Default Colorful crash of entire machine with Nvidia Quadro FX 3800 when casting

    Hi all,

I had this issue before, posted about it, can't find it, so I am re-creating with updates.

When casting protection from elements (100% repro, other spells and groups casting cause it too), the game can crash the entire machine with a screen covered in a rainbow of colors.

When I move the camera back, it doesn't repro 100% of the time with the same spell, but it will crash 100% of the time when close up (just behind the character), or when in a raid when other players are spamming buffs.

Looks like an obvious shader issue.

Which options control the spell effects shaders? This would help me isolate the issue.

Below is relevant dxdiag info on the system, which is no longer using engineering sample parts:

I believe the spell effects shaders are the video post-processing effects, so you could adjust or turn off some of those. I don't recall an actual "particle effects" setting in there.

Disabling Anisotropic Filtering (or turning it to as low as possible) might also help. I see that Antialiasing is already disabled, otherwise I would've suggested disabling that as well.

Have you tried running in DirectX9 mode?

I was thinking of trying dx 9 mode, but thought it may take away a ton of the shiney . But I will give those a whirl and report back. Thanks.

Disabling post processing effects seems to have stopped it. I couldn't cast fast enough buffs in close or far to make it crash. I will update after trying a heavier shader situation.

Thanks. Now hopefully this can be fixed so I can have those on.

    An Update:
I ran with the Effects disabled until I cast Fireshield (ice version). Same crash. When I went back in, I switched it to dx9 and it just crashed while running through Gianthold, no spells.

Guess it is time to file a bug and call it sad.

Honestly, that sounds like a dying graphics card or time for a re install due to file corruption.

I agree with Missing. The only time I've ever had a screenful of a rainbow of colors has been when either my graphics card was crashing, or when I was overclocking the video RAM so high that it would overheat.

The same issue happens onf 5 different quadro fx 3800's. I got them for me and my kids' machines and because the crashes in ddo no matter what driver we used, I had to purchase replacements for all of us. So I highly doubt all 5 cards have been dying for the last three years.

Bear in mind that Quadro model cards aren't 3d gaming based models, they're designed as 2d, 3d modelling/video editing 'graphics workstation' cards so they don't have alot of the higher end 3d graphics support (e.g. shaders, high texel etc) that the Geforce line of cards have. They're designed more around stability in an editing/rendering situation rather than 'bleeding edge' 3d graphics rendering mainly.

This type of crashing definitely sounds like graphics related, they might be unable to support the games higher settings and shutting down.

I would definitely try disabling the lighting and shadows options under ADV Graphics and see what changes those have, post processing is one item that those model cards are not going to handle well in a 3d game but also anything that makes use of shaders and other options they don't support would certainly also contribute.

Posting the complete dxdiag file might help narrow down any other additional possibilities but based on the description it definitely centers around the cards ability to support the games features.

I will give it a try and see what it offers. They did for a while have quadro drivers built around gaming instead of workstation/rendering.
Information on the card shows it should be able to handle shaders just fine:
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/product...x_3800_us.html
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/product...x_1800_us.html

I will get a full dxdiag on here when I get home. Not saying it isn't a graphic card issue, but the driver or the codepath for those shaders have to be looked at and addressed. I am using a quadro fx 1800 and it works fine, but just a bit slower in performance than the 3800.

    Heading over to:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia_Quadro
And you can see that an fx 1800 uses a G94 gpu core and the fx3800 uses a G200GL core. If you dig around in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NVIDIA_GeForce you can find which consumer cards were made from those cores.

3 years... actually, depending on use, I'd believe it with nVidia. I'm not joking, and standing by what I stated currently.
That time frame is not a good one. There were die issues around then let alone they were trying to properly heat sink voltage regulators. My 8800 didn't last but maybe a year, and that was a die issue.
Wife's fan didn't last much longer, but I but I just replaced the whole heat sink unit and that continued its life until we got her a new one, just was a bit touchy now and then. I'm just glad we caught the fan issue before it was too cooked.

Now it could be a shader issue that you suspect, but if so that is really on nvidia's head and not Turbine any more given how they are used. Also I've seen several posts about nvidia's current drivers causing issues for people.

Poking around the web for reviews and comments, I came up with a few things.

First its big on heat, which is always the bane of video cards.

Second, lots of people seem to have issues making it work reliably on Win 7. Several comments about driver crashes when in Win 7 64 bit. I even found a few comments that the drivers on the CD corrupted Win XP.

On the plus side, people who do video editing really seem to like it, though most found it expensive when they bought it in 2010.
The problem is never how to get new, innovative thoughts into your mind, but how to get old ones out. Every mind is a building filled with archaic furniture. Clean out a corner of your mind and creativity will instantly fill it.

For the workload I put on my machines and their parts, Nvidia is the only solution that can handle it. My pile of busted ATI's is quite larger than my pile of Nvidia's. I know about the die issue and some other issues with manufacturing in their hardware. Can't help what bad labor does.
I specifically picked the 18 and 3800 because they are known to be solid performers.

Ddo is the only product that has this happen. I don't know what calls are made with their shaders, so I can't compare other games to it.

Does anyone know of another game that uses the same kind of shader code as ddo? That would isolate it to a driver issue versus a code issue in the game.

Yeah, that is why the workstations are built the way they are. On top of that, I can repro the crash from a cold start.

It was an expensive card when it came out. Still is for the most part, lol.

I could repo my crashes from a cold start as well even though everything else ran fine. Code hits hardware differently. I'm not saying you are wrong, but just asking you to not disregard it.

Honestly though, I do hope it is software and something can get fixed for it. Replacing hardware is normally painful to the wallet.

Oh, I hope it is fixed too. Either side. I wouldn't even mind if the driver had a patch to change the shader path to do a trick to allow it to work. The perf difference between the 1800 and the 3800 is staggering, so I would like to get some use out of them instead of spending money again on new hardware.

Would be different if they were under any kind of warrenty. But they aren't.

For the sake of information, here is the full dxdiag. I plan on getting a gtx 680 soon, so I won't hopefully have any issues with the game crashing.

    Don't do it!

By all accounts, the GTX 680 is an amazing piece of hardware, the first time that NVidia has released a perfomance/power/price(*) combo that blows the doors off the competition since the ill-fated GeForce 200 (curse you, underfill!).

You'll be depriving yourself of suffering, and of hours spent troubleshooting. What will you do with your time?!? Be productive and video-edit? Srsly.

(*) Potentially. Right now, they have no reason to drop prices. Manufacturing process leaves room for a drop of 40% by around this time next year, if NVidia got their act together process-wise (compared to Fermi) and their yields are good (**), and if AMD decides to attack NVidia on price, as otherwise there's no incentive to lower margins.

(**) Fermi yields didn't matter as much, NVidia paid by the "good die". TSMC wised up, the new contract has NVidia pay by the wafer, like everyone else in the industry does. Hence the warning during the investor call about yields. Doesn't mean Kepler yields are bad, just means yields will start hitting NVidia's bottom line.

By soon, I mean after I can squirrel the money away for it. I am putting the 3800s up for sale, so after they are gone, then I will look to get a 680. By then the price will be a lot less than what it is now. Maybe a year will pass for it. Who knows.
