Early Preview : Cosmetic Pets (Pictures)

Maybe the pets will help us on quests sometimes even though they're not supposed to.

Upon reading this I had the disturbing thought of these pets blocking mob pathing and being used as virtual shields by players in quests. Now that would be a funny one "Hey guys get your wolf pet out and use them to block the door".

Also, I agree with a previous poster as well as this is a chance for the Dev's to stretch their programming know how... And don't for a second think this is lost on them.

Exactly. People are saying "lets see better". What people tend to forget a lot of the time is how DDO models work. They aren't simple wireframes with a mesh, they are fully animated figures. (unless during one of the engine changes they changed this) Because of this, putting in new emotes, let alone races, and creatures takes a long time and a lot of money.

It has been stated many a time that these new models take the longest of any update budget to do let alone they are also the most costly.

So due to time constraints my guess is that they are using what they have on hand now. Wolves and cats, (that spider may have been a model that just never got used.) and letting Developers (animators are not developers per title.) do their bit now getting everything setup for the eventual release of even more critters.

I think most lost interest when they found out they were cosmetic only. When we get actual worthwhile pets, then we'll talk.

Artificer Iron Defender pets still are not worthwhile pets. I'd not hold your breath

Never understood why Turbine did not access the 'pet market'. It's a HUGE section of sales for other MMOs that are on the same pay scheme. Rideable pets anyone? A rideable horse? A rideable Lion? Pegasus? DRAGON?! Dollar signs should be going up in the eyes of the marketing department...but I guess they just don't get it.

I'm pretty certain they get it. It was just a single, high up manager, back when the game was being developed that didn't.

I'm all for new models! Better then the standard of adding a new color scheme and dropping a new name for the otherwise almost exactly the same appearance. (reavers/renders)

I want one for my warforged so I can run around the harbor shouting Get it off me! Get it off me!!!!

One of the first things I did with Roderic's Wand was summon a giant spider in the Harbor, and run around screaming (back when it worked in public areas). Of course, this was months after that first cropped up and about 2 weeks before they fixed it, so I'm sure it'd been done to death already, but it amused me, and that's what was important.

I believe the general consensus of the player base here is we do *not* want mounts. They are not necessary - we don't reside in a ridiculously large world map, so there's no need for that kind of travel.

If anything, I'd like to see them cash in a little bit more with airships - buffs are cool, but minigames or some kind of activities (hell even more decoration) would give them much more function and flare.

Now give us a miniature boxing ring that can be slotted on a large hookpoint on the guildships.

Then let us fight our pets to the death, like miniature gladiators.

Edit: also, I agree with J1NG: we should be able to have miniature succubi dance for us

I hope you believe wrong. I will put a vote in for mounts, pets and housing. They add so much flavor to an mmo. There are people that like that kind of thing.
