Aaaah Thac0, negative AC, Non-weapon proficiencies, Weapon proficiencies, strict rules on race/class combos.. How amazingly uber the 'kits' from the Complete 'Something' Handbook series felt compared to vanilla classes and of course the shiver down the spines when I opened the big fat Monstrous Compendium binders .. I love the smell of polyhedral dice in the morning......

Anybody try to have an ol fashioned game like that in DDO? I know most have given up the slow casual playstyle.
Heck, DDO doesn't even have a "Walk" mode unless you hold down a key! Running seems to be the way of things now.

We have sat round the guild airship using /roll and played 2nd ed in party and guild chat quite fun as you can use /tell for secrets instead of having to pass notes in front of the whole party lol

It would be cool if we could play Pnp in game. You have your avatars in party and determine who's DM. Characters could be separated from regular PVE game characters. The DM gets a special tool with dice options, monster options & such. You could be in either travel mode or combat mode. In combat mode, only the people who's turn it is can do anything, limited by movement rate & actions per core rules. The DM can use existing maps and place monsters there and such. Map creation would be nice though. That way, you really could play Dungeons and Dragons - online.

Two game modes - DDO as we all know it and love it & PNP style.

    One could dream, right?

The DM would read it and sigh, give me the LOOK, and then let the ride start. "Because SOMEONE threw a rock at the ogre", and hit him in the head, "he looks straight at the group and comes charging... everyone roll initiative!" I really do miss those days. Friends and family have described me as chaotic/chaotic, sometimes misinterpreted as EVIL, only with less death and more pain.

I said less death not none.

Yep, I've wondered what it would be like if four of us did a DDO Dungeon Crawl with voice-chat and NOT running.
Act like you've never did the quest before and whisper to each other while creeping along.

DDO seems to be the death of tabletop because you don't HAVE to go slow. Heck, you don't even have to talk to each other! Remember when it took ALL DAY to explore just a few levels? Now you can do the same in 15 minutes!

You would think that DDOs fluid animation and total automation would be great for tabletoppers, who could concentrate on coordinating and trying to talk in comical accents!

Default Music (grunt) to my ears

    Well met,
Nice to hear that some of us are left. Been playing DDO about 6 months and wish i'd have started years ago or maybe not. Its like being charmed, i keep playing and have thoughts about my old life, well i hope i fail the saving throw many more times. I've played 2nd ed (allways been DM) for 20years but the last 5 years played very little and then, only with my daughter and her friends(14-18yr old) . I have a monster manual and old dungeon mags in the toilet! They enjoy it and want to play more but they have no time and far too many distractions. Something i've learned , the attraction of going up levels, i could never understand the ' quick come on work the experience points out' now i know it was a futile attempt on their part hoping they would find the next villian easy to beat ha ha ha. Now i feel the same and am heartbroken when everything gets harder to detect and kill. I find myself doing quests far below my level sneaking about taking an hour or more when i could probably do it in minutes. I miss roleplaying, if your having fun why roll dice. Without i doubt the best quest i (we) did was scourge of the slavelords(relocated to FR). The look on their faces being captured 'you'll have to wait till next week now adventures' . Next week finding themselves strapped to oars on the slave galley (the wizard was horrified having been fitted with something akin to a gimp mask). It was hard on the players more times than one. Thats when they escaped they found a rather wonderful magic ring(from a dungeon mag article) that was powerful? but costly to their pocket. The ring saved them (at the last minute after being fed) [anyone know what ring i mean?], a few times. The word Mithral was never spoken in earshot of the ring.
So yes i would love to play some proper DnD. My character i use the most is Runikz on thelanis server.
    I shall return .

Hmmm....seems like there are Kindred Souls out there afterall.
First step (I would think) is to meet. Might I suggest the Wayward Lobster?
This week I have quite a bit of free time Mon-Weds. As I am East Coast USA (-5GMT),
I can be found at the Inn from 6-10pm EST. If you're around and interested, stop by and get aquainted.
I realize this is quite late for anyone in the UK. Sorry.

We can sit around the table with a pint or two and party up to use voice-chat and discuss future adventuring.
Look for Ezeikiel, a middle-age Human Male.

