Directx11 won't run

If you have already checked to make sure compatibility mode is not enabled for the game files (please check the steps I posted above if you are new to this thread and are experiencing this issue!), try the following:

1. First, restart your computer. This will make sure that both the game and the game launcher are closed for the following steps.

2. After restarting, click on the Windows "Start" button

3. Then click on "My Documents" or "Documents"

4. Double-click the "Dungeons and Dragons Online" folder

5. Within there locate and rename the "userpreferences.ini" file (eg. olduserpreferences.ini)

6. Relaunch the game, log in, and pause at the "server select" list

7. Before logging in click the first button in the row in the upper right-corner (the one with the single down-arrow on it)

8. Choose Options from the menu

9. In there under the "Repair" tab click to enable the "Reset game display settings" option and click ok

10. Then select your server and launch the game again to test. If the game detects that you have a DX 10/11 capable OS/video card, it should prompt you to enable DX 10/11 at this point

Let us know whether this allows you to re-enable DX 10/11.

This was overly complicated.

I was having this exact issue as well.

I was able to repair DirectX with Microsoft's DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer (http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35).

DirectX 11 is now selectable again in the Options.

Well if anyone was thinking of reinstalling to fix the problem (as I tried) don't bother - the install files are still from U10 so you just end up patching to U11 and bazinga, back to DX9 (assuming patching really is the problem). Will try again in a couple of weeks after all the innevitable fixes and hope to get a clean set of U11 install files. Untill then none of the suggested fixes have got me DX10 enabled so I guess its no glossy water effects for me.

I'm not disuading anyone from trying the fix - I specifically said that it did not work for 'me' - no implication as to the joy others are experiencing. I'm just saying that if anyone else is also not having any luck after trying those fixes and are hoping that a clean U11 install will help then they should wait because the files are not there yet.

And yes I have ticked all the boxes (delete config, run windows patch, reboot, run game and all combinations thereof) but still no happy ending.

Sorry - I see you're talking about re-installing the whole game. What I (and 8 other posters in this thread) can vouch for is the Dx11 install link from post#16

A full clean install of U11 once it's made available shouldn't (in theory) encounter the issue.

Well its been a few weeks but the official DDO Download is still giving U10 so it just patches and forces things back to DX9 again. Guess the good folk at Turbine must be so busy fixing bugs and building U12 that nobody has got around to putting the U11 files on the download site yet. Have tried all other sorts of things with windows etc and still no joy. Will give it a shot again in another couple of weeks and hope there is a clean download to try and report on at that time.

I am having the same issue, though my cause is slightly different. I recently got a SSD as a boot drive, still using exactly the same client install, copied the userprefs.ini, and ran the DX11 repair tool (dx11 is installed and working fine) I have Windows 7 64 bit, booting off my old raptor I can run 2 clients fine both with dx11 in 1920x1080 windows, on the fresh install even Directx9 is greyed out.

One note, I had an issue earlier with the VB 2005 hotfix reinstalling itself every time I ran ddo, then windows would complain and say it could not install the VB 2008 update, installing SP1 seems to have resolved that conflict (which was alot of the reason I got the SSD in the first place).

Solved, the problem is in a wrong graphic adapter parameter.
If you run dxdiag and see Directx11 in first windows, but in the display tab you have Version DDI: 93e (and not 11), then u have the problem.

For fix it only need:

- go in the device management --> Video card --> and right click on the name of the video card then press Unistall.
- After remove the video card reboot the system.
- At startup, windows reinstall the hardware driver (take a few minutes) and then reboot again.

At this point in dxdiag you must have "Version DDI:11" in display Tab.

In my case don't need reinstall directx or nvidia driver but may be need to do it.

The post that suggested running Microsoft's DX web installer worked for me.
Sorry to necro this thread, but I was extremely frustrated with having a rig capable of DX11 Utra Quality running in DX9 mode and found this thread hoping it would solve my problem.
Have Windows 8.1 with a NVIDIA GTX 660, FWIW.
