    Unhappy Characters turning left non-stop

For the past couple weeks every now and then my characters, while questing, start turning slowly to left, non-stoppable! I thought it was my gamepad, so exchanged for a new one, but it is still happening! I have to exit the game after pushing every button I can think of, and some that others suggested (like the arrow buttons on my keyboard, etc.) I play alone, with hirelings, so it gets rather expensive if I have to exit the game and the hires are over 60 minutes old. Once I reenter (at the same point) everything is okay again - except I have lost my Gold Hires!

This happens to me fairly often (usually at a big fight or tricky jump over lava or something) - all I do is alt-tab out of the game and back in, and problem solved. No need to close the game and restart, etc.

Of course, it helps that I play in windowed mode to begin with, but should work even if you play in full-screen.

When it happens to me I just start hitting all the other movement and jump keys repeatedly and randomly and that usually works. I think it is some weird combination that causes it so hitting them all randomly fixes it for me.

Since you play from a gamepad I'm going to assume that this is being caused by your stick not being zeroed properly.
If there is software that came with the gamepad try to use that to zero it out. If not, you can get third party software to do it, but you'll need to have that software running at all times while playing.
Here's an example of freeware that can do it if you need.

This only happens to me with certain toons: BillElliot, RichardPetty, BobbyLabonte, ****Trickle and NASCARNellie...

Seriously though, the Alt-Tab is my fix...

The fact that it is happening regularly to many players as well as the OP would suggest that it is a game issue rather than his game controller surely....

When it happens to me I just minimize the game screen then maximise it again and I will have stopped doing it.

Two things you can try that have worked for me in the past. Neither require leaving/minimizing the game.

    1) Go into the Keymapping screen in the Options panel and increase the dead zone for the joystick.

    2) Unplug your gamepad for at least five seconds and then replug it in.

The first won't actually fix the problem, but will make it so the game doesn't register the movement. This could affect performance if the drift is really bad. The second will re-center your pad when the game recognizes it again. As noted by others, your gamepad may come with software to re-center the joystick(s) or you might be able to get third party software to do it. For me the unplug/replug works well.

    Default Characters turning left non-stop

THANKS SO MUCH for all your ideas - I will certainly try them out! I DO play in minimized screen, so 'changing screens', unplugging gamepad, and the alt-tab, are certainly something I will try. (I don't know what 'increasing the dead zone' means - but hopefully one of the above will do the trick! THANKS again!

The dead zone is the area of movement that keeps the joystick in a neutral position, i.e. not registering a command to do something. The larger the dead zone, the greater the allowed movement of the joystick without it actually doing anything. The smaller the dead zone, the more sensitive the joystick is to movement and it will react sooner to input.

Right. And each joystick has an X and a Y axis, which range from +3 to -3 (or +10 to -10, depending on the joystick), that are supposed to start at 0 for both. The problem is that they usually don't. You'll have one that actually starts at +0.2541846 X and -0.4197642 Y.
That slight imbalance, which isn't noticeable from a resting position to your eyes or fingers, is actually registering a small amount of movement on the stick. As the game uses mouse movements for control, and your gamepad emulates that mouse movement with the stick, DDO thinks you're slowly moving your mouse to the left ALL the time.
One of the functions of the program will allow you to add a virtual *new* zero setting while the program is running, which should solve the problem (if that is indeed the problem).
