    Default Solo Barbarian/Rogue/Fighter

I'm making a half-orc barbarian with some rogue and fighter levels.
I want to be able to solo. I know a human would be better, but I really want a half-orc.
I also don't like UMD. It feels like cheating.
I managed to make these two builds. They both have very low dexterity, so I splashed in a level of fighter to gain heavy armor proficiency and raise my AC.

The first one is 18/1/1 Barbarian/Rogue/Fighter. It has Search, Spot and Open Lock maxed out. Instead of disabling traps I would have to survive them. Is it possible when I have Trap sense and Improved Trap Sense IV? Will it be enough for most traps?

The second one is 18/3/1 Barbarian/Rogue/Fighter. It has Search, Spot, Open Lock and Disable Trap all maxed out, so I don't need Improved Trap Sense.

Evasion isn't important due to my low dexterity.
Which of these builds would be better? Do you have any other tips or suggestions? Thanks!

Tip 1: Your first build didn't invest in Disable Device.

Tip 2: The ability to handle traps doesn't really contribute a whole lot to your solo-ability, just your bonus XP.

Tip 3: The difficulty in soloing has everything to do with your ability to...
    a. Handle large groups of mobs
    b. Handle heavy-hitting mobs/bosses
    c. Handle self-healing rednamed mobs
    d. The ability to replenish your health faster than you are losing it.

I don't really see that in either build. Nimble Fingers, Skill Focus: Spot, and Diehard aren't going to do a whole lot for you.

^^ Uhh, what they said. Nothing you've done makes for better "solo ability".

And that other stuff aside, while you can solo on a barb (SF pots, DPS and go!), it is in my opinion a lot like pulling teeth.

Heavy armor isn't enough protection in the end and not worth taking a fighter splash to get it. Basically with AC you either have so much of it that you cannot be hit in most content your you have too little of it to matter.

With a low DEX no monk splash character you will never have enough AC to mitigate the majority of damage. So, it really isn't worth the trivial increase in AC that gaining heavy armor proficiency would get you.

Instead, your best protection is HP. As a barbarian you want so many HP that when it is all over you are the last one standing. Then you need to run off somewhere and heal before your rages wear off and you go ding.

This means getting into a guild or forming one yourself and gaining use of the guild potion vendor in house K. Or, you could just frequent the potion vendor in house J. In either case, you need lots and lots of cure potions -- always the highest that you can get for your level.

Splashing rogue is only worth doing if you gain evasion from it. Evasion is only worth having if you have the DEX to make the saving throw. Remember than normal evasion is half damage on a save but full damage on a fail. If you are going to fail the save then there's no reason to have evasion and so no reason to splash rogue.

A better splash is something that gets you wand use. That could be rogue if you invest into UMD. But, you said you don't want to do that. Check out the different character classes to see if you can find one (or a combination) that lets you use cure critical wands as well as wands of shield, stoneskin and blur.

You can find clickies for most of those but they are short duration. Because wand use is based on character level and not on class level it is useful if you can stockpile L10 or so wands of each of those. The spell duration is longer and provides more protection.

Shield serves not only to boost AC but also protects against magic missiles (and other force spells). That is a more important function than the AC boost.

An obvious way to splash in order to gain both divine and arcane wand use is 1 cleric and 1 wizard. But, splashing bard gets most of the things you would want.

When you've finished a fight and are the last one standing it is useful to drink potions because you can't cast spells (including using wands) while rage is still active. But, if you have enough HP to dismiss rage then using wands to heal yourself up is cheaper than drinking potions. Again, if you were to go with UMD then you could eventually have enough UMD to cast heal scrolls. But, if you don't go with UMD then a mix of potions and wands is your best choice.

I'm guessing your idea of solo is to use hirelings, since you don't want umd.

If this is true, I recommend ranks in intimidate, because this will help you pull agro off of the pocket for those times they try to kamikaze. Though it wont do much for the times they stand in a trap trying to heal themselves, failing concentration checks, asking you for a heal, and then dying...

    Default Reply to everyone..

    Thanks for the advice.

I will drop the fighter level and add some more useful feats instead of Nimble Fingers and Spot. But is really Diehard that bad?

But I don't want wands any more than I like UMD. Potions are a a sure thing plus I will buy hirelings when most needed.

I should have said at the beginning that I am not a typical player. I something like a "solo roleplayer". I don't want to rush through dungeons, I'm not seeking the highest possible DPS. I want to have the skills to find and open all locks on my own. Hopefully to disable traps. And enjoy the storyline. Not just hack'n'slash.

I have no problem playing on normal or easy settings (or even lower level dungeons). I just won't do magic. Barbarians don't do magic.

You said that I need a lot of hitpoints. But I thought I had a lot of them. How can I get more than this?

Phidius: I know I didn't take DD in the first build, that was the point.

But you didn't answer my question:
Is Trap Sense and Improved Trap Sense IV enough to save me from most trap damage?

Presuming that you invested in Spot and Search so that you would know where the traps are (and what type), then yes. Technically, you don't need Trap Sense and Improved Trap Sense IV at all... the +9 to your saves versus traps isn't needed as you can simply time the traps, and move through them without making a reflex save at all.

However, having evasion would certainly give you a bigger cushion in case you mistime the trap, or have to go through it a little faster than you might prefer. Even with a base Dex of 8, I'll bet you could at least temporarily boost your reflex save to make the trip a little safer.

    This page: http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Feat:Evasion says:
"Evasion can only be used if the character is wearing Light or No Armor and is Not Heavily Encumbered."
    Is it worth it?
What would be the easiest way to gain more reflex with 10 dexterity?

Quizzie: I'm inferring from your intitial builds and what you've said that what you're after is a THF HO barb who can also handle traps (hence the rogue splash). [Note that "has trap skills" is not what most people consider a "soloing" build.] To that end, I would suggest a build with more rogue lvls to pump up your skills while lowering your INT so you can pump up other stats.

    Something like this:
    Code:

    DDO Character Planner Home Page

Level 20 True Neutral Half-Orc Female

I know you said you didn't want UMD; I think you'd be nuts to give it up. But if you really really don't want it, you can put those extra skill pts elsewhere, like Open Lock, Spot, and/or Balance. I also deliberately omitted a first-tier rogue PrE; IMHO none of them is worth the AP cost for this build.

What would be the easiest way to gain more reflex with 10 dexterity?

    38 versus traps and spells

Trap Sense & Improved Trap SenseIV: 8

46 versus traps... won't work on 'em all, but on most. Especially if you are only running Normal or Casual content.

Okay... here is my upgrade. Maybe I'm nuts, but still no UMD.
I dropped the fighter level and raised my reflex -> Evasion is now useful.
I grabbed better feats. I experimented with different levels of rogue.
I dropped Improved Trap Sense and kept Disable Device in all builds.

The first build has only 2 levels of rogue, high Intelligence, low Dexterity and Insightful Reflexes. Highest hitpoints, but lowest final Strength.

The second build has 5 levels of rogue, high Intelligence, low Dexterity and Insightful Reflexes.

The third build has 6 levels of rogue, high Dexterity, low Intelligence. I has the highest AC.

    Which one is the best?
