    Default Irksome and frustrating..

Long post. Apologies. I recently spent a lot of money to acquire a new PC, and play mostly DDO-though it will support Crysis on everything "super high" no issues. There are 2 frustrating things that occur which are spoiling my play somewhat..

    1. Periodic jerkiness, freezing and generally not always smooth-an example-running from market vendors to airship port would have at least 2 brief stutters. To start with I set everything to "ultra", but have recently scaled this down to detected optimal. I used to get the Sub-T drag, so disabled env shadows and now that's ok. Firstly, am I just being silly? Is that the nature of online games that there are minor freezes here and there? Internet connection is 30mbps fibre optic, so hopefully not that. Indoor zones seem smoother, and if I'm outside and perform a standard animation (drink pot/use clicky) then the stutter often occurs. The classic freeze/stutter triggers like lots of mobs on screen don't make any difference to this.

    2. Every so often the game utterly freezes. Alt tab etc doesn't work, only a full reboot. This isn't so often as to become hugely annoying, but still a problem. There is no pattern or predictability to this.

Here is what I have done so far with relation to either problem 1 or 2...

-Ordered a new sound card! Creative x fi (2)
    -Updated display drivers (1+2)
-Made various tweaks to graphics setting below, (all for 1.)
    -Maxed framerates at 63
    -Taken ant filtering to 2
-lowered croud size to 0 (? bottom of adv graph setting?)
-Increased memory cache etc to full
-Other things that I will remember as people ask.
    -Disabled firewall
    -Disabled AV

The system is only 3 months old and has very little on besides DDO. There aren't any obvious background applications running that don't need to be. Now another dimension to this whole issue is that I have experienced the above a lot more since we moved house 2 weeks ago....Same ISP, quicker speed (tested at 30.6 Mbps) Lan cable direct into router (virgin media super hub). Moving things around also meant I had to set up my sound ingame again.

Let be clear, this is a bugbear, a snag, a niggle. DDO is playable and mostly enjoyable. But when you spend a hefty whack on what I hope you'll agree is a tidy machine, you want as close to perfection in gaming as possible. I would like....

-Ideas. Things to try to eliminate certain possibilities.
    -Suggestions of root causes
-A sense check-is there such thing as perfectly smooth? Am I getting carried away-is the pc not actually all that awesome and I'm being picky?

Some of the other forums I've read, for reference.....

And lastly my dxdiag if someone can offer instruction on how to make this into a neat file then I'll edit and do. Copied and pasted for now.

    Hi grayham,

    Regarding:

Being an online game I don't expect 100% smooth interrupt-free gaming experience as I would from a single-player locally installed game. As a disclaimer I don't play other MMO's so cannot make a comparison of DDO to other instance-based online games.

There are several spots in the public areas which are renowned for causing a slight pause if running past them as an area (one of them being the fallen column Helga Rocksmasher sits on - presumably for reasons of flowing water+audio)

A solid state drive will help with the client-side reading of the dat files but other than lowering settings (especially things like EAX sound when using on-board audio) there isn't much that can be done to mitigate these very minor hitches as you run past specific locations to my knowledge.

I did test the path you are referring to and observed that there was a very slight hitch only if my route took me in a direction that caused a pathing collision with the NPCs 'Dayman stonemason' or 'Valden Fey' - these guys move around and being close to them when running I did see a hitch so I don't know if thats what you experienced too.

If so and you confirm my findings I would bug report it for QA to verify and inform the developers or place on the known issues list.

There are a few of these 'mobile' NPCs and if given the choice between a static instance or one that gave appearance of 'life' then I'd personally bear with the very slight pauses if I knew it's specifically because of their immediate vicinity when they path.

P.S The how to get help sticky instructs how to wrap the dxdiag correctly with the code tags.

For the entire system to lock up with non-responding OS then you are normally talking hardware issues.

Ensure your BIOS is using version F4.

Check your graphics card is firmly in place and has the required 150W 8-pin PCI Express power connector and one 75W 6-pin PCI Express power connector.
(AMD also have a table of certified PSU for their cards.)

Run a memory test after reseating your memory

Ensure all the sata cables are secure and that event viewer is not reporting any disk errors prior to the freeze.

Check the temperature your system is running at using vendor utilities

Ensure any already installed Gigabyte software is up to date and not performing any automatic 'tuning' of your system.

Power supply - harder to determine if this is the cause but check it meets the demands of the components, and once everything else has been excluded ask a reputable computer firm to run diagnostics

The house move could have further dislodged a component so that's where I'd start anyway based on what you have said.

Smitey-Thanks so much for giving your time to look at this and offer advice.

EAX is a good place to start, I think I may have disabled this to begin with, and because it didn't help problem 1 then put it back on, but I don't recall any crashes when EAX was off. I will take a look at all the hardware-this isn't a custom built machine though, it's a palicomp i5 sniper. I'd be wary of tinkering with it too much incase I void my warranty.

There are some great suggestions re problem 1, so I will try them, and thanks again.

Palicomp's warranty and terms make no mention of a void clause - so if there is no seal on the case you should be fine to merely inspect inside, but if you are totally unfamiliar with PC internals and anti-static measures then I would advise contacting their support department on (01270) 898 078 and they can run you through what they permit/wish you to check.

Again, thanks again, superb advice. +1 though not sure whether that works with rep disabled.

    Update...

Problem 1-smooth play...Sometime better sometimes worse but I think it may just be something I have to learn to live with. Sins of attrition last night was awfully sticky, plenty of half second freezes.. I've opened up the DDO ports as portforward.com list them.

Problem 2- Game total lock/freeze-... I now have a new soundcard with the most up to date drivers and it still froze.

