    Default Flight???

I was bugging my brother the other day about why he plays City of Heroes instead of DDO. One of the things he told me was flight. I know that there is a flight spell in the v3.5 PnP game, so there shouldn't too many people saying "That's not like DnD at all!" I understand that there are some areas where you're supposed to work to get there, so go ahead and put barriers that people would have to work around. I just thought it would be a cool idea.

I don't expect this to happen very soon. Just put it on the to-do list.

The difference between DDO and many other games is that it is not only in full 3D, but also has a HUGE array of objectives beyond "Kill X". These can be puzzles, mazes, etc. Having a spell that would allow you to bypass not only most trash mobs but also a huge number of obstacles doesn't work so well for this game, for the same reason Dimension Door isn't customizable - Way too easy to exploit.

Like I said, there are certain restrictions that could be placed to limit the spells effectiveness. However, there are people who would say that there's no point in even adding it.

There are just too many levels that would need a complete balance redesign because of adding this one spell. Not to mention that you'll never have to engage in melee combat again if you choose not to. I think they could implement the flight spell in some new quests if they were balanced to have it from the beginning.

They tried something similar a while back with underwater combat. They couldn't really add it retroactively to old quests, but they built a new quest and used the feature there. Unfortunately all that time was mostly wasted as none of the mobs in the area which contain underwater combat even need to be killed so most people just use invisibility and swim past.

If a new quest was designed with the flight spell in mind, then yes, I could see it being added in a limited sort of way, but it's just too much trouble to add it to older content.

Adding flight other than in some very special situations would cause more problems than benifits so its best to do it as they do now and have it in a few limited places such as a small section of reavers refuge and reavers fate.

I can understand that the fly spell would allow lots of exploits, so I can live with it not being in the game. Having said that, in my last PnP campaign, I had a transmuter focused wizard that lived for exploiting the DM's dungeons...fly, passwall, dimension door, etc not to mention slippers of spider climbing which let you walk on celings and walls to avoid traps, be out of range of mobs while you cast spells at them, etc Good times
