This would be a cool idea. having a split class prestige. However, the main power of classes in this game comes from the number of levels you put into it. So still being a split class will fail simply for that reason.

I'd expect the devs to cover that issue.
Remember most Fighte/Mage combinations will be concentrating on Buffs {Level and DC not an issue here}.
It would be nice if you could get a DC/Potency boost however for some damage to go with the type of Multiclass you are.
For Example:
A Dwarven Fighter/Cleric should be a pretty good healer and be able to put the hurt on his/her enemies.
The Prestige Capstone - i.e. 10/10 could provide Heal and Blade Barrier as Over-Level Spells {New Lvl Slot would have to be added into Spell Book}.
An Elven Spellsword should have the ability to fight and cast at the same time - Maybe they could provide a capstone ability that doubles the base damage of all Force and Fire Spells {Stacks with everything}.
I highly doubt this would be Overpowered compared to the damage a Pure 20 Sorc or Evo specced Archmage can put out.
A Duskblade {if I'm getting this right} is more of an instakill type - Capstone for this could provide FoD and CoD as Over-Level Spells {See Dwarven Fighter/Cleric above}.
+ FREE Heighten {to Lvl 9} for Necromancy/Illusion. {Those spells would be a waste without the DC to back them up.}.
For none of these classes would you get lvl 6-9 spells BUT you'd still count as a Lvl 20 Caster rather than Lvl 10 for DCs (Not Dmg)}.
The Fighter/Rogue - Swashbuckler - idea - Well this is what a large number of people have been asking for for a long time now.
Single {All one handed} Weapon, Light Weapon {Rapier/Short Sword/Light Mace/Light Hammer} and Buckler or Light Weapon {Rapier/Short Sword} and Dagger specs should be given boosts here.
This sounds like a good option. However, as I recently looked into D&D games to see about this sort of build. Neverwinter Nights had a feat that allowed multi-class casters to buff up their DC and damage using a feat. Such as if you were a Wizard 4/Fighter 6 you can only cast the spells that a level 4 wizard does, but it increases your caster level when you take the feat so your spells do caster level 10 DC and damage. I also believe it had a cap at like caster level +8 or something to limit your multi-class ability somewhat.
However, seeing as they already have divine caster/melee non-multi classes (at least 2 already, and 1 coming soon) I would expect that from the perspective of a paladin already existing, that maybe they might make an arcane styled version of him? It just seems like an easy to convert platform. It's as simple as changing his spells and a few of his feats and enhancements. And stat usage of course. Maybe CHA requirement for spells, on the basis that he'd have some innate power for spellcasting so he doesn't have to study as much. Or even just to stop people from taking advantage of an INT based version (by this I mean taking advantage of certain AC feats that require INT as well as limiting skill points)
