Angry DDO BSOD my computer an avg of 3 time/hr..consitently

SO as the title mentions, these BSOD only happen while playing DDO. I also play BF3 and have zero problems there. Basically I've narrowed it down to something in the game crashing the video drivers, or SB Xifi card. (this has been reported elsewhere on the forums here http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=179426 and here: http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=273589.

I ran a full night worth of Memtest (16 hours) and zero errors. Temps are all well below anything's high points (CPU and GPU's don't ever get above 66c). Here's my dxdiag. I'm replacing the 2 5870's I have with 2 7970's the beginning of next week, so if nothing comes of this until then, hopefully that might help. Thanks ahead to time for any help!

Also, yes, the drivers for the GPU's are from Dec of 2011, but those are by far the most stable crossfire drivers I have found (I've updated, then rolled-back due to issues with newer ones)

You did an actual rollback of your graphics drivers, or did you completely uninstall the new buggy drivers? I recently ran into a problem where I did a rollback instead of an uninstall of some bad new drivers, and elements of the buggy new drivers remained and caused problems. To fix things, I had to go into the control panel and uninstall every graphics driver version and do a clean install.

Are newer drivers available for your sound card?

Yeah, rollback was a loose term. I went into safe mode, uninstalled them, reboot back to safe mode, then used Driver sweeper to remove any trace, reboot back into safe mode, installed drivers. Everything installed fine, no failures, rebooted. (I actually did this with the SB card as well to make sure nothing in the install of that happened to be corrupted just in case.) The SB drivers were the most current as of yesterday.

I noticed that your page file is rather large. Is the entire page file on your G: solid state drive with your windows installation? DDO is memory-intensive enough that if a page file is configured oddly, DDO would probably find a way to cause problems. Do you find that you'll crash quicker if you change between characters often and travel a lot in the game so that you have plenty of zoning-in and load screens?

Did these crashes only start after DDO updated to Update 13, or were they happening before then?

In your computer's graphics properties, you can make sure that everything is set to application-controlled. Then go into the DDO graphics properties and turn off anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering. (Doing that has fixed some crash issues for people, including myself.)

I just checked, the page file is determined by windows (I've never messed with it or given custom settings). All the AA and AF are determined by the program in the Catalyst CC. Open up the game, AA is off and Texture Filtering (where the AF conrols is located is "Sharp"), so AF is off in game too.

It started just being anytime I tried to use an Air Ship portal, BSOD. This was before U13. After a bit, I did a fresh windows install (it's was time for one anyways) and then did a fresh download of DDO. It continued to happen only while entering AS portal, then the past few days SINCE U13, it's every 15-20min no matter what I was doing, where I am, just running around and suddenly BSOD.

I've gone as far to test all my components since I'm lucky to have a plethora of extra parts. Pulled th i7 950, installed i7 920, still BSOD. Exchanged memory with those I know work (on another gaming rig I have), BSOD. Swapped out PSU, BSOD. So that leaves the HHD's, video cards or sound card.

AS I mentioned I get new video cards on Tues, but have had these since early 2010 and no problems with DDO or any other game. I play a bunch of BF3, Diablo 3 beta, had sims 3, COD..All of which I never experience a BSOD. I also never run into blue screens when surfing or doing work..only when playing DDO.

    I'm stumped.

What ares the ages and wattages of the power supply units you've tried? What brand are they?

You could inspect the motherboard for bulging capacitors.

I'm stumped, too. My gut feeling is that there might be a bit of a power issue creeping up in your system, and that only the resource-intensive DDO is aggravating it at the moment.

Another theory is that perhaps there's a slight IRQ conflict somewhere. You could go into your Device Manager and disable some hardware that you obviously don't use. (In my case, I disable my dialup modem, unused network card, onboard sound card if I have a separate add-on sound card.)

Actually, could you type the exact message on your BSODs? I assume it's similar to the other threads you linked to, but I just wanted to make sure.

Dont forget to update your audio drivers. It can just as easily be from them as from the GPU. If you know you are having issues with unstable GPU drives, I would check to make sure your bridge drivers and BIOS are 100% current and up to date.

