over an undocked hotbar. The number of times that this has scred me royally...

This doesn't affect me as I primarily play with Mouselook on.

    However, /signed just the same.

Minds, did you have a chance to test on Lamannia? Is the new UI there broken in the same fashion?

So, making the existing Attack key mapping work when mousing over the UI is a complicated task.

What I can do really simply is add an additional keymapping called "Attack (UI Mouseover Compatible)".

You'd then be able to map this new mapping to whatever you'd like (it'd be set to nothing by default), and it will execute attacks regardless of where the mouse cursor is.

Would this work for your setup?

So.. leave the standard attack button (that is currently used along side the mouse buttons) as is...

And create a new attack mapping, much like the "charge rune arm" that got added in, that would always do a standard attack no matter what? Just not enabled by default?

If that is what it is, SIGN ME UP, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!

This issue has been my biggest source of frustration in the game for years.

    Exactly.

I'll try and get it in for the first post-XPack patch.

Yeah, Xpack is in lock down right now isn't it. If you have to wait till U15, I'll be patient. I understand how software reviewing and cycles go.

    Thank you, Phax.

    That sounds good!

On an unrelated note, is there any chance of getting the "Fire Rune Arm" an icon that can be placed on a hotbar and used from there? I use a gamepad and the only way I've found to use a rune arm is to map a keyboard key that I don't otherwise use to a gamepad button via Xpadder. This would be okay, except that by doing so I actually lose an extra gamepad button, since I haven't found a way to program this through Xpadder to not interact poorly with my Shift+Button set-up.

That would certainly be possible. Filing a bug with that request might expedite the process and get it officially into the system. This is one of those things that might be useful even to non-gamepad users.

    I'm sure it would be.

I never bothered with a bug report since I assumed it would get tossed when it became obvious that it isn't regarding a bug, but a lacking piece of the UI. I'll submit one.

    Thanks.

This used to happen to me when I joined DDO. Then I discovered mouselook, and stayed that way since then. No more issues, nada. And actually, I prefer mouselook because that way, its a lot easier to aim your toon and not fall down, whereas keyboard arrow keys make turning a bit chunky and unprecise.

Ooh, so much promise in this thread. Thumbs up.

The ui-elements blocking the attack button is one of the most annoying things with a melee-toon, and a separately configured always-working attack button would be perfect. (I would probably suggest making that the default one, but that's just the icing on the cake).

Even more perfect would be a toggleable attack button, so the toon would keep swinging even without having to keep a button pressed risking carpal tunnel syndrome. (I do use auto-attack against portals, but against anything that moves, it's pretty much useless).

And runearm shooting to hotbar, yes please! Separate key for runearm shooting by far the single most annoying thing about artificers, and this is from a regular keyboard user.

    Arrow Another UI suggestion

While we are on the subject of mousing over the UI, How about giving us the option to enlargen or change the color OF the Mouse cursor?!? Daily is how often I lose my Mouse Cursor during intense combat! I have to do a furious circle manuver to locate it and often I'm circling for several seconds going "come on come on come ON, but its color and small size matches background So well its lost.
Every day I play I have this issue.

For refrence, I have perfect vision (meaning I dont require glasses or assistance to see small objects nor any dificulity with colors)
In case that has nothing to do with it, I use 1920x1080 Res on 24" Widescreen.
And though I do use several keyboard and extra buttons on mouse activiation of several key abilities/spells, nearly every clicky and about 60% of spells I cast are via direct mouse cursor to bar clicking.
Ideally would be the option to change both the size AND the color to reach the largest number of players without effecting the ones that are not bothered by current UI mouse cursor.
Could even tie it to the dice color in the dropdown. Or maybe that would that cause more losing of the cursor?

Though I've often thought dice needed a small facelift for colors too. I like my dice, I like saying "grrrr freaking 1! lol. Wouldnt mind having option to shrink them a little and include another set shown next to or under for those double rolls. But dice is a far down on list compared to that mouse cursor for me. FAR down, dont want anyone spending crazy time thinking about dice color/shape/size/number of dice when more important things need attention!

They can't change the size of the cursor. That is an engine issue of which the DDO devs apparently aren't allowed to touch.

I recall them saying they would see what they could do about trying to get a color change being a possibility.

I would drop a case of Sam off at Turbine HQ for Phax if this change was implemented.

And it seems if you don't embiggen you run the risk of embitter.
