    Default DDO Crashed My Laptop

I'm already having the semi-common problem of losing the connection to the server when I first log in from a fresh boot. While annoying, all I have to do is log in again and I can get in fine.

Lately I have been having a more serious problem and was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I will be playing along smoothly when, randomly, my laptop shuts down. As in all the way down, not just a game crash. I then have to boot back up and log in twice again to get back in game, only to have it randomly shut down on me again. Some facts:

    - It only happens when I am in DDO. It never shuts down like that unless DDO is up and running.

    - It seems to only happen when I am logged in with my FvS, although that could just be because I play that toon more than the others.

    - I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling from a fresh download and I still have the problem.

Any help with this issue would be appreciated. It sucks to be afraid to join in a raid because the group might lose a healer during a critical moment.

Sounds like a heat issue. I reduced my new laptops heat issues by capping the processor at 80% in the power settings. A side benefit is that it seems to have reduced my lag in certain areas too as the fluctuations on CPU utilization can negatively impact game performance.

Another possibility is that some memory may be borderline and you may want to test it.

Heat was actually my first thought so I took the bottom off my laptop and blew everything out. Got rid of some dust and improved the airflow. Still have the same problem. I also feel the bottom of my laptop immediately after a crash to try and find a hot spot but it all seems to be fairly cool.

The memory thing is something I haven't looked into tho. Maybe that will solve things.

Just because you blew out some dust doesn't mean you can't/won't suffer from heat issues.

Find and download a heat monitoring program. That will easily tell you if it's a heat shutdown issue.

If you're more familiar with computers and Windows you could reboot after a shutdown and check the bios for the CPU temperature. If you don't know how to do that then you can look in the control panel in admin tools and find the error logs to see what is recorded by Windows as the reason for the shutdown.

Had the same problem in Big Top last night, also with my favoured soul.

Heat is not the issue, keeping at a constant 50-55*C.

Good idea. Ill check that the next time I crash.

Was that the first time it happened to you or has it happened before? It happens regularly to me.

What do you have your laptop sitting on while you're playing? I assume that no desk clutter is near the laptop.

Here's a free temperature monitor that I've been using for years:
    http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html
(I just get the zip version of it and run it from the folder.)

Are you seeing any error messages when your laptop shuts down? Does your laptop shut down completely, or does it simply reboot?

How old is your laptop? I've had aging systems start to shut down by themselves with certain programs, and they've usually had issues with their power supplies or motherboards.

Could you post a DXDiag report?

It sits on a ventilated table specifically for laptops and the fan vent is kept clear (unless I want to keep my dinner warm ).

There are no messages, just a Fade To Black, instant shut down. Gotta hit the power button to bring it back up.

The laptop isn't new but isn't yet old, about 2 years old.

Heat doesn't seem to be the issue. Had a crash this morning, immediately powered back up and checked the temp in the BIOS and it was well within safe levels.

Ran a memory test and it came back with no problems found.

Don't know what the deal is but it is effectively keeping me from playing at the moment.

It still seems to be limited to only my FvS toon but I'm about to log a couple hours on my monk to see if that is the case.

    DXDiag to come.

You're not helping here. Just because your computer crashed doesn't mean it's even remotely related to the OP's problem. If you have an issue start your own thread.

I doubt that it's related to a single character, but anything is possible.

Did you find anything in the admin log?

I had an idea but this _should_ involve the computer restarting and not just shutting down, it's worth taking a look at anyways. Perhaps it is just DDO crashing but your Windows is configured to shut down on errors. Check it out with the steps below

    1) Click on the Start button and then on Control Panel.
    2) Click on the System and Security link.

Note: If you're viewing the Small icons or Large icons view of Control Panel, you won't see this link. Simply double-click on the System icon and proceed to Step 4.

    3) Click on the System link.
    4) In the task pane on the left, click the Advanced system settings link.
    5) Locate the Startup and Recovery section near the bottom of the window and click on the Settings button.
    6) In the Startup and Recovery window, locate and uncheck the check box next to Automatically restart.
    7) Click OK in the Startup and Recovery window.
    8) Click OK in the System Properties window.
    9) You can now close the System window.

If it is heat, and you continue to do this, you are just frying out your GPU as by now it could be already damaged. I've seen this in standard PCs.

