Unhappy ****-near Impossible Build (for me)

    Hey guys,
I have a real challenge for you if you choose to accept it. I know this will not be an optimal build. This is mostly for fun and to allow my wife to play with me and not die so much. And if (when) she does die, I can resurrect her. I really want to try FvS so I am hoping that is what I can use for the healing/buffing. I'm starting at Veteran lvl 7 so those levels don't really matter for gameplay. I personally enjoy disarming traps and finding hidden doors, so try and work those skills in there too. I usually take Battle Engineer for the Endless Fusillade. I have 32pt builds, all classes and races, all tomes can be acquired (+1 thru +4), already have most runearms and some great repeaters, so pretty much no limitations except the following requirements:

REQUIREMENTS: Warforged, Artificer, Flame Turret (unless FvS has something that works similarly by Vet lvl 7 or 8), Repeating Heavy Crossbow + RuneArm, Good Trapping, And finally: Be able to buff, heal, and res my wife(prefer FvS)

This is seriously hurting my head. I have a new found respect for you guys/gals who know this stuff. I decided to go with the Arti stuff first since that is how I like to play. I took an early level of FvS to get the spell point boost but I have researched so much I am completely confused now. I think if I take Quicken early on I wont have to waste points on Concentration. Is that right? And can't I use res scrolls earlier than when I actually get the spell from FvS? Help. Here is all I could come up with (and I think this is broken as hell cause I don't know FvS at all). Should I keep going artificer feats & enhancments or FvS? That is what is confusing me I think. Any guidance is much appreciated.

I think you're discounting your ability to UMD scrolls and wands a bit. A pure artificer can handle the raising, buffing, etc. You might consider straight-up that.

Or consider Half-Elf since it can sometimes take time to get UMD up high enough. I know that goes against the Warforged requirement, but just throwing that out there.

I tried that on another failed build. but for some reason i was always failing at casting the spells from scrolls. Too high a fail percentage i guess.

It sounds like you want a ranged survivalist that can use dots. One of the best builds you may find for this is an 18 fvs/2 monk half elf with the Elven arcane archer line.
You will will have great use of bows, a full line of healing, high saves with evasion along with Divine Punishment and Blade Barriers, as well as your laser (archon) It is a tight build on feats but with gear can solo most epics. I'm on vacation right now and didn't bring my laptop. If someone could find and post the build that would be great, if not I'll get it to you tomorrow.

Oh, I understand...I just got done doing Invaders! a few times on my WF Monk...I just cackled the whole time ignoring those horrifying Negative Levels that are so debilitating on my fleshies.

But your UMD WILL get high enough eventually (as pure/mostly Arti), if you can suffer through it for awhile, and maybe track down a few specific pieces of gear.

In your build you're getting raise as a blue-bar spell around what ... 18th level?

At 13th level an arti will have a UMD of ...

    Ranks = 16
    CHA bonus = assume a 6 base with a +6 item = +1
Improved Use Magic Device enhancement points = +2 (2 levels of this are fairly AP light)
UMD + 3 item (Cartouche, crafted item with Persuasion) = +3
Arti Skill Mastery granted feat = +1
Scroll Mastery (granted class feature) = +5
    Drink a heroism pot = +2

    That's a 31. No fail on a Raise Dead is 35.

This example is at 13th level; I'm assuming a base CHA, no CHA tome, no luck bonus (Voice of the Master / Prayer / Head of Good Fortune) and no using a GH scroll first (another +2) or any temporary skill boost / action boost usages.

By the time you're 18-ish (when your hybrid can cast it from a blue bar) you'll be no-failing those scrolls easily.

At 9th, you certainly would not be no-fail but could carry a stack and just keep trying.

    (1) Have you invested in concentration? IF you're trying to scroll-raise and you're getting hit, you'll be taking concentration checks.

    (2) Are you using Adamantine Body or other feats? You don't need to - but if you decide you want to, they will interfere w/ Spellcasting.

Thanks for all the quick responses.

Ok. So obviously I was not doing UMD correctly on my other build. It seems true artificer is the way to go. I'm currently searching for a straight-up arti (or possibly a splash of monk for evasion seems popular). Will losing the capstone make that much of a difference compared to the evasion and the fact that I want to be a little bit of a trap-monkey? Or, if someone knows of a build that seems relevant I'd appreciate the link and it may keep you from having to repeat well-known information. I will keep looking, but instant gratification is always appreciated! haha

Edit: forgot to answer you voodoo
    1) original build I did invest in concentration. That is why i asked about Quicken in OP.
    2) I never used any of those armor upgrades. I figured if they made it all the way to me through all those bolts, i deserved to be hit.

    Default WF Artie

If you are looking for an Artie that can self heal, while casting heal scrolls and rezzing everyone, you should probably go WF Artie 18/ 2 Rogue.

