Choppy gameplay, almost unplayable

Hey, so I've been playing this game since around 2008, always on the same computer. It used to run just fine on medium-low. I took a year long break and am just coming back now to find that it has horrible framerates and I can barely even tell what's going on. The lag is ridiculous, but it's not from the internet connection (which is assuredly fine), but more from the display. Like I'll see my character turn before the screen turns, and nothing is a fluid motion. This is on very low graphics settings, mind you.

Now I'm aware my graphics chip is horrible compared to any graphics card, but it has run this game fine before! I did used to have occasional problems, but that was before I updated my modem. Anyways, I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on how to fix it, what the problem might be, etc. Also if the only solution is a new graphics card, I'm probably not going to do it seeing as how this is the only game I ever play on my computer.

With the engine upgraded, and new graphics most likely coming, you might wanna consider a new computer or graphics card upgrade. I Have a nice laptop with nice RAM and Graphics Card, and have no lagg whatsoever, I play with Dx10 and Ultra High Graphics.

If I were to play DDO on my old laptop, I'd have to play on lowest graphics, and try and to survive the lagg.

Most of the time, the lagg people complain about isnt even connection related, but graphical lagg, where the computer cant process all the graphics and it has a small spasm everytime it has to render objects and animations, hence causing lagg.

Tips:

- Play with the power plugged in. Trust me, it helps.

- Lower your DDO shadow rendering settings. These are a heavy load on any computer.

- Frill distance and object draw distance are also a big load on any computer. Lower these as much as possible.

- Try and only have DDO running and have any other apps or programs closed.

Also, most laptops have performance settings.

-Power Saver: low performance, longer battery life

- Balanced: What the name says

- Performance: battery life is shorter, but improves performance drastically.

Found the problem:

Honestly though, I think its your graphics chip. DDO has had a few graphics updates over the last year. Add the fact that you are using a 2004/05 chip on a game built in 2006 with upgrades, and I'm not surprised you are having performance issues. Try turning the settings lower, and see if it helps.

I don't use a laptop haha. Although I do have a laptop from like 07-08 that might run this better anyways...But yeah I suppose if there have been many new updates, my graphics thing just might not do it anymore. I'll try closing all other programs since I usually don't do that, but I don't think that can fix how bad it is.

I have the settings on very low, everything all the way down, and it runs like a silent film from the 1900s with missing slides. On an aside, I could update to Windows 7, but I don't really feel like it ha I know vista too well already and I'm not sure what I would gain.

Performance. I suspect the Army upgraded from Windows 2000 to Vista in order to thwart cyber attacks by making all its computers unusable. Windows 7 works as efficiently as XP, in my experience, and its more user friendly than Vista any day of the week. As I have heard so many times, Win 7 is everything that Vista was supposed to be.

I have an onboard 6150 graphics chip and have frame rates in the teens. My movement is generally pretty smooth, though. I'm on Windows 7, which I have found to be a vast improvement over Vista.

Make sure post processing is off. It makes your water look great, but really is the only setting that causes me lag and distress. I turn off all shadows, use trilinear on High for the textures. I do use the Ultra high draw distance, because I use a bow and like to see them before they see me.

Fiddle with the custom settings till you find one that helps. Good luck.

I'm running fairly well on an onboard Intel Chipset from 2006, and although I have most of the advanced graphics features on low or off, the game is quite playable.

If your machine USED to play it better may I suggest some other possibilities?

Have you reinstalled the game recently (to effectively defragment it internally)?
Have you defragmented your hard drive?
Do you have any other software running in the background, especially VOIP, file sharing, etc?

Just some thoughts to consider.

I can tell you from personal experience that although there have been some engine upgrades over the past two years I personally have not seen much increased "choppiness" or display lag at my playable-but-low settings.

After that, I can only suggest a new (or used) PC.

Glad to hear someone with a chip gets it to work smoothly. And sounds good, I'll try personally fiddling with the custom settings. But I did turn the general graphics thing onto very low and still experienced problems that I previously didn't.

Glad to hear 2 people with a chip get it to work smoothly haha. To answer your questions:
1. Yes I just reinstalled it about 2-3 days ago.
2. It automatically defragments once a week, and I do it manually on occasion.
3. Facebook and the character planner are usually the only things open. Sometimes iTunes, but I've never noticed a difference in quality when iTunes is playing, not playing, or not open.

Not sure if that helps anything, but hey, maybe seeing as how you're not having problems with a similar setup.

Are they not upgraded? Also I believe it is running dx9 on the options. At any rate, I've noticed I'm not able to change if it's running dx9, dx10, or whatever. But I think it's 9.
