Driver Display NVIDIA...

Hey all,

Started getting the following error message about 7 or 8 months ago. Used to be infrequent, but now is making the game unplayable:

"Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernal Mode Driver, version 285.62 stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

What works:

If I unplug my laptop I can run the game with no problems.

What has not worked:

The last three NVIDIA drivers
Disabling 3D
Running in DX9 instead of DX10
Changing Power Options
both general and did advanced settings last night(1.30.12)
Running the program with no other programs running
Different power outlet
Different AC Adaptor
Running the program with no other devices(e.g external fan, head phones, etc.)
A thorough air cleaning (1.30.12)

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Short answer - It's a Windows issue and it's HARD to fix. As far as I know there is nothing Turbine can do about it.

Thanks for the link. Definitely not something I would expect Turbine to be able to fix. It is my rig for sure. Just throwing it out to the community for any ideas.

Due to the game running solid when I am on battery I am thinking that may PSU may be going out on me. That is listed as a cause of this in the link you posted.

Make sense? Problem is I dont know how to verify the PSU is faulty, if there is a method.

Had the same issue, and it was the PSU. In my case ( using a blasted dell with proprietary PSUs) a good cleaning with an air can fixed er right up , no issue since. SAved me lots of cash too. I know it will eventually fail but Ive bought some time

PC Power and Cooling makes PSUs for those pesky dells.

Let me relate an issue I had with my Alienware, maybe it will help.

I had an issue with the laptop computer crashing while plugged in but not while unplugged (Alienwre MLAX). I got a new PSU from Alienware tech support, and it still happened. I sent the rig in and the end result was a bad Mobo circut failing to run the CPU under full power. Basically, the board failed when it attempted to wind the CPU up to full strength while under AC power. It ran fine on battery power, because it would switch into a lower mode.

I cant recall, but I think it also failed if I manually instructed the OS to run under full power while on battery. Of course, it had dual graphics cards, so it only ran for 45 min before running out of juice.

Thanks Winded and Azgreentea. Going to go for the thorough blow job first and hope for the best. I'll post tonight after Ive tried that out.

A thorough blow job could cost you more than the PSU, but I guess it depends on what part of town you go to.

Aye, but i bet I won't be as frustrated as playing this game with my rig in this condition.

The only way you could do anything of the sort would be to watch the power, both current and voltage (current normally being more difficult) and record fluctuations.

Chances are darn good you don't have the spare oscilliscope that could track it for long periods let alone access to fast ICs to watch for issues and record off data over a long time period for a home brew method.

The cool thing now is I can repeat it consistently. Run game on battery power, plug in cord, within 5 seconds game will crash.

That is exactly what I had with my laptop. Well, except it wasnt just in game, it was anytime I plugged it in.

Which if you aren't careful you could do in this situation. The 5 and 12 volts you are working this doesn't worry me, but those several amps does.

Mith did make a good point about your hardware profiles for handling when the laptop is plugged in vs. battery.
You have faulty hardware from all sounds, and probably it is within the laptop itself and not your external PSU.
You could probably make changes to your "constant power" profile to closer match your "battery life" profile (I'm making up names there) Such that you could continue limping along until it dies utterly.

I'm sorry I missed your question, Cold, and yes I was.

However, great to hear you are back up and running!

Or you could just use a logging multimeter which you may be able to borrow from someone you know. Almost any multimeter can measure the current draw that a laptop would require.

WARNING - If you don't know what you're doing with a multimeter and you're trying to measure current you could damage the meter.
