I get a Word of the Day email to keeps my brains learned and yesterday the word was Wellerism. I love plays on words and puns so this was a great email to revitalize one of my old past times. Seeing as how another one of my old past times, DDO, just recently came back into my life I thought it would be fun to try to incorporate a little bit of the two together to see what I could come up with.
First, lets start with the Wikipedia page description of a Wellerism to edumacate those of you who don't know what I am referring to...
Wellerism: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wellerisms, named after Sam Weller in Charles ****ens's The Pickwick Papers, make fun of established clichés and proverbs by showing that they are wrong in certain situations, often when taken literally. In this sense, wellerisms that include proverbs are a type of anti-proverb. Typically a Wellerism consists of three parts: a proverb or saying, a speaker, and an often humorously literal explanation.
Second, here are some examples that are listed on wiki's page too...
"Everyone to his own taste," the old woman said when she kissed her cow.
"We'll have to rehearse that," said the undertaker as the coffin fell out of the car.
A body can get used to anything, even to being hanged, as the Irishman said.
"This week is beginning splendidly," said one who was to be hanged on Monday.
"Much noise and little wool," said the Devil when he sheared a pig.
"So I see," said the blind carpenter as he picked up his hammer and saw.
"Simply remarkable," said the teacher when asked her opinion about the new dry-erase board.
Ok, so we got the introductions out of the way, let's move on to my first (and only) DDO Wellerism that I came up with...
Zentraal the cleric, upon hearing the news of his friend Wiggins the sorcerer moving into his new apartment above the Wayward Lobster, asked “Aren’t you worried about living down the hall from Fitzpat?" To which Wiggins replied, “Good fences make good neighbors”.
Yeah, I know... its lame... but so am I. I was just interested in seeing if anyone else could come up with some good ones to match me. So without any further delays, please let the DDO word fun begin!
