    Default Shadovar Monk -- 12 Wizard / 6 Monk / 2 Fighter

Post updated to take into consideration u15 items and epic content. Build is currently in active testing by Kodara of Ghallanda. Feedback and suggestions are welcome.

    -------------
Seventeen hundred years ago, the citizens of Thultanthar left Toril and escaped the cataclysm that befell Netheral in the aftermath of Karsus’s Folly. In that time they attuned themselves with the Plan of Shadow, gained favor with Shar, the Mistress of Night, and preserved the magic might of knowledge of the Netherese. In the year of wild magic they returned to Toril to retake their position of leadership.

Recently Loth opened a portal to Eberron, planning to claim that realm for herself. She has forgotten, however; that while she might be the rule over the Demonweb pits and the Drow of the Underdark, Shar hold dominion over the underdark itself and all that the darkness touches – She will not be denied her right to rule over Eberron by a lesser deity.

To pave the way for Shar’s eventual dominion over Eberron, she has charged her subjects to explore and report back on this new realm. To meet that end High Priest/Exarch, Rivalen Tanthul sent a number of his Shadow Monks to infiltrate and prepare Eberron for the coming of Shar.

    -----------

    Shadovar Monk:

The premise is the combine the dark influences of the Plane of Shadow, the magical tradition of the Shadovar and that a spin on the Order of the Dark Moon fitting them into a viable DDO build. Hence the Shadow Mage (Pale Master – Wraith form)/ Dark Monk was born.

The build should have nearly the survivability of a full PM, good cold/lightning dots (for boss fights), Dark Monk debuffs, and fair Melee dps.
Note the that the build states its Alignment is Lawful Neutral, but let me assure you that the magic’s of the Shadovar are powerful in deception … as any devoted servant of Shar, the heart, mind and soul, is Lawful Evil

    Flavor:

Alas, Rivalen Tanthul neglected to warn his shadow monks about the proclivity of Eberron mobs to spam light damage spells, and he hopes they don't come to regret their choice of career.

    Technical

I don't understand the +4 Resilience bonus to all saves.

Also, Mobility+Spring Attack is typically taken by Rangers who want the Tempest line - I don't think it's worth 2 feats. You should instead take Power Attack and Weapon Focus: Bludgeon (IMHO). Get lots of Divine Power clickies to be able to hit with PA on.

I think you're underestimating the role that the Lich form plays in the survivability of a PM, and overestimating your ability to land the Dark Monk curses.

However, based on the imaginative background, I can't deny that you'll have loads of fun on it.

agree, get wf and pa for more melee dps.

consider vampire form (you can always get incorporeal from shadow faid).

consider mabar robe of night if you have access or farm the abbot robe for the boon of undeath (huge increase in survivability).

slot holyburst on one of your rings.

after this I love the idea of the build

Look into a Phiarlan Mirror Cloak

Drop GH possibly; use scrolls. Acid Fog maybe?

If you can't fit burst on your TOD rings, consider swinging a weapon like epic Midnight Greetings?

Daerwen: Thanks you for the feedback on the flavor. I have always loved the realms (as long as you don't include the North), Moonsea/Dalelands in particular.

Phidius: Agreed on the light damage... the Epic Mirror Cloak will help (as Voodoogroves suggested)... Moving the Green Steel to belt, and using the Mirror cloak is much more survivable. As for Dodge/Mobility/Sping Attack -- that was a version control error on my part (fixed now) those feats were replaced with Toughness x2 and Resilience (took Resilience to boost saves while running around and would turn it off as soon as combat starts -- and honestly couldn't think of anything better with the slot other than a 4th toughness)

Korsat: Didn't do War forged as the realms doesn't believe in Cylons :-). Mostly style choice. It might be a better race option, but doesn't fit the theme. As for Power Attack.. I didn't take it because I thought that the -5 to hit would be an issue. Although the build has feats to spare it would be worth taking and trying out.. the +5 damage would be very welcome.

Mabar robe will be high on the shopping list, but Halloween is a ways off, and my full wizard pale master gets one first :-). I agree that the Abbot robe, litany, and a harm clicky would be great -- my issue is the raid itself. I either pug or duo with my wife, and there are not a lot of ways to learn abbot with those restrictions. Again, mostly a personal restriction, and the abbot gear would be a great upgrade for those that can run it. Holyburst on a ring is a great idea that I didn't even consider -- thank you (Looks like lots of TOD in my future)

As for Vampire form -- the x4 light damage just scares me, i don't like getting one shoted, by a random wright priest.

