I don't know how plausable or useful it is, but would a mail icon for the character selection screen be useful to anybody. Also a count of how many unread messages are waiting?
I don't know how to make this suggestion to the developers, besides using this forum.

I would like more out of game notifications as well. Either via logged in and myDDO. But at the character screen would be a great start.
