If misspelling the forum website, you can end up on what seems to be a fraud website

I tried to manually type in "forums.ddo.com" so that my browser would take me directly to these forums. But, I missed by one letter, and was immediately brought to a website that told me I had won and encouraged me to claim my prize. I was not able to close the browser or navigate to another website until I finally opened up the task manager and closed the browser that way.

Nasty little surprise, that.

No, this isn't an April Fool's post.

I don't know if there's anything Turbine can (or should) do. But, some kind of warning seems appropo, and hopefully nobody else visiting this forum falls into that particular trap.

Even with the possibility of being infected with something I still had to do it :P

But yeah, I think if the name is similar enough and the content is clearly scam / fraudulent then Turbine does have the ability to have the site taken down, (I could be wrong here but from my limited knowledge on the subject I believe this to be true).

It's called typosquatting, and is a popular method of revenue generation for the people who wish to practice it and don't mind losing their domains once in a while.

According to the ACPA, typosquatting is illegal and a UDRP could be filed against the owner. Filing a UDRP isn't cheap, but it's in the best interest of the rights holder which in this case is Turbine.
