For situations like this, I wwent ahead and spent an incredibly high amount of money for a unique feature on my computer. I know, I shouldn't have spent the money, but I don't know how I ever lived without it!
The most AMAZING piece of technological BRILLIANCE ever!!!! What is it you say??? Something the OP should seriously look into. Shear brilliance!! It is called, drum roll please......... A "Volume knob". Yeah!!! totally!!! My computer has this very unique ability to turn off all the sounds altogether so I dont have to listen to anyone in party!
And to think, in the old days I would just take my headphones off and lay them on the desk....

Its amusing but I don't often hear them spurting the nonsense BEFORE u step into a quest :P(Between quests it don't bother me so much, since nothing important is going on, but in the midst of mobs beating on you, people needing heals, etc, its highly annoying and distracting.)

I did something better than that. I went into Windoze and set the recording up to "wave out mix" - that makes anything that plays on my computer transmit over the voice chat system. This can be anything from ...oh say....the music theme from benny hill when some pew pew is kiting mobs....to...oh I dont know.....brick from anchormman screaming 'LOUD NOISES" when people are arguing over chat...to.....lets see....smooth jazz music when someone steps into a quest on normal difficulty.

Ah the quiet guy. I do think of him.

I think "Hey Quiet Guy, why don't you stop sitting on your mic and move it closer to the orifice that actually makes intelligible sounds so I don't have to max out my volume so that the next time LOUD GUY COUGHS HE RUPTURES MY EAR DRUMS!!"

That's why people need to type more. My headphones are reserved for music when I'm playing ddo. So most of the time it won't matter anyways since ddo sound is off.
