Thumbs down Speak english your in a english country!!

Went out the other night and outside a bar in town, hamilton new zealand was with the samoan boys and we are all speaking in samoan then some guy comes up to us and tells us that we are in a english country and should speak english. ***!!!???

He pretty much had a death wish for himself and his mates, I had to hold my friends back then some, NZ maori's, asians and other pacific islanders heard why he was causing trouble and he finally wised up and took off with his tail between his legs. Good thing too because I didnt want to spend the night in the cells or be faced with assualt charges. He was all tough when it was 6 of them and 3 of us but when the numbers started to even out and even go against him he started threating people with the law. What kind of ***** tries to start a fight then threatens people with legal action?

But back to being an *english* country what a load of ****, our national anthem is sung in two langauges english and nz maori. If I was speaking in maori with my maori friends would he have had a problem? If hes refering to our colonial heritage quite a few of the people who settled here from britain didnt come from england, quite a few came from ireland/scotland and wales, what if we where speaking gaelic eh? Anyway its a free country and anyone can speak whatever the hell language they want. Even clingon or lord of the rings elvish or whatever nerd speak.

Seriously tho, speak whatever the hell you want. However, don't expect it to endear yourself to your monolingual compatriots, especially at work.

Interesting I noticed a lot of the *american* players often speak spanish to each other? I think thats kind of cool, I even find that quite a few don't even have any hispanic heritage.

I like people speaking in different languages it makes the place more interesting.

Ha reminds me of when i was in NZ and some big Aussie guy got wind of my accent and started to try and grief me (i'm English btw). He started on about cricket which i couldn't care less about so i just replied that i was surprised he was so enthusiastic as only girls play that back home.

Next thing i know i'm up against the wall thinking the comment was worth a broken jaw when a man mountain of a Maori stepped in and decided that this guy needed a lesson in hospitality.

Turned to me and said i could run along then went back to the Aussie who was now making peace with his god.

Far as i'm concerned you can speak whatever language you like

    This is ridiculous.

Did you know that over 50% of all Americans actually speak more than one language?

My second language is Spanish and my wife's is French. Our neighbors speak English and Russian.

This myth that Americans only speak one language is stupid.

There are situations that someone may feel excluded because he can not understand what is happening in a conversation but in my experience those violent reactions are a reflection of LOW SELF ESTEEM and other personality problems.

I will leave it there because language is a problem for some people. Is better to let hem vent out and read their arguments.

    Sooo true. lol.

I made a big deal on Facebook recently about how people who come to a new country need to learn to speak the native language of that country.

People coming to America can start by learning to speak Mohican!

I can't tell if you're being facetious or simply an ignoramus. God help those poor students to whom you "teach" English.

Speak English. You're in an English forum.

hehe, I was going to poke fun at the OP for the thread title as well. Since you already did it,
    don't you mean:
"Speak English," or "Speak English! You're in an English speaking country."?

    I think thatz more betterish!

To the OP though. Yeah, people like that annoy me as well. If it were supposed to be that way, all Brits
would be speaking Gaelic (or something earlier). All Aussies would be speaking Aborigine. All Americans would
be speaking whatever the language of the natives were in their area. Etc, etc, etc.
