You pvp for one of two reasons:

    1) You want to fight people.
    2) You want to kill people.

There are certain unwritten rules if you want to do #1, regardless of what certain people (some of who I *know* have zero interest in pvp) said in this thread. Certain tactics and abilities are inherently cheap and/or simply not fun to take the time to counter.

Now, I am not saying wanting to do #2 is wrong...in fact, if that's your thing, chances are you want to **** other people off anyway - so enjoy raging out people there for #1. But understand there is a difference between fighting & killing.

And some people will cry no matter what you do. /shrug

sadly, this is actually very accurate.

I've started playing other games when I feel like killing people instead of slaying monsters. it just doesnt work in ddo.

The only rule about holds in pvp is don't hold them and not kill them just hold the idiot and kill him

Make powerbuild with the most burst DPS and high DCs, covering up every weakness possible with gear.

[insert meme pic here, dawson crying or fat acne guy will suffice]

Complain furiously in general chat that anything used to beat you is a cheap tactic that needs to be nerfed.

Ive also noticed the "lower level" people acting like it even matters that they are lower level. They are usually on a power class which is more powerful in PVP at level 15 than the player they handedly beat is on their 20. Failed will save is a failed will save.

But really just ignore them. If people want to set up special rules or teams, that's what the PVP challenge is for. Taverns are FFA, and they're just QQing that their saves are low, so they can't beat you in PVP where you use your class the way it's meant too. I suggest either A: Just hold him again when he jumps back down to "kill u & everyone in pit" and have him eat his tears. or B: Fight his way by properly letting him hit you to 50% hp, then hitting him back with your staff/club because that's how he thinks PVP "should" be done.

I do have a self-imposed PVP rule though: Don't touch anyone more 2 levels lower than me unless they hit me first. If they kill me, they're fair game afterwards. If I kill them, it's still only if they hit me first.
As a casual hanger on at the lobster, I admit that I follow that same 2 above, 2 below rule, with attack exceptions.

The problem however, that is being described however, is superficial. Hold, no one really likes over paralyzing, because they cannot fight back while in the spell, and it can last for much longer than most other spells. People have long been complaining about it because there are people that like to show up in the pits and, using only hold mass and a few other little things, can complete shut down the pit and hold 10+ people there for as much as 10 minutes, just constantly keeping them held and not allowing them to reach the ladders. Its why people also have extensive prejudices against bards in pvp.

DoTs, however, are a difference monster. Im sure everyone understands the term "sniping" in relation to pvp, but for those who don't, ill explain. Your standing on the ledge, and you want to kill this guy down below. You hop down, drop a dot, and climb back up real fast, leaving the guy high and dry with no way to kill you, all the while a dot just knocks him out and there is no real way for him to get even because the person will continue to do the same thing. That is the real source of the dot problem. On the side, people who run to the ladder and make it up under a dot still wind up dead on the ledge, even though its a technical safe spot. These are the problems really that i know of concerning dots.

Never experienced this, that would suck.

Yes, using DoTs in this way is't cool, I was not refering to using DoTs in this way. Also, can't we say that the use of ioun stones by casters in PvP is another form of "sniping".

This is against the rules. There was a time when people would flesh-to-stone people in the pit, then curse them and land other debuffs that reduce saves, then leave them there. The staff members dont allow this kind of stuff, and it is reportable. A player may use hold and other immobilizing effects, but they need to kill the held toon shortly.

This supports the pit being a different non-public instance, with a much higher platform that someone cant just get back on top of. That way there is no line someone can cross that makes them immune to retaliation. In order to leave the instance while still alive, an ability similar to the recall mechanic needs to be used, which cannot be used while "in combat".

As a semi-frequent lobster-dweller I have developed a few self imposed rules, mostly stuff that makes the fight between two feel less arbitrary and more fun.
    1) It's always ok to break the rules to kill someone who breaks the rules, the rules only make it more fun if it's mutual.
    2) Don't fight someone who's busy fighting someone else.
    3) Ledge dropping with dots, imbued slaying many shot, trip, stun, is not ok.
    4) Don't kill someone who has virtually no chance of defeating you.
That which does not kill you gives you experience points.

I have a simple rule for PvP, especially in the Lobster on Argonessan.

    1) In the pit? Fair game.

Level 1-20. Same rules apply to all. Willing to risk it all? Jump in. I'll hop in on my L20 Dark Monk Master Earth, or my freshly rolled L4 Halfling thrower build. What do I do when I inevitably die? Hop up on the ledge and respawn, heal up, and hop back in. I expect to kill and be killed while I'm down there. It's PvP. It's for doing something other than killing Kobolds in WW.

PvP has one rule, no griefing.

Griefing has specifically been defined by moderators. It's defined as immobilizing someone and NOT killing them.

    Examples
    hold person/monster and run away
    Fascinate and run away

    Otherwise anything goes.

lol pvp is the very definition of griefing. Anyone who says otherwise is full of something that comes out of a horse type animal.

The only downfall of that pit is they don't res inside so you can kill them hundreds of times until they quit the game.

In most games that feature PvP now, it tends to be pretty much consensual. It is not like there is only a few MMO's out there. In most of the ones I have played you have to go to a special area even that is seperated from the regular PvE play space.

Default it better than getting 50 mean tells from a disgruntled player

i killed this capped half orc barb fighter 18/2 and i thought it was cool as i am only a dwarf and he paid extra money for his race, well i killed him and then he starts the barrage of nasty tells calling me a noob and insisting i wont do it again, so i went down and kicked the **** outta him again (he couldn't even get me to 500 hp) and i get 15 more tells from him calling me a noob, asking how i enjoyed my ban, and stuff like that and i just replied to him that the ban gave me time to reevaluate my life and that i suggest he does the same and i put him amongst my "wall of shame" in my bio filled with people i have killed in pvp that sent me nasty tells afterward. if they get butthurt over a game i embarrass the hell outta them. i don't pvp to come off as some sort of "bad a$$" like some people do, but you will go in my bio if you act like a child about losing.

I've grieved some lowbies by staying on the top of the ladder. Their jump wasn't high enough, nor was their damage, so there was no way out of the arena for them but to die . I admit it was pretty evil, but it made my day .

LOLZ, i don't get it. I (lv9) in pit going to ladder, get frost lanced in the back by a Necro (lv13), who i did not do anything to (at least at the time of this event). Cool. I jump down & one shot said Necro with searing light. Then right on scheduled it starts /tell sent & I quote 'hit me with light 1moretime'. My response 'ok'. Mr. Necro continues 'if u do ill kill u'. My response 'ok'. So as promise I go ahead & one shot Mr. Necro. Mr. Necro then logs & returns as Mrs. FVS (lv20). I jump down & cast my unbelievably powerful, ultra destructor, uber light on her to no effect due to PLIS, in return I get fricasseed (just looked that up) by said fvs, who in turn sends /tell (after the fact) & I quote 'hit me with light(sic) now' to which I retort 'I just did' to which Mrs. FVS responds 'keep going loser'. LOLZ i don't get it but I like PVP.
