    Default Game minimizes, any ideas?

Every so often when playing, DDO randomly will minimize on me. When I go to maximize it again, the screen turns black and it starts shifting rapidly back and forth between a black screen (DDO), and my desktop.

The only way I've found to fix it so far is to restart my client. I'm tired of this happening in the middle of a quest, and I want it to stop. Any thoughts on what might be causing it, or how to fix it?

I use Windows 7 on a computer that's more than capable of running DDO.

Almost certainly some other program is stealing focus. I'd look at antivirus first, if you have a $#@% one like Norton. Look at what's active in your system tray.

I have AdAware, Norton is terrible. Pretty sure it's not that, since it scans when i'm not playing.

It's not DDO that is causing the issue, it's an external program that (as said already) is stealing focus.

Any program that has a notification can do this, virus scanner, email, instant messenger, updates to a program, firewall etc.

You need to determine what programs you have running in the background and disable them one by one to find the culprit.

Edit - A _possible_ workaround may be to run DDO in windowed mode.

Now that I run the game in windowed mode I can see the problem is my graphics cards crashing and restarting...

After having the game do this 5 times in an hour I decided to see what I could do.

I've looked around on the forums here and it looks like many other people have the same issue. It also looks like the issue has been around for a long time without a fix. Thoughts on what I could do? The whole "revert to DX9 and still not have the problem fixed, but be able to play for a little longer" doesn't appeal to me.

Is there any way I can fix this for good? I'm getting really tired of this happening in the middle of questing, resulting in deaths or lost loot...

Actually, I had this problem a lot when I first started playing because I was playing fullscreen.

If you hit some command, not helpful I understand, and make it a window I find the problem goes away. Might be different for you though.

    1. Yes it's a legitimate version of Windows.

    2. I play windowed mode now. But it doesn't make a difference, it does it regardless of whether I play windowed or full screen.

I guess you already read this:

"Known Issue: Black Screen With Visible UI: Some Intel users may find that when DirectX 10 is enabled, only their UI is visible and the rest of their screen is black. If this occurs, we recommend you disable DX10, enable DX9, and restart the game client. "

Also, did you update your video card driver?

Has nothing to do with it.
DefunctEquation would it be an nvlddmkm error?

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?s...=nvlddmkm&st=0 has the answers you're looking for as to why it's happening.

Short answer - It's a Windows issue and it's HARD to fix. As far as I know there is nothing Turbine can do about it.

Thanks, that's exactly what it is. Unfortunately it does look like fixing it will be quite difficult. I'll see what I can do.

I don't have a clue you say? Then right after that you say it is HARD to fix...

Well, i have had that problem myself and solved it for DDO.

This is how i did: rolled back to first driver stable version. That's all.

Hope this helps. Also what kind of video card are you using Defunct?

(i am just trying to help here, i am not trying to be a smartass, thank you)

When you get a chance post the complete dxdiag, the limited data in that one doesn't give enough info.

Also if you haven't already sent one in I'd also suggest a tech support request as well.

It might/might not be related but those drivers for the Realtek card are fairly well prior to the full Win7 release date (Oct 2009) so they're probably either beta versions or just rewritten Vista versions.

I'd look into updating those first, Realtek does release updates for their drivers here (under the high definition audio codecs link).

I'd say to test if they're in fact the direct cause of the issue that you try running the game with the sound card disabled in 'Device Manager' (I'll paste the steps below) if only to see if the minimizing and driver recovery still happens when the games run without any sound hardware active at all.

    1. Click on the Start menu, then right-click on the "My Computer" (or Computer) icon and choose Properties
    2. Click the "Device Manager" option link on the left or select "Hardware" (tab) and click "Device Manager" (button)
    3. Click the + (plus sign) next to "Sound, video and game controllers"
    4. Locate your model sound card in the list and right click it and choose "Disable" and "Yes" when prompted.
    5. Close Device Manager and click Ok on the "System Properties" window if it is open.
    6. (If prompted to reboot the PC at this stage choose "Yes" before launching the game to test.)

This at least will help to eliminate the sound/drivers from the list of potential 'suspects'.

(Edit: Thought I'd add a note about my reasoning for why a sound driver could cause a graphics driver issue, in terms of keeping the video/audio rendering correctly there's some interaction between the two going on there. If it is related to the audio drivers running into an issue supporting the games sound settings, that might cause the graphics driver to essentially 'hiccup' trying to keep everything in sync, as such this may be why the driver's able to recover and the game doesn't "CTD" and instead just minimizes, resets and comes back up when Windows restarts the rendering through the graphics card.)

I've updated my sound drivers now, and I suppose I should clarify, the reason it minimized was because I had the game in full screen initially, and when the little message popped up to inform me of the graphics card crashing and restarting, it caused the game to minimize. I didn't even know this message popped up at first, because it's only there for a few seconds, and it vanished by the time the game finished minimizing.

I only noticed it when I switched the game to windowed mode, and I'm positive that it's the same error in both cases.

Sound is now disabled, and I'll boot up DDO to see if the problem is still happening. This might take a while though considering the fact that this video card crash thing is completely random and I have no way of knowing when it will strike next. I've gone days with nothing happening, and I've gone minutes with it happening several times.

EDIT: Sound is not the issue, just had it happen again.

EDIT 2: I think that MsEricka is right that it is a Windows TDR issue, seeing if I can't find a fix.

EDIT 3: I also feel I should note that when I started playing, I did not have this issue. Even up until a little while ago (a month, maybe a little more), I never saw this. But now I see it more and more.

There is an issue between DDO, Nvidia and TDR. There are dozens of posts on the forums about it.

My laptop has these same issues, and yet I can play other games for hours. Heck I let Skyrim run for 60 hours straight (idling) just to see if it would happen. Nothing.

Google search for "site:forums.ddo.com nvlddmkm" and it returns 4500 results. There is a problem that needs to be addressed here.

Nvidia forum post that details the issue.

    Recommended System Requirements

    O.S.: Windows® XP/Vista
Processor: P4 3.0GHz or AMD equivalent with SSE
    Memory: 1GB RAM
Graphics Card: GeForce FX or better with 128MB of memory
Network Connection: Cable Modem or DSL connection
    DirectX: DirectX 9.0c
Disc Space: 3GB 5GB for high resolution
TDR is a "feature" of Vista. I know Windows7 isn't supported, but Vista is. And odds are that if it's fixed for Vista then the fix would work for 7 as well.

So my question is, what do we gotta do to get this looked at?

If you feel it's a bug definitely report it via the link here but bear in mind that display driver crashes like this may not all be due to TDR, TDR being invoked may just be the result of a crash in the first place that might not necessarily be the result of an issue specific to the game client.

I would say to also follow up with a tech support request too since the issue may or may not be stemming from the game client itself but its interaction with the hardware and related drivers.
