All my characters are evil, regardless of what the alignment text says.

Pretending to be good is just part of my evil plan.

    MUAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAH

I suppose I have seen this requested at least once a month or so, by people who want to choose "Evil" as an alignment.

Now, while I often see the enticement of being "Badarse" or perhaps it boils down to something like "OH look I am evil and thus Cool!" this is not the way the game is designed. In the world of Dungeons and Dragons Evil and Good are not mutable aspects of life, simply being Evil does not equate to being the misunderstood Villain of a Comic book, who has noble intentions behind their actions and thus can cross back and forth between the boundary lines of good and evil.

No, in Dungeons and Dragons, Evil is absolute, it is Solid, and it is a real alignment. The Evil player will not side with the cause of justice and help the Innocent, or ease pain and suffering. And unlike many might be led to believe, being greedy, IE: I am doing it for the loot. is also not Evil.

I see this misconception all the time, that Evil is "Good with a bit of nasty". That it is nobility with a different outlook. Nothing could be further from the truth. Evil is Evil.

Would an evil player side with a dying village against a swarm of monster fish people who controlled a Dragon? Absolutely not. Why? Well, because they are not Hero's. They are not going to "help the people" they are not in it to save the day at the risk of their own life.

An Evil player would join the Sahuagin, if only tentatively, as long as it worked in their best interest, whereupon they would gratify their urges by raping the women, taking them as slaves and pets, then mocking the men for hoping to stand against such a force. A dying fishing village thought they stood a chance? What fools to even hope you had a chance. Once they found out about Hayden, they would most likely torture him to find out anything he knows., and thus learn of the Mindflayer, Where they would then try to level up, and get better, only so they could control the mindflayer and make it do their bidding.

After taking total control of Krothos, like a right and proper evil player would, they would move on to Storm reach, since Kobols are only good as a slaves, that is what they would do. perhaps. even finding out about the Halls of Shan To Kor, and then getting the Seal only so they could work on forging an alliance with the Giants to take over the city. A Whole new world to conquer and subjugate.

Which, to make any of this happen, would require a full revamp of the game. Sorry. Misunderstood Good players, are just that, Misunderstood GOOD players. You want to play a Hero who has to make hard moral choices about if they should purge some heritics, then this is the game for you, if you want to be a Hero and feel guilt for having to kill eladrin, to then discover you got double crossed by some daemons and in revenge, kill them too. Then this is the game for you.

But do not mistake Evil, the alignment, for some off idealism of misunderstood Good, or Good with "rough edges" or being "Edgy" Evil is truly just that. Evil.

Here is a really good way to look at the the Alignments: The Alignment Chart.

So in closing, as far as this game is designed and built, there is no place for an Evil player, beyond being on the loosing side. Because almost every named mob you kill, that was, well someone who wanted to play "Evil", what was their fate again? Oh right. To die at a Hero's hands.
Terrific post and summary of Evil in Eberron. (Can't +1 you right now. )
