Default stabbymonk 12 monk ninja2/6ranger temp1/2 rogue - shortsword, drow

This build is based around making use of ninja spy with shortswords. The extra crit range from shortword (particularly epic cutthroat) takes great advantage of fists of iron in addition to all of the goodies that come from monk

ranger is a natural 2nd class for the tempest twf enhancements, favored enemy, and ram's might

I picked drow for the shortsword enhancements and the stats fit well in the build, even the charisma points aren't wasted with full ranks of umd

rogue is the last component with 1d6+3 sneak damage, full trap skills, and umd

the build is a bit tome heavy, you need at least a +1 dex tome to qualify for gtwf, a +2 con tome to qualify for t3 earth stance and the +2 int tome is optional but without it you won't be able to max dd at 20

a possible alternative to ranger is paladin 6 kotc or hotd but I think with the ki stills there will be enough to do without worrying about divine sacrifice or smites

let me know what everyone thinks

    Hi,

Made a very similar build a few days ago with elf 12monk/6ranger/2fighter. The bottomline from the feedback was that shortswords and longswords are way back in DPS compared to handwraps.

Also not sure if you are aware of this but TOD cant be used when wielding any weapons.

Besides those I like it. I only wish there was some way to make shortswords more competitive with handwraps.

You have to use quite a few featswaps because you are taking ranger quite late and you will propably want the twf feats earlier and then you get them for free later. Thats fine but its just good to plan ahead.

Most people however seem to think the sweetspot for monk in these kind of builds is 6 instead of 12. I tend to disagree but this seems to be the opinion of quite a few good players so dunno.

    Thanks for the feedback.

I get that weapons aren't as good as wraps for pure damage but I bet the difference isn't that great. 2d10 vanilla damage from wraps comes out to 11 damage a hit on average, epic cutthroat comes out to 10 damage a hit just for base damage when you count the drow enhancements. Cutthroat also has 3x the crit range making it take much better advantage of fists of stone, enduring strike, and the earth finisher. Plus the doublestrike chance is gravy.

The ranger levels give the mighty ram's might, favored enemy damage, and 10% extra offhand attack which helps close the gap.

And I realize touch of death doesn't work with weapons but I have quickdraw in there for easy swap to handwraps to pop touch of death when needed. Actually that is a good question though, is touch of death affected by potency and lore? If so then it would be tight to have a set of potency wraps JUST to use with touch of death.

Also the feat swapping isn't a big deal. Before ranger I would use wraps and a quarterstaff and leveling is too fast to worry about it. I'm not sure I could get gtwf before 15 anyway as a straight monk.

And one more thing, can you link to your build so I can see how you built everything?
