Meh, I disabled my rep a long long time ago. Its a worthless system for bullies to use against you and Mods use to identify you. Too much neg rep? You must have said something horrible and a Mod will sweep in to spank you.

Good to know, seems kind of silly that you need such a high number. Thanks for the information +1 when Im able.
On one side I can see how it 'can' do some good. On the other I can see how easily abusable it is. I'd say the latter pretty much negates the entire idea behind it. Should definitely be 'fixed' to do what its supposed to do if nothing else.
Urgol the Registrar says, 'Urgol sad, cry tiny kobold tears! Too tiny to see - but Urgol not let you inside.'
Please don't tell me I am incorrect because it happened to me and I had to have Turbine step in and remove all of the illegal neg reps. At -250 it goes into a moderation queue but that queue is really /dev/null (aka file 13 aka the trash) and they never ever get posted on. I know first hand what I am talking about with this subject and I have discussed it with Turbine when it happened to me. It is not being used appropriately by the masses at large.
I just wish Turbine would remove it and bring in moderators like the other forums I post on.
The rep on the forums is akin to a high school popularity contest. All depends on how much it means to you I guess.
Nope. Turbine has to fix the clocks on their servers. Nothing we can do about it.
This would be great for a "look at this, now look back at me" post, but I'm not that talented.
But 5% or less of my rep came from funny pictures or jokes.
1% or less came from a very large thread I'm a part of.
I will often go into heated debate threads of my choosing. (I try not to beat the dead horse, however.)
I often express myself (as work allows.)
So you can do both.
The problem is that "working like its supposed to" implies there are rules in place and those rules are enforced. Then the rules lawyers start picking away at the rules and find a way to use the red griefing button sans consequences.
Example: It states that "trolling" is a reason to give neg rep. If I ask 20 different people what "trolling" is I will get 20 different definitions. With such a variable definition of even this one rule, I can now hand neg rep to whoever I want to sans consequence. We havent even begun to analyze the other listed reasons and already I have rules lawyered that I can rep grief people for any reason I deem, just by defining their actions as "trolling". /fail.
The recipients only recourse then is to appeal the rep, and when doing so, pray that the mod on duty who handles that doesnt share the same definition of what constitutes "trolling" that I share, or it doesnt get removed.
Nuking the entire system and going with report only, helps alleviate the entire rules lawyering issue. IMO, if youre going to report someone there had better be a reason to do so, because each and every report is reviewed (where this isnt the case with rep) - and the reporters actions are under review as well by proxy. If the same user reports everyone they disagree with in a thread they are drawing immediate attention to their own actions and can be dealt with accordingly. Same goes for someone who reports every post by a single user trying to grief that user.
Thus, "report only" is better than having a rep system that mods are much less involved with. Users know they have to handle the system with care and cant simply grief with impunity those they disagree with, due to the fact that each use of report lands on a mods desk.

i have to disagree with ya i don't post all that often but seem like lately for every few pos rep i get a get a neg rep i started reporting it when i thort it was unjust neg rep . the neg rep was taking off once the first time i reported and next 2 times i reported some ( only got the neg rep because some poster disagreed with my opinion, was nothing offense or trollish etc ) and yet got a big fat ignore from the mods.
worse part is i cant even neg rep ( as i dont have enough rep LOL ) anyone, seems like a lopsided system, that like some have pointed out, is like being in a high school popularity contest.
in all the games i have played DDO has the WORST forums i have ever seen

Sure, I get plenty of neg rep too because I have my own opinion and don't mind sharing it regardless of the size of my "opponents*" ep... I mean, green bars but overall I seem to get more positive than negative so it's all good.
*in a debating competition sense of the word.
If you seem to get negative rep more often than not then can I suggest you look at your own actions first rather than blaming the system at large?
Suggestions:
1. Check your facts before you state them.
2. Differentiate between fact and opinion.
3. Attack the argument, not the person.
4. Don't make posts that can be legitimately neg repped (even I've been guilty of trolling at one time or another without really meaning to)
That's not to say that the forums don't have their fair share of immature bullies who will neg rep without good reason but, in the end, this is the internets, if you don't like it ...
I'd rather have that than what we have now from people who can, and do, have chips on their shoulders and anonymously neg rep people into oblivion.
I like authority that is out in the open so you know which mods are ******s and which ones are not instead of the mob rule and petty way it is being allowed to run now.
It was 1500 when started, I don't remember them changing it but if someone else knows, speak up!
I would add that often it is also HOW you say it that gets posters in trouble. When in doubt, be nice. Without emphasis or indication, tone is too often left for the reader to decide and that can be a bad thing. Be clear.
I have rarely given out neg rep and I have generally openly stated when I gave it. If I am willing to give it, I should be willing to say that I did.

Your absoulty right....its so much better to have to deal with moderators who have a chip on their shoulder than a few random idiots
Am I fan of the current rep system...no, but it sure beats the hell out of the gestapo reign of terror we once had. Threads disappearing, posts that werent offensive but failed to pass the PR departments check list getting modded or completly removed on a whim and Fanboy Inc. getting a free pass to say what ever when ever they wanted and anyone who disagreed either got nuked from orbit or modderated into oblivion, careful what you wish for you just might get it.
There is a reason there is a whole "other" forum that spawned out of the TnT forum wars.

People can only neg rep other people about once a week... And if it's undeserved, you can report the post and state "I believe I was unfairly given neg rep for this post", and it will be removed.
No one can neg rep you into oblivion.
The rep system seems to work perfectly well as far as I can tell... I argue with people and state my views... I'm not the most popular person on the board. I don't have guildies or friends who pos rep me every day...
I rarely get neg rep, and when I do, 50% of the time I deserved it, and 50% of the time, I get it removed by the mods.
I don't see the system being abused. The few people I have seen with massive neg rep all deserved it. They were very negative, and rude.
I remember that time as well and had some of my threads disappear too but can you think of a better way?
I remember when we showed Turbine that, beyond a shadow of a doubt, their upcoming mod5 lag reducing 'adjustment' to two weapon fighting did nothing for lag and was only a stealth nerf. That adjustment is when I left because the mods/Turbine told everyone that if anything you say can be construed as negative towards this game you would be permanently banned from the forums. I used to have the link to the post of them saying that but finally cleaned it out when it 'suddenly was never written'.
Bad times but this current system is just as easily abused, and is, by the masses and mob rule is no rule at all just chaos.
Not that because adding lol, or heheh, or lawl, or anything you will still get it. Email, and text messaging, is the same way because you may say something in jest and the public has a crotch hair the wrong way and takes it completely wrong and blammo.
I was told that if you post a picture of a kitten you will get a bunch of good rep but expect a lot bad too from the puppy lovers. To see that in action look at the picture of Von3 that someone did. He has 20 posts and his green squares are going off the grid due to just that. Lovely picture but it shows the people telling me to post pics was right.
You are right I had it removed by Turbine but afterwards I was also told by people to make an alternate account to post what I feel because your main account should only be used for positive postings or no posting at all because it will happen.
How would you feel if suddenly you were neg repped into complete silence as you watched it mount up against you? Not by a bunch of people but 3 or 4 people. Count it 3 or 4 people. 1 neg rep and some big dogs carry so much weight that the one neg rep will almost squelch you. Do you honestly think that is right? I know I sure don't and everyone, regardless who, or what, or how many green boxes they have, should carry 1 vote only not this horrible weighted scale Turbine created just for the bullies.
