Talking BYOH blunder: the noob booby trap!

BYOH blunder: the noob booby trap.

    (heh; I said 'booby')

Have you ever heard song lyrics wrong on consecutive occasions merely because you heard them wrong the first time?
Perhaps read the wrong spelling of a word after taking for granted that you read it right to begin with?

When I first checked out the LFM panel as a beginning player, I misread the BYOH! as BYCH! on a 'know me' group:

I figured it was a tactic for (a)- bypassing the profanity filter, (b) dissuading strangers from joining, and (c) letting friends know who the leader really is in case it was an unfamiliar toon.

I wondered what kind of gangster rapper wannabe could play so much DDO since he/she so frequently ran high level Zerg fest groups, but having worked years on construction sites with blokes whose standard greeting for mates was a list of expletives; I reckoned it was probably someone like that.

Took a while for the /facepalm realization to sink in.
-Too long to not feel the shame burn deep

Just thought I'd share :-) can anyone else match my ineptitude?

When I first started playing years ago, people would always tell me to FO whenever we finished a quest. Well I always thought it a bit rude for people that didn't know me to tell me to f off.

Sadly that one took a while before I realized...

    FO = Finish Out

It took me a while to figure out what bio meant. I assumed most players where avid roleplayers who needed time to update their ingame bio. Yeah right.

When I was new to D&D, I never understood was "turning undead" meant. I took this literally.

Turn them ? To which side ? And : Up or down ?
And how, actually ? Grabbing their heads and facing them into another direction to walk (in)to ?

"You are a Tiefling. And a Cleric, with the Domain of the Sun. Doesn't that contradict each other ?" "No, all my friends are playing evil. I found that so boring that I decided to be on the good side. And, besides, Sun and Fire, where is the difference, really ?"

Out of game: I heard that fish and chips was a popular meal across the seas from me.

I also heard that they called their french fries chips.

I stood up in a college class one day and said "OMG they mean fish and FRENCH FRIES."

I can't really think of any moments like that in DDO for me yet...or anytime else in my life luckily.

just a technicality but French fries and chips (in England) are also different

Chips are fatter cut, French fries are "skinny chips"........ and chips (as per U.S) are crisps

The FO at the end of quests caught me out when I transfered from devourer. We used to say RC (recall) I thought FO was a bit strong

EDIT: And in a fish and chip shop you will (usually) get chips not French fries... but Mc D's or something its fries all the way........ Oh! and chips, while fatter then fries are not as fat as wedges.... although you do get chunky chips........ I never realised our chip scale was so complex lol

EDIT EDIT: Also.... fish and chips is considered quite a "british" meal but the Italians battered their fish before we did and chips came from Belgium......

I still don't know what bio stands for after playing ddo for nearly 2 years...I always just say "afk 1 min brb" or "quick brk brb"

off the top of my head, its the PhiArlan enclave, not the Pharlian....

and they're Siberys shards not Siberius.... (That great roman emperor Siberius?)

(Here in the "states" I think most people would say a "crisp" is a type of toasted cracker, although we have "apple crisps" which I always knew as Apple Cobbler, which I sorely miss, darn that sugar!)

I frequently get asked on IM at work (a technology shop, mind you - who should know) what I meant when I typed "afk". Oughta replace those ppl on principle.

It also depends on if the turner is a cleric or wizard. Wizzies "turn undead" in a rather different way.

Bio is referring to having to take care of BIOlogical needs. Generally, a trip to the bathroom.

Some of the LFM jargon can be downright confusing. Here's some tips (or sarcastic BS):

    - "BYOH" means "I'm tired of soloing as I'm sure you are too. I cant very well justify playing singleplayer in a multiplayer game since I have to put up with lag either way. So bring your solo toon into this quest with me and some other people and we'll all solo together."
    - "Know it" while it seems pretty obvious means "I'm going to flip out if you ask any questions. I do this to cover up the fact that this is my second time through the quest... Also I will be piking a lot since I have to repeatedly alt-tab to look at the wikis\solvers."
    - "IP" means either A) "We're running a quest that we don't expect anyone else in the world would want to run so we've already went in and are currently working on completion." OR B)"We've already finished. I forgot to take the LFM down and\or don't know how. I probably wont send you a /tell letting you know either way." AND C) "We've completely wiped\had several rage quits\DCs before we were even half way through but we're stubborn and we don't want to start over."
    - "ZERG" means "We wont be doing optionals, we wont be healing, we wont be buffing, we wont be disabling traps, we wont be sticking together, we wont be waiting for you to take a bio break and in some cases we wont be completing. We're bored with the content but for some reason we force ourselves to keep playing this game."
    - "Flower Sniffing" means "We WILL be doing optionals, healing, buffing (whether we need it or not), Ransack, Conquest and I might even read you the NPC flavor text complete with funny voices."
    - "Myddoing" means "I dont trust PuGs. My guild doesn't like me enough to group with me. Most likely you wont be selected to be in my group because I take what others write on the forums as gospel (the 'best' hp, ac, gear, etc...). Even if you get my 'seal of approval' I will probably blame you for wipes or delays. I truly believe that just a bit more information then I get when I select a hireling is valid. In most cases you're better off not even 'applying'."
    - "BB" means either A)"I'm a second (+) life TR and I want to cap this toon while I'm still young" OR B)"I haven't been playing long but I want to cap my toon before I learn how it actually works. Also, this quest is going to take two hours in a perpetual wipe state until someone finally manages to clear the mobs around the shrine for the hundredth time or we release out and come back enough times to negate any XP bonuses we might get."
    - "P2P" means "Free 2 players cant enter this quest. If you're a 'premium' player who has bought some packs you might be able to join but I honestly cant remember which pack this quest is from so please don't ask."
    - "Guild recruiting" typically means "I'm all alone in my guild with two other players that haven't logged in for a month but they are getting me some bonus renown for just existing so I haven't booted them. Please... I'm so lonely." but can also mean "We are totally going to cash in on this guild event so come join our renown factory. Be bonus eligible!" However, it almost never means "Several members and myself (the leader) will run a quest or two with you to gauge what kind of a player\person you are so we can determine if you'd be a good fit in our guild."
    - "Favor" means either "My main is on another server. Once I hit 100 favor on this toon you'll never see me again." OR "Have you ever tried running Proof is in the Poison or stealthy repossession (with a non stealth character) at level? Yeah... Me neither".
    - "PvP" means "We will have around fifteen minutes of killing each-other followed by 2 solid hours of trash talking in Harbor general chat."
    - "Casters only" means "I have no intention on playing then game as it was designed. I prefer auto-completions to being challenged a little. If you knew me in real life you would probably want to punch me in the face. Oh... and this game is too easy."

Yes most of this is said jokingly (truth in jest, etc.) but if you are offended by any of these then I wasn't joking and you were the one(s) I was referring to.
