Rules don't matter, the dudes around the table do. For combat/action adventure, sorry 4E wins hands down. For 'simulating' a world, 3.5 wins.
Really I'm more impressed with how games are run compared to 15 years ago. No one runs a dungeon crawl anymore. Skill challenges, drama, episodic content, over arching storylines exc. Where RPG around the table has come is pretty amazing. go back and read say, G1-3 or D1-3 compared with something put together now. Hard to see they are even related.
doh, though i hate to agree with the esteemed major sir (if i really am ).

rpgs . . .role playing games have always been about the people playing them.
the rules are nothing but a compromise between the dm (the arbiter) and the players, designed to
promote fun. It matters not whether you're swinging sticks at a tree (swords at a dragon) in the woods,
or playing a mental game with random chance(dice) at a table, or even sitting at your computer [alone with your
mountain dew and hotpockets(insert your beverage (( mine would be leinenkugel fireside nut brown at the
moment)) and food of choice) and playing with people all over the world].
The only limits to the game are your own participation and your willingness to submit your mental image of what
you think the game should be to the creators of the campaign and your fellow players.

still not sure whether i'm agreeing or disagreeing here, but meh, too many leinies

Default On the subject of 3 vs 4 E

IMO 3E is the superior pen and paper game if your big on magic. And feel it makes every bit of sense for magic to dominate the game at high lvls of power. If your more of a fighter type you probably really dig on 4E and its changes which have for all intents turned everyone into a spells per day type class as far as special abilities being handed out to virtually every class.

The changes impact a D&D mmo only in positive ways as it actually mimics many of the aspects of DDO that are not part of the actual D&D rules. A system that was built with such abilites in mind is most certainly like to end up better balanced then the one we have here in DDO

Let me put it this way 4E doesnt in any way suffer the typical this class is better then that class debate. It lacks alot of the little things magic made possible in the older editions and focusses on a quick to play system rather then a complex one, making it more accessible to people in general.