    Str-8,Dex-17,Con-16,Int-18,Wis-6,Con-6

Feats: Toughness, Augment Summoning, Empower, IC:Ranged, Improved Precise Shot, Maximize, Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot, Quicken, Rapid Reload, Rapid Shot.

You'll have Blade Barrier, Fire Turrent, Evasion, a Great Pet, Be able to Reconstruct WF and pets as well as around a 42 UMD for Rez and Heal Scrolls. Your DPS with your XBows and Rune Arm will be pretty good too...HP around 430 with gear and Spell Points around 1500.

You will also have enough Search, Disable, Spot and Open to do any Epic Stuff....

Thanks for all the great links and suggestions.

    battlehawke:
I have another WF that I went 1fighter/2 monk/7arti so far(she's level 10). It was a build I ran across when I first started playing and so far, rocks pretty good. What would be the benefit of going rogue over my monk classes and why did my build even need a level of fighter? I never did understand that. Just for the extra feat?

I think i may ultimately go pure Artificer on my new build. According to what I've read so far, it seems that keeping the capstone makes a big difference at endgame. I've learned a lot about what feats seem to be universally the best to go with, so I may throw together another build and have you experts tell me if I'm on the right track.

    Default artie

    Hey.

I really like my pure WF Artie. I regret sometimes not having evasion. Other than that he is pretty freaking awesome.

2 levels of rogue get you 3 points of skill level (that only a rogue could get) in all skills taken if at level one with rogue and evasion of course. 2 levels of monk get you two feats with evasion. Take a look at the build and see which you need the most and go from there. I found that I had enough feats with the Artie bonus feats .

So with rogue your search, spot, disable, UMD and open will be 3 points higher than any other class if rogue is taken at level one. Two feats are hard to pass up though..

IF you'll play a lot DUO and you need to handle buffing you might consider also staying pure as the capstone will allow you to treat any clicky as it was lvl 20 so, for example:

Goggle of time sensing = 3x 2minutes haste
Ring of rage, brawn spirit = 3 minutes rage
Planar gird = 20 minutes GH

Either if you decide to go pure or splash for evasion i would strongly consider insightfull reflexes as your final INT will be significantly higher than DEX.

I know this started as a FvS build so forgive me for posting this here. I just thought it would be better to keep the conversation in one thread. Someone let me know if I should move/delete it.

Here's what I came up with so far. One problem though. According to the planner, I should have had 28 enhancement points by level 7 (4x7lvls). However, I got bored last night and decided to go ahead and roll this up to level seven and just goof around while I waited on your much better suggestions. At any rate, when actually in game, I only had 24 points to spend at the trainer. I ditched all the open lock, spot, search kinda stuff so that I could get the other/better enhancements. My question is why the discrepancy? Now I'm short 4 enhancements.

I know most ppl wouldn't go quicken this early but being new and inexperienced I really like it. Insightful reflexes is missing also. Any thoughts (Especially on Spell Selection)?

And thanks rimble for the suggestion of putting Persuasion on my rune arm. That sounds pretty good to me.

At any rate, when actually in game, I only had 24 points to spend at the trainer. I ditched all the open lock, spot, search kinda stuff so that I could get the other/better enhancements. My question is why the discrepancy? Now I'm short 4 enhancements.
At the start of 1st level a 1st level character has 0 enhancements
At the end of 1st level a 1st level character has 4 enhancements

At the start of 2nd level a 1st level character has 4 enhancements
At the end of 2nd level a 1st level character has 8 enhancements

At the start of 3rd level a 1st level character has 8 enhancements
At the end of 3rd level a 1st level character has 12 enhancements

    follow that path down to.....

At the start of 7th level a 1st level character has 24 enhancements
At the end of 7th level a 1st level character has 28 enhancements

I'm home for a short while then off to work. I think You will like this build (the pure WF Artie) very much. It's very similar to mine. You can UMD teleport, heal, reconstruct and rez as well as many other fun scrolls. You will have decent HP.

Get a Lightning II Heavy Repeater ASAP as well as a +45 HP Shroud Item.

Use Body Pulls, Don't shoot into mobs. Get close when one sees you pull away and shoot it when it is away from its friends otherwise you get him and all of his friends.

    Have Fun....

Two feats are hard to pass up though..

being int based the skill points you get from rogue levels is unimportant you will be able to max skills anyway.

2 monk levels gives you 2 toughness feats and the ability to put on handwraps and use water stance for traps and such

Thanks for all the awesome input. i have decided to go with the last arti I posted and also to keep going with my other arti that has splash 2 monk. I'll update ya with which one turns out my favorite.

    Thanks again for the help.

Edit: Dendrix your explanation makes sense to me. However my problem is that the planner led me down the wrong path. I guess now that I know I can adjust for that. i was just surprised with how polished and well used the planner is that no one has never noticed or corrected this. It's still an awesome piece of freeware so thanks rjcyberware.com!!!