Voodoogroves: I could scroll GH, but couldn't find a whole lot else at lvl 6 that I would want (already have acid fog) -- open to suggestions though. As for epic Midnight Greetings.. I would love to use kukri's on this build, as it would fit the theme nicely, but that would make the the toon un-centered. -- thank you for the recommendation on the Mirror Cloak (forgot about that one)

Thank you all for the feedback

"Monks may use this weapon without becoming un-centered."

This would even allow an LR into a finesse build if desired and you had the gear to support it.

I like -- need to fit those in... Kukri's would be amazing (both flavor and build effectiveness)

    Also, somethings to consider.

Put +6 CHA skills SP on your neck slot and swap it in after buffing / etc. Torc after.

Make your ConOp an HP item.

Ring of the Stalker is very strong, consider it (and Shar-irific)

If you have a T3 Bold trinket, that is better to leave in all the time besides an Eardweller for the Exceptional Seeker + damage bonus + shocking blow. I mean, if you leave the earslug in all the time, it's gonna break ...

If you can swing a Mabar Cloak, also fun-sauce.

+1 rep.. thank you very much. Every time I think I have scoured the wiki... someone shows me an item that I didn't even know existed. Thank you again (update to build will be coming out later tonight)

Plenty of ways you can increase your reflex save. I've thought about your concept on the way home (and had a similar written up a while back, but some key things are different now).

Things I'd strongly suggest you fit in or find:

+3 DEX tome (so you can drop DEX to 14)
    Exceptional Seeker
    Exceptional Sneak
    Seeker
    Sneak
Intelligence 30 (for a +10 midnight greetings plus some skills)

Stat-wise, I'd probably drop STR to 16, but still put levels there. Increase INT as high as you can tolerate; 14 minimally.

Look at Mountain Stance for the damage avoidance (Earth 2)

Options on feats instead of Toughness.
    - Insightful Reflexes (esp. if you can hit a 30 INT)
    - I scanned through and didn't see Dodge (for Ninja Spy)
    - Improved Crit Slash (I'd contemplate taking whatever improved crits you can - slash, pierce and blunt all have options for you)

    STR 16 + 5 levels + 1 fighter + 2 rage + 7 item + 3 exceptional + 2 boat + 2 tome = 38 ... +2 stance, +2 yugo pot, etc.
    - That's reasonable for a melee

    INT 14 (say) + 6 item + 2 tome + 2 wizard +2 boat = 26
    - that's a +8 Midnight Greetings.
    - Putting +1 exceptional on a Midnight itself and one more enhancement in from Wizard would be 28 for a +9 Midnight Greetings
    - starting at a 16 would give you a 30 moderately easily
    - could toss a racial here to balance out and make even

    Reflex +5 monk + 4 wizard + 10 INT + 2 luck + 4 GH + 5 resistance = 29
    - not awesome, but not horrid either ... insight bonuses, etc. would all be on top of this
    - could always drop to water stance if you need/want a bit of a boost
    - don't forget Human Versatility

    Your to-hit would be a base of (2 fighter + 6 monk + 6 wizard = 14 BAB base)
    Attack 14 BAB + 10 item (if you can push a 30 INT) + 15 STR (assuming a 40) + 2 luck + 4 GH = 46
    - 52 if you're using a DP clickie
    - Sneak, Exceptional Sneak both add ... say another 6-7 ... 59 ish

If you can make a Cove Smallblade, those things are nifty hide/move equipment plus add a double strike chance - which may work better for you (YMMV) than dual Midnights.
Ghallanda - now with fewer alts and more ghostbane

Decided against Ninja Spy, 8 AP points and a feat seemed a bit much for 1d6 and short sword usage. As for weapons Midnight greetings meet the flavor better than the smallblade (and why wouldn't the Goddess of Night, give her favored subjects a weapon called Midnight Greetings).

I will see what I can do with the stats and post a revised build (improved crit slashing and power attack seem to make sense though)

I can't thank you enough for all your help

Here is the updated build incorporating the received feedback. Leveling will be a bit more difficult due to the need to take levels in a non-logical manner to get all the feats to fit. At cap the build should be very self-sufficient, able to cast no-fail heal scrolls, raise dead, be fairly hardy, do decent damage against mobs, and dot+melee damage during boss fights.

You should really consider upgraded shroud of the abbot for the body slot, 30 light resist, boon to undeath and don't have to waste cloak slot for that unimpressive phiarlan mirror cloak.

Agreed, but I don't find it likely that I will be able to ever get it. As I mostly pug, and don't know the puzzles it is unlikely that I will have the opportunity in the near future to run Abbot (I am always on the look out for those that are willing to take first timers though).

