    Default Let's talk: Tarhooties

OK I spent the last couple days in my public library searching and scowering for 'Tarhootie'. This exhaustive search proved fruitless and with no result.

However, I was able to discover references by walking through a Mall and randomly asking people of all ages and sizes. I got 2 references:
    1. A small marsupial related to the kangaroo which reaches 10 centimeters in height in adulthood. It ranges along the edges of desserts and can be found in scrub and sparsely forested regions
    2. On the island of 'Vanuatu' this is the name of the shadow that appears on the edge of your vision but when you turn to see what it was, there is nothing there.

It's an expression from the semi-deep South.
I'm sure one would find similarly amusing descriptions of what a Tarhootie is from some old timers.

I figured it was just something out of original Loony Toons probably from Sam.

I just looked it up in the urban dictionary and it says a "A country-@$$ person from Texas" and similar stuff.
When I was growing up, we never called anyone a Tarhooty, we just used it instead of cuss words wherever it fit, because it sounded funny, and usually made us laugh hysterically for a few minutes....

Being from the semi-deep South, I have never used nor heard that word in 42+ years.

Or in the immortal words of one of our most revered philosophers:

"Naw, man. Hell naw. I reckon you'd get your a** kicked for saying something like that around here."

I thought Tarhooties were the native people of Tarnation...

My Dad always used to say, "What in Tarnation is going on here?"

Maybe someday I will visit there.

Louisiana had such a French influence, and Texas I've always considered Western, not Southern. So I'd think if you were going to hear it, it would have been Texas.
Me.. 20 odd years been Arkansas and Missouri. I've never heard anyone use it, even by oldtimers at boy scout camps.

I think of Texas as like Vatican City. It's within Italy, but it's technically its own country.

There are a few differences though:

    1. Texas is helluva love bigger than VC.
    2. There's prolly more Catholics in VC than in the entire state.
    3. The Pope wouldn't need his bubble car in Texas. He'd just pack a bigger gun than any would-be assassin.

I believe tarhooties refers to a DDO Lottery available today to assist those lost in the middle of nowhere.

    That is a common misconception.

Many of the early visitors of Tarnation would see Tarhooties in Tarnation. As word spread, this led to the belief that Tarhooties originated from Tarnation.

Today, historians believe that Tarhooties tended to congregate in Tarnation because of its proximity to Tarhooties lands and because of the obvious draws that Tarnation would have for Tarhooties. However, it is generally accepted now that not a single Tarhootan was native to Tarnation.

Of course this leaves us with the dilemma that we still can't place the native land of the Tarhooties. There are various mixed beliefs. But none of them are generally acceptable or backed up by any credible evidence.

Chauncey1 needs a title, since this is all his fault.
