Default Excess of Epic seals / shards

    Hello epic folks,

Assume you open an epic chest and find a seal / shard that no party member needs.

    There are 2 options:
    1. someone loots it and maybe in 5 years creates a char that might potentially use it
    2. simply throw it away (needs not to contradict 1. since there are some epic items that are quite poor)

For epic scrolls we have that great 3:1 trading option.
NO, I am not gonna suggest to copy it for shards & seals.
But you could implement another trading option, like a lottery for example:
Insert epic shard / seal and maybe you get out of it:
    - renown / xp potion
    - mana potion
    - some tome (3% chance)
    - a random seal / shard (1% chance)
    - blade of the dark six (aka nothing) (40% chance)
    - d6 epic dungeon token fragments (10% chance)
    - random stuff

i like these, with the exception of the one in RED

seals/shards are hard enugh to get that you should always get SOMETHING for them

It would promote seal/shard hoarding, something not a lot of people would like.

Even if somebody got a shard or seal that they didn't actually need, they might go ahead and loot it anyways (as opposed to putting it up for roll).

this could be mitigated by making the rewards nice (as in better than a useless eal sitting in a bag) without being "omg, WANT!!!"

Just brainstorming here, but how about something like seal/shard breakdown?

    1. Shards inserted into an Altar will break down to a random Seal from the same quest line.
    2. Seals inserted into an Altar will break down to a random Scroll from the same quest line.

The only disadvantage being that people may hoard the seals/shards so they can break them down and sell them on the Auction House as scrolls, but we should also start to see a drop in the cost of scrolls if that happens.

    Another idea, seal/shard trade in.

Two specific seals will give you another specific seal (as a forumla, i.e. Seal of Garos' Malice + Seal of Fullplate of the Ringleader = Seal of Illusionist's Garb). This would be a chest trade in working exactly how the Cauldron of Sora Katra works. It could greatly reduce your grind to find that one seal or shard that you've been looking for.

i would expect to see a lot fewer people passing seals and shards if this was the case. it would make me kinda sad. i know i've given away a number of seals and shards for perfectly good items because i had no intention of using them, and i've gotten a few that way too.

i'd hate to see that go away because someone wants another exp elixir for their next TR.

Good point, I underestimated human greed.

A workaround might be to "mark" seals / shards that were not yours when the chest opened, but passed on from another player.
That way only "marked" seals / shards could be allowed to enter the lottery.

Positive: No more point for the opener to loot useless shard himself
Negative: You might get some greedy competition rolling for that shard xD

I think the idea died right now

If having too many epic ingredients is a problem, then I'd say you're doing pretty good!

Is it no problem if people are running Epic Claw of Vulkoor on a daily basis for weeks not getting anything remotely useful ?

Well, no... I believe that's called WAI in turbine speak. Believe me, I feel your pain. Over a year in game, but no epic items yet. Well that's ok, because I don't want any epic items!

*Stands atop the building and shouts to the world*
"You hear me, game server? I do NOT want to ever make any epic items. So go right ahead, and drop all those uber rare things, I don't care! I don't want them. "
    *Crosses fingers behind back*

On the other hand though, you ARE still getting epic tokens and maybe scrolls now and again so it's not like it's a complete waste of time.

Best advice I can give on epic gear is not to look for it. Do the epic quests for the challenge, the fun, the experience of feeling EPIC! If you run the quest ad-nauseum just for that one special thing, you'll probably get ticked off, and then have to come to the forums to blow off steam and ask for change... oh wait...