You might also try disabling certain DX11 features that are known/suspected to contribute to client side lag. Things like dynamic shadows and the detailed fog effects.

My DDO client has been crashing a number of times each session, since U13. I guess the previous bad memory leak has been made even worse!!

try going into the troubleshooting section of the DDO option menu and turn the game engine speed down low or very low. I was having the the same issue for a while and that seem to fix it for me. You could give it a try and see if it helps.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. To answer a few before I hit the likely culprit.

DDO is the least stressful game that I play. Battlefield 3 (Ultra at 2560x1600, this monitor not listed above as I was moving them around to get smaller res in case it was that fact) draw much more resources (GPU and CPU by comparing System Performance monitors). And I only BSOD playing DDO. I have never seen a BSOD doing/playing anything else (including benchmarking, prime95, memtest, etc.

With that said I use a relatively new (Bought Oct '11) Corsair 1050W PSU. I also received one of the two HD 7970's Saturday (love Amazon shipping!) and I wiped the old drivers clean (safe mode with driver sweeper, install new drivers with obligatory reboots) with the latest and newest drivers directly from the card manufacturer. NO change..about 25 min into it playing, BSOD. Same error message as the ones listed in the second link in my original post.

So I dug up a relatively old(er) ASUS Xonar Essence STX sound card I have. Removed the SB X-Fi and installed the ASUS one. Bam. NO blue screen after 3 hours or so of playing. So just to be sure, reinstalled X-fi one, then after 20 min just fiddling around in game, bam, BSOD. So I just disabled the X-fi card and initialized the on-board Azalea codec for Audio and have been using on-board audio for most the day (Asus card 'given' [taken] for the GF comp)..NO problems. Final conclusion:

DDO does indeed have major issues with Sound Blaster X-Fi Sound Cards. SO beware of your in the market for one. I'm sure there are people who don't have problems but mine were solved without using it (which is disappointing to buy a card that you can only use in rare cases). I hope someday someone at Turbine looks into this, but I know they are way too busy doing "other" things.

Once again thanks for all the help/suggestions everyone!

Just an FYI, a driver causing a BSOD is typically the fault of the driver and not DDO, DDO just uses the card in a way that is different enough than the other games to cause this crash. I am absolutely sure they are using the DirectX API for all audio. This is probably something you should report as a bug to Sound Blaster.

PS I guess Turbine could investigate it and try to work around the Sound Blaster bug.

Already submitted one with them (Creative), but I figure it's probably unlikely they will do much just for one game. But who knows. I'm just hoping we might get a note here on the known issues list as they do with some of the older GPU's and hardware that has compatibility issues. Not going to hold my breath.

I'm just pleased at the number of people who jumped to help. On other forums, you just get people trolling and little to no help.

It actually relates to how (Creative's) OpenAL, X-Fi cards and Win7/Vista handle hardware based audio.

Creative Support recently released 'beta' versions of the X-Fi drivers specifically designed to address blue screen crashes on Vista/Win7 when applications use a customized version of their OpenAL audio libraries (such as DDO/LOTRO). Now that said though the drivers are beta and still might not be available for your specific model but it still might help to check.

In the interim I'd go into the game (with the X-Fi card enabled) and under Options > Audio put the "Sound Playback" on "Software on Speakers (Creative SB X-Fi)" and disable "Use EAX" if that's active. This might not eliminate the crash but should reduce it significantly.

This interesting information might be good to paste into one of the sticky threads, as I can foresee myself needing to reference this information in a future thread in here, but then being unable to find it.

I have REALLY REALLY grown to abhore creative bs.

Seriously, in this day and age, their driver is 50 megs, and is running at 14.4k modem speeds to download.

Well this explains a lot. I've been experiencing occasional BSODs as well. Not nearly as often as the OP, and I've found they are generally avoidable if I restart my client after a couple hours of gaming or swapping characters more than a few times and running any content. But it's much more common than it was prior to U13. I figured it was just due to the infamous client memory leak, but perhaps my X-Fi card deserves the lion's share of the blame. Will have to try out those beta drivers.

Thanks Mirth, I already have the beta drivers, but will change the EAX setting. It kinda sucks that we have to use software settings for sound when we spend so much money to use hardware..but what are you gonna do...
