    Thumbs up Ddo: Next

    SO!

    What's NEXT?

    I can see this Forgotten Realms expac going 2.5-5 years or so (IDT they will adopt a WoW like policy of 1.5 year expacs like they have now. But I predict there will be more expacs in which even VIPs must shell out some cash to upgrade) , but what will come after that?

    NOW I know there was some talk of whether Wizards would renew Turbine's liscensce to use D&D, while 4E was at its height it was speculated they might not because DDO uses 3rd edition when they were pushing 4th edition. The upcomming Neverwinter MMO (formerly being worked on by Atari, but sold to Perfect world Entertainment) will be using 4E mechanics and be f2p on launch.

    HOWEVER- 4E is on its way out, and if you've been reading about "5E D&D NEXT" the company realizes that 4E alienated fans of other editions (really the shift to a new edition and drastic changes was more an intellectual property measure). 5E supposedly will let people play a 1-4th edition "style" character through a series of sub systems, along side those playing characters of any other style. You could be 1E style guy, streamlined with no skills, or 3E with lots of skills and feats, or 4E with powers all at the same table and be balanced.

    But I've digressed, my point is the company's ethos has changed and their motto for 5E is "Play The Game You Want To Play". This makes me believe that Wizards will renew Turbine's liscensce and the game WILL go on. This first expac is evidence of this I think.

    Now.....what could come after Forgotten Realms? Personally I want

    * PLANESCAPE: Please?!?!?!
    * Dark Sun: Psionic classes?

    Planescape, that was one difficult rpg.
    Very complex storyline IIRC.

    Personally, I'd like to see more Forgotten Realms content.

    I'll be perfectly happy if Turbine never make a quest outside FR from now on.

    But for nostalgic reasons a trip to Greyhawk would be really nice. Would love to meet Mika-Oba and Gord there

    Yesterday I talking to an ... official rep ? He said to me that "about half" of the players have "run away" after the 4th edition hd beein introduced,

    "and now they are playing with open cards and invite anyone into the development process who wants to prticipate".

    He also said that the current intention of 5E is to "combine the best of both worlds into a new system", and that they probably might get away with any version number at all.

    I'm curious how this will work out.

    I don't mean this in an insulting way or anything, I'm just curious...

    ...why do so many people love Faerun so much? I just don't get it. That setting -BLEEDS- generic.

    That's probably exactly why people love Faerun/Forgotten Realms: It's familiar. Sure, it has its own little quirks and such, but most things are fairly recognizable.

    I'd love to see something based on 2nd Edition Sigil and Planescape for a lot of end-game stuff, it's the perfect environment for it.

    My ideal release schedule....

    December 1st 2012: DDO: The Heartlands (expansion focused on the classic FR areas of Cormyr, Baldur's Gate, and the areas in between)

    June 1st 2013: DDO: The Mysteries of Undermountain (expansion focused on the undermountain dungeon and city of waterdeep...full fledged FR low level to high level questing)

    December 1st 2013: DDO: The Empire of the Shades (expansion about the Shadovar which expands the FR areas to the Sea of Fallen Stars and the dale lands).

    June 1st 2014: DDO: Under the Burning Sun (dark sun expansion)

    Decemeber 1st 2014: DDO: The Cold Lands (expansion focused upon northern part of Faerun and other like areas on Eberron)

    June 1st 2015: DDO: The Nexus of the Planes (planescape expansion)

    Meanwhile having two good updates between expansion with content focused more on Eberron until 2014 at which point more darksun stuff comes in and after that more planescape stuff.

    The idea being that by Mid next year FR is a full fledged setting for adventuring 1-level cap (as is Eberron with mid expansion updates focusing on cap/near cap stuff for there) and other worlds being introduced each year.

    Actually 4E is almost dead. It's just a matter of time. It never took off and they are currently in the planning stages for 5E.

    Nostalgia ofc.

    And all the best computer games have been based on it.

    First FR game I played was Curse of the azure bonds, since then I have played them all and loved every minute

    Pool of Radiance, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Salvatore books. Even people who aren't D&D fanatics know and love the Forgotten Realms. It may be generic, but to me it feels like "real" D&D.