The black screens, however, are not related to your logging in and staying logged in problem. There have been several people trying to figure that one out. To date, no good clue.
But out of curiosity, who made your NIC? Was it nVidia via one of their NForce controllers?

I had heat issues when I gamed on my laptop. Did a couple things to improve mine's cooling.

First I got a really good cooling pad. Highly recommend this Targus one. It has 2 really good fans in it, tons of ventilation holes, and holds the laptop at a comfortable angle.

Second thing I did was buy a cheap clip on desk fan. Run under 10 bucks at Walmart. Get the powered ones not the battery kind. Clipped the fan to my laptop table and angled it so it blows cool air on the laptop and through the underside of the Targus cooling pad.

That greatly reduced the heat coming from the laptop.

I went a step further but only recommend this if you know what your doing. I took 2 fans from an older cooling pad, cleaned them up and mounted them inside the Targus cooling pad. Ran their usb cord out the side and plugged it up. It has enough space in the front of the pad to add 2 more fans. So now I have 2 cooling fans on the RAM and hardrive near the front of PC and 2 under the back of the pc cooling the CPU. Gave me a huge temperature decrease and more stability.

The computer model listed in your dxdiag does have an issue with overheating. The system does not measure heat correctly. Sony has issued a bios update to correct this problem. The bios they have is newer than the bios listed in your dxdiag. You can find the information, as well as the bios update here.

Unfortunately, my Kung Fu is not as strong as it was when I was an IT/Comm Guru in the Air Force. All I could gather from the Event Viewer in Admin Tools was that "The previous system shutdown at 3:27:13 PM on ‎4/‎24/‎2012 was unexpected." Couldn't find anything specific as to why.

Good info. I disabled the auto shutdown so we'll see.

Good idea, but I'm already running on a decent cooling pad for it. I don't think it is a heat related issue but I could be wrong.

I have actually tried several times to update my BIOS with that Flash Update. However, everytime I try it tells me I am already running a current version. When I load the BIOS after a power up it does state the updated version so it just adds to my confusion.

    Dear Sony customers,

Sony takes pride in the quality of its products. Recently, we became aware of a potential issue affecting certain units within the VPCF11 and VPCCW2 series of notebook PCs.

In rare instances, these notebook computers may overheat due to a potential malfunction of the internal temperature management system, resulting in deformation of the product's keyboard or external casing, and a potential burn hazard to consumers.

If you have one of the VPCF11 or VPCCW2 series models, Sony recommends that you download and install a firmware update specifically designed to prevent the potential overheating symptom.

Click here for information on how to locate the model number of your notebook PC.
Click here to verify your model and install the update.

If you have any questions or need additional assistance with the firmware update installation, call Sony technical support at (866) 496-7669 for assistance.

The satisfaction of our customers is our number one priority, and we will work diligently to ensure that your VAIO notebook is in top working order. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your support in this matter.

    Sincerely,

    Mike Lucas,

Good info. I disabled the auto shutdown so we'll see.
    ----------- BIG Warning -----------

You disabled the auto shutdown, and that's fine. But that means you MUST monitor the temperatures constantly. Some software will only poll the CPU every 10-15 seconds and that is not good enough.

The good news is that most CPU's for many many years now include a failsafe sensor and will shut themselves off. But reaching those kinds of temperatures can reduce the life of your CPU.

You should see your CPU reach 45-50 Celcius or so, 60 is high but acceptable, at 70 it's time to start worrying and shutting down. At 80 it's panic time. All CPU's are different but most of them auto shut down between 85 and 105.

    ------------ End Warning -------------

OK, now that's over. Try playing DDO with the temperature sensor running on top of ddo, or DDO in Windowed mode so you can see the tray icon of the temperature software. Get the software to poll and display every 5 seconds at most, real time is better.

Play DDO, if the temperature stays normal (~40-50) then keep playing to see if it crashes. Don't actually run a quest, you'll get distracted, just run around and jump and do silly things. You still want to pay attention to the temperature.

If the temperature spikes then you know the issue. If it doesn't then keep playing around to see if DDO crashes. If it crashes and Windows stays running you will have an error log or at the very least, an entry in the admin logs about what went wrong.
