Default help with switch from p2p to f2p

I'm thinking of dropping my sub due to financial difficulties, and also because I haven't logged in and played in 4 months (since my daughter was born). I have about 8 characters ranging from lvl 4 to level 20 and all of them have quite a bit of gear.

My question is how would I go about dropping from p2p to premium with the least amount of issues. I suppose I'll have to delete some characters, or is there a way to add character slots before downgrading? Is there a guide out there dealing with the switch from pay to non-pay?

I don't WANT to take money away from DDO, but I'm simply not playing enough to be paying money I really could be using more wisely...

So, any help on the technical HOW to change would be useful. Also, some real life experiences from those who have done the same to help illuminate the path of least resistance and avoid the aggravation of losing items or characters I didn't want to lose would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You get to choose 4 characters to play. Premium has 4 slots free. If you want the gear from those characters, move gear over from those you don't plan on playing anytime soon. Your unplayable characters will still be there when you unlock more slots.

You'll need to have races and classes unlocked to play those characters if the race or class is purchased.

You can add more character slots before you stop your VIP.
Disappointed and without trust in the powers that be.

You dont have to add more slots, you can just choose which of the characters you will be able to log in and play, the others stay there but are locked until you buy some slots. No hurry on that as far as i know, there is a really good thread out there with a lot of info on all of this.

There was a fantastic post on this subject when they first annnounced that arty was not going to be free to vips. Very detailed "guide".

Might try searching around for it a bit.

Yeah, I recently dropped VIP over the Arti release decisions, and haven't paid any money since. One thing I tried to do is put anything I though I might want, but wasn't sure which character, in my shared bank. You can still withdraw from there, just can't put anything in it. Stuff like Epic Tokens, Shavarath Trophies. Unfortunately, you can't just take a portion of a stack, like from the normal bank. So you have to take the whole stack at once.

You definitely don't have to delete characters. Just make sure any unbound or BtA items that you think you might want are off them.

    Default Method

I did this a while back. Remember, if you have any premium Races/Classes that are granted by PTP you will have to purchase them to use your character. Here is what i say to do:

    1. Wait until there is a sale of Turbine points - ie 6900 for 50 ( i think that is what the good deal usually is) and spend 100-150 (depending on your race/class/additional character slot needs). Yes i know its alot but FTP has a large cost of entry but then it gets alot better.

    2. Purchase your must have content - for me this is what i need to get to lvl 20 as painless as possible and to do the raids i want (I started with Delera's, Necro2, Gianthold, Desert, Vale, Shavarath, Sub and IQ.

    3. Keep your eye on the store and buy additional content THAT YOU WILL USE when it goes on sale. I don't have catacombs, tangle root, a few others just because i hate doing those quests.

    4. Keep taking advantage of those Turbine point sales. - The only time i spend money on the game now is on point sales, always buy the 50 dollar option. This means it usually goes a few months without me buying any and then when the sale pops up i take advantage. I made the switch when the FTP module came out and i know i have spend far less than what subscription fees cost. It just take a little while to hit that break even point.

    5. Use those tps on stuff that matter - more, new content, new races, XP or spell point pots. You are now in a way better position than alot of PTP people with the number of turbine points you have accrued. I think i am sitting on around 12-15k and haven't bought points in over half a year.

Enjoy, If you plan on playing for over a year, this is the most cost effective way to go.
    Wow!
