The rats in a maze aren't so bad if you have a way to kill the hostile monsters in the maze. Getting the rats through the mazes themselves is easy.

Although I certainly wouldn't complain if one of the maze rooms was taken out entirely.
Kobold sentient jewel still hate you.

If an aggro hound of an NPC can be felled in one or two random hits to auto-fail a mission, then that's not fair and it's bad mission design.

Edit: I don't know if Matuse is suggesting this (maybe yes, maybe no), but it is evidence of bad design.

Players often memorize a very specific set of actions and then need to execute them well for platform games. Why should DDO call for the kind of memorization and twitch reflexes associated with a platform game?

The solution is to turn "Keep Coyle alive" into an optional mission objective, for both missions in which he appears. Problem solved.

With "Raise Dead" in the game, "guard or fail" missions are almost never justified, in addition to being annoying for many players.

Best way to deal with him in the past was to have him aggro on an iron golem, then have the golem aggro on someone who can heal themself (but be able to keep the aggro), and have Coyle beat on it til everyone finished the quest.

Given the option, I'd kill him, even if I ended up failing the quest. I don't want his blood on some nameless mob's name. I want his blood on Ryon's hands, or Dump Truck's metalic fingers.

    May Coyle rest...in pieces.

He would still die in a one hit too, just because he's Coyle.

    I'd TOTALLY /Sign that one.

    1. Start quest.
    2. Coyle gets killed in .4 seconds zerging into a could of mephits.
    3. Finish killing bad guys
    4. Cast Rez on Coyle
    5. Profit.. ?!?!?

I always wondered why a mission would fail when someone dies. It's DDO! Just put the stone in your backpack and zerg to the next shrine. Problem solved.

I hated Coyle even before I started playing DDO.

One of my close friends played since 2006 and also happened to be DM of our tabletop group.
Coyle just so happened to be the name of the sadistic villain in one of our campaigns. I forget the details leading up to it, but all I remember is our characters coincidentally found a stash of Raise Dead scrolls after we were able to kill him.

Long story short, our characters ended up repeating a cycle of raise, kill, raise, kill, until we ran out of scrolls, much to the pleasure of our DM.

And that's how I met Coyle!

    I approve of this.
DDO: If a problem cannot be solved by the application of DPS, you're not applying enough.
