    Default Yo Beer_man

I know you'd appreciate this bud

As of mid-week next week (when the last few components come in - Burner and 24qt SS kettle), yours truly will be brewing his own IPA's. B hooked up a SWEET starter kit for my bday that included just about everything I need to get started. I've wanted to do this for a long time, but it was one of those things that I would never really buy for myself.

I'm going to call the first batch- "Cary's 8itchin Baby Brew" in honor of the incoming kiddos since they'll both be ready at about the same time so next time you head this way, beer party at my house!

I'm thinking about trying a moose drool next with a few extra NW hops tossed in at the end for aroma.

My buddy and I just plotted out a pale ale batch.

It's a blast making your own, and pretty satisfying drinking your own beverages

That's way cool. I've kicked around doing that a time or two but when I realy looked into it it just seemed easier to go to the stor & buy a 6 pack. It does seem like a good time though. LMK how it goes maybe you can convince me to try it out brewing as well.
If the toon is named after a beer 17 of them are mine & 1 more not named after a beer (the black sheep of the family). Beware there are a few beer imposters out there. Unless the toon has been "Banned From All Guilds" it's a fake Beer_Dude. Fake Beer in your group leaves a nasty taste.

I have brewed for years all sorts of beers. Lots of fun to be had. I have actually got ten fairly good with estimating alcohol percentage. While a hydrometer is important gear I now employ the 6 pint test. Drink 6 pints and I then stand up and judge how I feel. I am usually +/- .3% Currently though I am working on a mead project. I am sorta into barbarian thing.....mead and pillaging. Mead mostly.

I will let you all know how it turns out around December.

PS a good read and excellent resource is "Joy of Home Brewing" Charlie Papazian pretty much the place to start after you get into the hobby.

I started brewing a few years ago and find it to be a highly fun and rewarding hobby. It is definitely more work than just buying a 6-pack, but there is something to be said for the satisfaction of pouring yourself a frosty glass (or ten) of something that you know absolutely that no one else is drinking.

Highly recommend checking out this book if you're considering homebrewing. "Relax! Don't worry! Have a homebrew!" Words to live by, no doubt about it.

Thanks for the book recommendation folks - will have to check that out.

I'm looking forward to starting the first batch. I'm not a huge beer drinker, but really enjoy a finely crafted brew. Plus, it's a great excuse to throw beer parties!

    Mead is delicious.

I'm almost afraid to ask, but what is moose drool in this context? *trepidation*

I recommend trying this if you are East of the Mississippi and can find it.

They are a local microbrew that makes a tasty variety of delicious craft and seasonal beers.

I got my dad into brewing his own beer some years ago. He got totally into it, had a keg system going, multiple batches brewing at a time, multiple types of home-brewed beer every time I visited. It was awesome. As far as hobbies go, brewing beer is a pretty great one to have

    Default My ESB

Is in the secondary fermenter. Original gravity about 1.075, so rough guess is it'll be 6% ABV +/- a tick. Could probably have used more hops based on what I tasted from starting the siphon. A week in the secondary, then 7-10 days in bottle, and I'll be ready for one of those Saturday drunken raids. Saturday's (other than next Saturday) tend to work out better for me anyway.

    lol

You know you always have a spot first in the line of screaming ladies waiting outside my door.

Spathic - Great news on your ESB man! I racked the 8itchin Baby brew into the secondary a little over a week ago and added a Willamette Valley dry hop. I'm looking to bottle this Saturday, a 2-3 week 70 degree bottle condition then 2 week cold condition and I'm ready to try the first brew.

OG on the baby brew was 1.050, so I'll be curious to see what the FG reading will be when I go to bottle. I'm betting I'm looking at about 7% or so.

I'm thinking about a nice stout next, since it will be ready around the time B will stop breastfeeding and the IPA will be gone. (She loves a good stout) (heh)

Man I hope the baby brew tastes as good as this Terminal Gravity IPA I'm sipping on right now.

Bottled the beer yesterday after mixing it with the priming solution (Sugar boiled into water). I tasted the beer and it has a fantastic nose and flavor, but a bit on the bitter side - a byproduct of the dry hop I'm betting. I'm hoping it will smooth out with a 3 week bottle condition then a 1-2 week cold condition.

Speaking of kiddos: T-minus 7-8 weeks and counting