Update-this problem is getting worse since U11, now in comms with tech support, who unsurprisingly have asked me to put everything on low,dx9,engine speed low no sound. In the 45mins I could bear to run around (I can't quest with everything looking dreadful and no sound!) there were no crashes, but then again I'd need to go for 3 hours in those conditions to fully test since I have occasionally had that long beforehand with everything on uber.

As an experiment I upped to DX10 on high, enabled sound but left engine speed alone and it crashed on the loading screen while switching characters, which has never happened before.

If, like me, this is driving you mad, I feel your pain. I promise to update this thread with any useful info and to post a solution when/if it happens.

P.S Having followed this link from a related thread, Windows spent a good 5mins downloading and installing various bits. This may be irrelevant but is my latest vain hope......

Is that Turbine support or Palicomp grayham?

For a three-month old PC I'd be speaking to the vendor regarding a full system freeze and put the emphasis on them to ascertain all the components are stable and compatible.

Thanks again for the reply Smitey.

DDO tech support. I have spoken to Palicomp, but they think I should pursue the DDO tech line of enquiry, since the system is 100% stable on super high settings running....

    Crysis
    L4D
    L4D2
    Assassins creed
    LOTRO (Yeah, weird huh!)

We're going through the process of elimination at the moment, but above DX fix download+resetting of preferences (renaming .ini etc) has proved useless, though I did get a decent 90 mins or so out of it today on dx11 recommended, even switched toons a few times. I took a look at the dndclient log and saw the following messages a few times with slight variations....

172980251.152: 0x3900049C: error: The particle system has specified a holding location id [0x1000002c] but the model setup has no such holding location. This will cause the particle system to not display!

172980249.323: Attempting to set a NetSharedVisually or NetSharedPrivately property (Appearance.Mod@Pet::m_fColorShift_Driven) on the client. This is not allowed, because these are server-authorative.

172980249.161: 0x05001404: error: The animation has 46 bones while the setup "" (0x040007BD) has 29 bones. The number of bones in the animation must be the same as the setup.

Gray, Smitey, that netshare sounded really odd so I did some looking. I found nothing related to it/what it is, however...

I found this little blast from the past with the same issue so far as listed in that log. I have zero clue if it will help or not.

I get the first two - they appear regualurly so can be ignored - the last one I presume relates to the specific character and I would imagine it too is a informational message rather than a serious issue.

Default DDO Freeze crash system lock

So, the saga takes another interesting twist, though I fear this is slightly unusual so even if it helps me, it's not likely to help others...

Not long after the last post the system froze...Browsing the web..A worrying first... When I rebooted it froze on the desktop after 5 seconds. An even more worrying first. So, DDO tech is now an irrelevance and I'm on the phone to Palicomp, my PC vendor again. Once I'm on the phone to them I remember a significant detail...

My system comes 'out of the box' overclocked. But. Perhaps 2 months ago, my wife put the system into sleep-she often does this on our laptop so did it without thinking. the PC needed several attempts to get it going but once it booted up all seemed well though the clock speed had reverted to normal. I didn't experience any noticeable difficulties with DDO at first so assumed all was fine. Well, when I spoke to Palicomp they told me that the Mboard voltage was confused so this could well be a source of system instability. We've now put the clock speed back to it's original overclocked speed, My next steps are...

    1. To try everything including DDO as it was when I first bought the system, and if problems persist.....--->

    2. To put the clock speeds to normal and run like that for a while. Failing that I will get back in touch with Palicomp and pursue that avenue before going back to DDO tech....

Thanks to Smitey for all his help, and to DDO tech for their efforts.

Agghhh. further to above problems crashing problems have continued despite system being returned to it's original overclocked state. I got beautiful (smooth!!!) gameplay for 90mins or so, freeze, another 30mins, freeze....... Next step is default failsafe settings..Will post as and when I have more info. Ticket with DDO tech closed for time being since desktop freeze previously mentioned points firmly to hardware issues.

Further update. Freezing fixed (crosses fingers) 2 day stretch, longest since problems began.

In brief? Bios update, as originally suggested by Smitey. I couldn't update the Bios myself as it said it wasn't compatible with Win7 64bit, but I got tech support under my PC warranty, who remote desktopped and used some software from the gigabyte site to auto update (@bios, I believe).

If you're having this problem then yes, it's probably hardware. Smitey has lots of good suggestions and deserved real credit for his help, not just to me but generally.

    Thanks all.

It sounds to me like your graphics card might be overheating. Is that overclocked also? I have an HP Pavillion laptop that did exactly as your describing.....

Back when I first started playing DDO I would also have similar issues - after months of troubleshooting I figured out that it was my Creative X-Fi card. It wasn't faulty, but instead had to do with creative sound drivers and openal32.dll. I tried my best to figure out a way to use my card and play the game but in the end I had to take it out and use the onboard sound. Since then I've not had any issues. It might be a reasonable idea to try a different sound card manufacturer or just utilize the onboard sound. I know someone who has had success with an Asus Xonar card. Maybe that will be useful for you.
    Good luck with your issue.

Further update after more than a week of smooth trouble free play.

Bios update ftw!. Key phrase for update was "improves system stability"

Graphics card/sound card? Possibly for other players suffering this, not me.
Graphics Card is fairly cool as case is well ventilated, nothing above 45c.
Sound card? Crash was occuring before and after I purchased the x-fi. That addition was incidental.

Will add a final 'closing' update when I get a good 2-3 week stretch. Thanks to all for reading , to Smitey for his help and I hope this thread helps someone else.

Apols for the necro but I did promise a closing post for those who were watching/helping.

The odd freeze here and there, but mostly fixed since Bios update.