Don't forget the year we would age every time haste was cast on you. Imagine the griefing we could do in this game if that rule carried over. Kill someone from old age before the quest was even half way done.

We are perm hasted. Why walk.

    --------------

I like 2nd ed. Loved the dual classing human could do. Didn't care much for demi-human type of classes with their split if you wanted a multi classed type of character.

/sing Pingkie you got too stand up tall....

Umm I mean, yeah. Like Koshy said, there is roleplay going on. I am ambassador of one of the bigger RP guild on the server. We mostly do on our forums, or sitting in the Phoenix between adventures RP, rather than running quests just because of time issues and one short quest can take longer than most people have to RP out. Come by the Phoenix some time, look for Nklos, or anyone of the Fellowship of the Golden Night.

We are also organizing an online second ed game, so there are things out there...

What type of player are you????
Roleplayer---The story is the focus. You spend hours refining and developing a background for your character. You will spend 50-75% of your time online in chat sessions acting out your characters lives, and actually playing the game with that character.

Computer Gamer---The Game is the focus. You spend almost all of your time doing quests or activities with progression in mind. Find the perfect combination of items, stats, etc that propel you to the top of your league.

Either end of the spectrum described above is cool. We all play games for different reasons.

What I wonder is.....can DDO be used to bring back the fun of talking to each other and (most important) ROLEPLAY the GAME.

    If you care to....try this.....
Create a new character.....make it a Fighter. First take some dice. (remember those?) roll your six stats like you used to (3d6). Any stat below 8, make it an 8. Arrange the six numbers however you like.

In your character creation, make the stats match the ones you rolled. Now divide the repaining DDO points by six and apply evenly to stats that still have a point cost of 1, with any odd remainders applied to non-primary stat.
You'll end up with (on average) Primary Stat above average and 1 other stat below average.

With Skill points, choose Intimidate (duh, fighter?) and Move Silently (helps counter Armor Check Penalty).

I tried this a few times and with very few exceptions, came up with what I would have done normally in DDO, But now I've used the original method from D&D, except DDO won't let me NOT use all the build points.
Note: I do not use the 32 point build.

Now bypass the Korthos Storyline and do a couple of 1st level quests (Heyton's Rest) a few times on Normal.
Each time, sell EVERYTHING that is magic or a potion. When you've gained about 200PP to represent starting money from D&D basic rules and go to the Hammer and Chain in the Harbor and buy yourself a Full Plate Armor!
Now you should have at least 1 Sword, Mace, Shield and a Full Plate Armor that everyone who played PnP bought when they started.

    While you were doing Heyton's.....
Do not run unless in Combat. Move in Sneak (which I will call Creep)
Do not use any Magic Item.(unless entitled to by Level, see below)
    Do not use any Potion.
    Do not use the Shrine.
If you run low on Hit Points.....retreat to the entrance and exit, wait to regain your points and re-enter.
If you can not get away and end up dying...recall and re-enter.
After each Module (Quest) sell everything except Normal Weapons.
Do not keep anything Magic or any potion between Modules.
With each 1 level gained after the first, you can keep/use a +1 item. (at 2nd level you can keep a +1 item, at 3rd you can exchange it for a +2 item or add another +1 item you have found)

Enjoy the challenge! You're playing a decent version of PnP D&D. (IMHO)
Now imaging playing alongside a Cleric, Wizard and a Thief! All with voice-chat.
Now characters will depend on each other and you will not be playing a game, you'll be role-playing a game.

I realize there may be those who disagree, but it's my oppinion. Hopefully, not everyone will disagree.

Tonight at 8pm EST, a Character called Shelani will be in the Harbor, getting a 4-person group together to attempt the Butcher's Run in this style.
All must be 1st Level, no potions, No Magic Items and voice chat active.
This character is a Fighter, so a Cleric would be good.

You should make this post or one simular into a new thread. I think it will be mostly buried this way. If you do that you should get more responses and hopefully more to take advantage and play with you this evening. I love the idea but work will be in the way for me.

Also you should check up on Perma death guilds and play styles. I perma death solo chars when I get bored. It's fun to see how long they will last. The excitement level is for sure amped up. And if you role play them as well it adds some fun drama with others.

    Good luck tonight!
