Default Old foogey PnP RPer LFG

I'm about as old as they come, having started with the three little DnD booklets in 1976. I'm a serious Pen and Paper type roleplayer. I enjoy creating deep and interesting characters and seeing where they go. I've been at both sides of the table for about 30 years including being a regular convention GM in Califronia for a while.

What I am NOT into is...

    "Plotting" or "events".
    Teen power fantasies
Attempts at creating "drama". Drama is the natural product of interesting characters interracting, not something
you deliberately "create." (That's called "melodrama.")
Social manipulation, spot light hogging or passive agressive behavior.

I am honestly neutral about ERP. As long as its not the focus or point of the RP I am fine with it or equally fine with FTBs at the appropriate places as the other player wishes.

I am also pretty busy so I can't commit to a lot of play time, but am willing to try to make a weekly scheduled time.

If this sounds like a real fit for your group, then drop me a line. But please realize that I am serious about the above. I have too little play-time in my life to want to spend it doing things other then what I want to be doing.

    Eh??

Kybher is the infamous "drama" server. As far as I know, Sarlona and Thelanis are more famous for role play, though there's probably one or two in every server.

Maybe the person you spoke to thought drama=roleplay! It's easier if you can find a roleplay guild here on the forums, try the Recruitment section. There's been a few threads asking bout roleplay guilds there.

    Good luck!

Check out this thread to get a feel for the THACO Fellowship. Maybe it's what you're looking for:
    http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php...ight=D%26D+DDO

Intruder is our guild leader, and we play Wednesdays 730-1000pm. Most of us are AD&D veterans (and many played Basic/Expert sets, too!) We are not a bunch of kids, that's for sure. I'm having a blast with this group (I'm 42 and there's three or four older than me in the party.)

If you're interested, send me a message. We can meet up and run a few quests the THACO Fellowship way to see if we're a good fit. Hopefully we can get Intruder along during the trial run. You'll need a microphone, as we require voice chat (like table top games, we like to talk and laugh out of character- minimal role playing).

Thanks. I read the thread and your approach is interesting. But it doesnt I think quite meets my goals...

    (1) The issue I see with trying to make the rules pen and paper-like is that one evry important P&P factor is missing-- a true GM., Having been a long standing GM in many game systems, I am happy to tell you thet GMs cheat, often in the players favor when balance is bad against them, ocassionally in the monsters favor when the reverse is true. This is absaolutely nercessary because the self-balancing system does not exist. GMs also provide the flexability for players to coem up with inventive solutions to problems.

But DDO will *never* cheat in your favor. Nor will it allow for an ivnentive solution. This makes death a lot more likely and thus, I feel, makes perma-death questionable. As the quote from the ruel books in the thread you poinetd at says, players get attached to their hcracters. They shouldn't be deprived of them, therefor, juist because they have an off night or the rolls went against them.

    (2) I despise voice chat. In my roleplay circles we did not "joke around the table". When went in-game, we were our characters and anything we said was said in character. As I said, Im a deep roleplayer. Voice chat encourages out of character game chatter, which is antitheticle to deep immersion.

It also removes what iMHO is the only good thing about an MMORPG. In so many ways MMORPGs are inferior to pen and paper. The *one* thing they do provide is a cleaner immersion space. because other players dont se eeach other, but only their charcters, it makes thinkign of the other player *as* that character easier and more natural. But voice chat breaks down that fourth wall, bringing a direct communciation with the other player abck into the mix.

So, while I wish you well with your experiment, I'm afraid its not what I'm looking for.

It's all good. We definitely aren't deep roleplayers-- we enjoy laughing and joking out of character via voice-chat.

And to clarify for you and any who might be reading, THACO Fellowship is NOT permadeath. If a character is killed and can't be raised by a member of the party's spell abilities (no cakes or rez shrines), then you must release back to the tavern and are done questing for that session. The character can rejoin the party at the next session. I get the feeling this will start happening more often as we hit the harder quests...the experiment continues...

    Ok

I too am of similar age and experience to you.

Still play 2cnd Ed with various groups.

So what i can tell you is that the D & D experience you are looking for isnt the norm in DDO

They whilst sharing a common rulebook are very different animals

You will need to find a ''roleplaying'' static group that run in character

If you try the ''pug'' scene (this is random groups that get together to complete quests) it will not live up to your expectations.

However although DDO is different in many ways you might actually enjoy the difference once you have tried it

Just as an aside have you tried any LRP events they seem to be right up your street