For those that run Abbot, the Shroud would be an excellent addition.

I'm playing around with a build like this currently. For the most part I use it for challenges or a just something to play on if my guildies are running lowbies. I originally built it to run as part of a pale master static group.

I'm currently at 6/3 wiz/monk and I'm at an impasse about whether to focus more on monk or wiz. I don't like the zombie form even with the die step increases because it makes the monk so SLOW and at this level I'm healing faster and better out of zombie form than in it.

Have you played this build, or is it hypothetical? Wondering if I could get some feedback from someone who has actually played a pale master/monk from 1-20.

I have not played it yet (I like planning the builds to 20 prior to starting them), but I am planning to play it for my next life.

This build was really setup for end game in mind, however; it shouldn't be too gimp while leveling. It should play like a typical wizard levels 2-9 (although a bit under powered due to monk at lvl1). Levels 10-14 will be weak (some twink gear, and taking it slow will help a lot). Was planning on using zombie form (as long as there are not light spell spamming wrights) while leveling, but that is really only viable once you have Death Aura and NEB (lvl 7 wiz). Once you hit level 15 and get Wraith (or Vampire if that is your flavor) form things should get a lot easier as you are getting significantly stronger every level until cap.

So as long as you can survive being a bit gimp levels 10-14, things should be pretty good.

    Good luck with the build

    Well figured I'd introduce myself...since it's my character ^_^

Andoris is my wonderful hubby who was nice enough to take my crazy idea and crunch the numbers. I know...geek love knows no bounds.

Figured people would want to know how this is playing and here it is:

I'm currently level 5 after my TR and faithfully following the build. Anyway here's my notes of the experience.

Being a first level monk again is hard and honestly...I wasn't all that thrilled with the look of the half-elf...but I got over it. Because eventually she'll be a wrath floating around and that is sexy.

First level not too hard...I run up I hit something and I go. Pretty basic but being a 16 strength instead of 18 is a difference but with the lesser stances it helps (I learned with my first monk go around that one does not ignore the power of the stances or their accompanying attacks)

Second level...oh boy WIZARD time! It's what else you expect from your first level wizard...I have some spells and that makes me happy. I use buffing spells and let my hubby concentrate on the fire power. This works very well. I can buff myself and go in it monk style.

Third Level about the same but the challenge is getting there...I mean NO evasion...ugh! Is there anything more depressing than when you're used to having it and then suddenly you don't have it anymore *sigh* and slow...could this wizard move any faster?! So no trap evasion makes things tricky and since I run around with my hubby's wizard yeah...traps = pwned.

Fourth level when you realize that yes this is awesome..I have stances some hit power and I can walk into a dungeon and buff myself and be awesome that way as my spells get better and at this point I've gotten a bit more used to the differences in play style. (Still haven't gotten used to being slow and no evasion)

Fifth level in progress...buffing is still fun as is scroll casting...but I can't tell you the number of times I forgot to put my handwraps back on...oopps...scrolls don't' do a lot of damage. I have no real offensive spells at this point. Everything I have is directed towards buffing. Which is fine I am much more the get in your face type. I have to say that boy it felt good to put my Jidz Tet'ka bracers on again....the armor bonus and the stance augment is awesome.

    Here's the current stuff:

    Goggles of Time Sensing
    Helm of Frost
Greater Bold Trinket/Voice of the Master
    Envenomed Cloak
    Acrobat's Ring
Robe of Invulnerability with a small guild augment crystal for hit points.
Skin of the Mockery handwraps...I have other wraps too but right now that's' what is equipped.
No necklace or belt and my other ring, gloves and boots are nothing special (read as really low level nonsense)

Current spells loaded: Mage Armor, Expeditious Retreat, jump, shield, Blur, Resist Energy and Glitterdust.

I scroll cast...Invisibility, knock, bulls strength and bear's endurance.

I use the fire stance but swap to the earth when I need the con boost and defense or wind when I need to "fly" I also favor using Strike the Enduring I for the extra flat 4 points of damage.

    That's about it for now.

    Any questions just ask!

If you are rocking Ghallanda just check out Kodara (I play most days) or just to hang out I have a level 18 water savant sorc Krystynia and it's easy to tell if I'm running a pug...I offer free cookies!!

Sooo...important rule for tonight...my hubby is randomly an idiot. so basically at level 6 take Toughness and not greater spell focus...somehow this little fact...like my hit points....was overlooked.

he's in the doghouse and I'm heading to bed after much in game dying.
