Default ability to deal with trolls and trolling in the game.

I am just wondering if we need to have some mechanisms to deal with trolling and trolls within the game. More and more I have come across people who have joined to ruin the game for others. They join a group and zerg ahead despite descriptions being "be group minded" or "no zerg". They enter a quest early if timed or generally deliberately try to do the wrong thing to get ppl riled up.

I would like to be able to dismiss someone from a group within a quest if they are zerging ahead (usually I withdraw and start again..I want to experience the quest property ...not have someone who has done it a thousand times arrogantly run ahead and do what needs doing in 5 minutes). I also think the party leader should have the ability to enter a quest first with the ability to open hard or elite bestowed upon them if one member has that ability.

To me there is an elemement in our harbour area at the moment (cannith) that is really spoiling the game..for example toons begging plat or ingredients from people.

Just wondered if anyone else was having problems and if so do they find it getting worse or am I just having bad luck (started a new toon so I am playing low level quests...so maybe that is it...trolls don't have the brains to level too high).

Also how do ppl find they get over this. I noticed one lfm saying tr's only and was puzzled...but maybe that's their way of dealing with the problem?

Thanks for your response...ps please ignore trolls within this format as well! I will :-)

    1. Unfortunately Dismissing people inside quests is no longer allowed because leaders used to be able to use this to grief people who'd legitimately completed said quest out of loot and even the xp/favour if they dismissed before the end boss.
Pretty certain this won't ever come back.

    2. The harbour is the same on every server {except Wayfinder of course - Cos no-one's ever online}. I always end up hitting /squelch regularly if I spend anytime in the harbour.

    3. TRs only is a gamestyle that I personally don't agree with. {There are plenty of TRs out there with far less experience ingame than you'd believe}.

    4. You made a great suggestion about only the party leader being able to open the quest - This I agree with 100%.

Ok being serious, I think the party leader also needs to give permission, a lot of times (with me at least) friends who are too far apart in their levels might just form a party so they can chat some stuff up, while soloing their own quests or doing whatever.
    Otherwise great idea.

Trolls exist either as enemies to fight, or in the forums.

What you're describing falls to either the newb category or the elitism psyche, depending on situation.

Start the group listed as a No Zerg party.
Most that would join such a party will probably understand that you want to enjoy the adventure.
Not just jump to the end and get your XP & end loot/rewards.

If for some reason someone added does end up zerging ahead with indifference, then /squelch that one, maybe write their name down and hope for a better experience later.

Just give the opener the star - Once the quests are open others can go into whichever they choose.

For the problem of needing an opener for hard/elites this may cause griefing of party leaders by the opener dismissing them once the star had changed hands of course - My suggestion here is if anyone in party can open elite the party leader should also be able to open elite.

Oh. Right. And it's generally just friends who do that anyway, since no one just hangs around a dismissing d-bag to talk things up.

yes I agree with all comments so far...one lfm I saw taoday said "have some social skills" so maybe this covers it as well.

Seriously though I think this mechanism has merits. It stops ppl accidently opening a quest early when timed.like cartmans or archer defense (think i have the right ones here) etc. IT also allow the party leader ...and no they aren't the "boss" but they have started the lfm... and my etiquette has always been to find the person who started the lfm and join them.... I also allow them or someone else to open the quest and I follow their lead unless they say they don't want to lead. I have been in brilliant quests too. It gives a real high to have a group minded team who pull together and complete the quest.

    Thanks for feedback so far.

No to ever dismmsing from group in a quest its a bad idea and thats why they dropped it there is no way to do in a way that wont be abused just reform group and remember that person and maybe their guild as well /squelch is your friend as well if you really think someone is griefing you in a quest maybe running off with a required item or destroying a quest objective report them for harashment.

Being able to boot people within a quest would turn into a griefing tool.

Use the squelch function and move on.

Had a person greifing a hox run I was in last night by intentionally pulling beholders into the center. He knew it was bad, every person there had told him. We completed anyway. My advice: reform, if you dont want to reform be so much better than the troll, that he cant make you fail.

When I joined a year and a bit ago, the troll population on Thelanis was pretty minimal, and mostly confined to Harbor. Going back to the Harbor always give me a chuckle, reading harbor gen chat. Yuck. Nowadays, the troll pop does appear to be growing, and spreading out to at least the market and House K. Amrath seems to be pretty safe Your best defense is your squelch feature, and your friends list.

agree it has gotten worse. Had someone on tempest spine deliberately run around pulling the fire ellies while we were waiting for group the other day (was told verbally and written down to stop)..we all took off and someone had to go back for stragglers (who were new to quest). We had to reform in the end as this "troll' found other ways to grief the group...deliberately.

OH and btw love the 'great job' about dev's and ddo. Too many ppl criticise but they should know the silent majority love what they do and know they work really hard to produce a fantastic product. :-)

I think the party leader should have the ability to start a *vote* to kick someone out of a party. Can this still be abused? Of course it can, but really almost *anything* can be "abused" in some way or another. I think a system like this was stop a lot more issues however than it starts. And at least with a system like this, it takes an entire *group* to kick someone out for whatever reason(s) they wanted to, instead of just the wishes of one.

There are many solutions, none of them work all the time. They tend to boil down to these three:
    1. Change player associations. The whitelist solution. Guilds and friend lists.
    2. Be prepared to /squeltch liberally. The blacklist solution. /squeltch and sometimes "friend lists"
    3. Don't zerg your advertisement. The complex solution.

For the complex solution try limiting gamer slang use, and instead go with complete sentences and full words. Asking them to send a tell for invite can be a decent filter, as anyone that just clicks has not read the /lfm.

No. It is abused in every game it is in. It is among the reasons I only play DDO. Also, thankfully, the devs have said this will never be a part of DDO again.

I would sign a measure taken against those people that afk at the start of a quest with points where the entire team has to be together, like diplomatic impunity or the snitch. It's highly annoying that you are dependant of someone who is not there, there also is no way to contact them if they are AFK and some people actually use this to troll a group, on my server a specific guild would do things like this.
