    Default New to DDO - My first Build - need critque

    Greetings,

    There is much I don't understand about this game still - but I am loving it so far.

    I am playing a THF paladin (7th level ATM) and I just love this class.

    I'm trying to understand this class better by making a build and would like some critique.

    My goals are a THF soloing toon with traps and lock skills - I'm not concerned about end game or raiding ATM - but I dont want to be too gimped. I want strong DPS with lots of combat clicky options - survivability - self heals - the ability to open locks -disable traps - and find secret doors and to be able to use magic devices.

    I'm not too concerned about enhancements yet - but following Junts paladin guide I have a good idea of what I want.

    Here is my build - I suspect its isnt very good as i am so noob - please take a look and advise me on where i go wrong.

    not bad.

    some things i thing you should be aware of -


    I would consider knocking down your cha down a tad (you get a +2 tome for hitting 1750 favor)

    That would let you raise your dex/str/con for better open skills/damage/hp respectivly

    In your enhancments, i would strongly recommend taking either the defender of siberys prestige. But! the other side of this is that for survivablity, the hunter of the damned is attractive as well - especially for a first lifer with little resources. The healling amp is good along with immunity to neg levels and ghost touch on everything you wield. Stay away from knight of the chalice.

    The third thing that i would recommend - drop extend and all 3 thf feats. Look up twitching and use it. This lets you pick up emp heal/empower, maximize, shield mastery, and improved sunder. Combined with healing amp, that is some good self healing right there.

    I would listen to Junts first.

    I would also recommend keeping extend (if not the THF feats). Zeal and other buffs are just too short. Empowered healing might be great, but I wouldn't put on maximize.

    Hopefully paladins will get a much needed buff in July.

    Paladins get very few skill points per level, and to be a successful trapper you need lots of skill points. IMHO, just two levels of Rogue won't do it if you want Paladin as your primary class. Also, Paladin's best abilities come at levels 18 (i.e. tier 3 prestige) and level 20 (capstone). As a result, unfortunately being a Paladin and a Trapper do not mix well because of this. I think you should pick either being a good Paladin, or a good trapper. If you want to melee and do traps as well, then consider playing a Ranger. They got lots of skill points per level and Ranger/Rogue mixes work well.

    You can leave your "Open Lock" skill at 4 ranks, and put those extra skill points into Search/Disable Device. 4 ranks and a starting Dex of 8 will allow you to get every non-epic lock in the game provided that you keep your gear and tools at the highest level you can use.

    And I only say "non-epic" because I haven't tried all of those.

    Then, when you are done reading it, read it again.

    After this, carefully dissect the paper and write a summary of the most important aspects of his post.

    One thing i would recommend if you want to go with this mix is to take the first two rogue levels right at the start.

    You maximize your rogue skills right out of the gate instead of getting half ranks after level 1. In addition, you can get evasion at that point as well. Just doesnt make sense to go 9p/1r.

    thats not the point.

    at lower levels you may not have access to the best of gear and tools. Having those skills maxxed out can make a big difference.

    Wisdom 10 is absolutely useless, put 8 and use the extra points in con or str

    Take maximize spell so you can better heal yourself. HotD for more healing amp. Human recovery but probably just 2 tiers because it's expensive.

    Drop stunning blow. Stunning blow is great on the right build but this isn't one of them, your DC will be too low.

    Extend spell is helpful, especially at lower levels. Some paladins will pick quicken instead which in your case might be a good idea if you plan on soloing hard quests.

    Thanks for all the advice - even if it appears that I have not taken it directly know that I have gave it a lot of thought and consideration - all of your suggestions have help me understand trades and balancing a little better and I appreciate the input - some of this I'm just gonna have to play and succeed or fail - thankfully there are lots of servers and as a premium with 4 slots and 4th and 7th veteran benefit I can try out different things before I commit to my main build- thanks again

    Your build looks solid! Keep in mind that divine might is a lot of DPS. To qualify for DM3 you need a charisma of 18 and DM4 you need a charisma of 20. Tomes count for the requirement. Charisma 20 isn't realistic yet, but if you could get a charisma of 16 and use a +2 tome(your 1750 favor tome then you can get DM3. You could lower your constitution by 1 point if you choose to do so. Either way it looks good though. Enjoy the build
