Background:

Couple weeks ago, I was running Trial by Fire. Leveling my Halfling Warchanter.

There's a locked door in there w/an arachnid optional. Optional XP, optional chest, both fast and easy.

We have a Rogue. One of those new "big stick" builds I guess. He was a half-orc w/a quarterstaff and a Rogue icon.

With GH, and a Skill Song, he still had to like roll a 17 or something silly to get the lock. Now... I know the lock isn't that hard. I just finished my Assassin's TR right before starting on the Warchanter. So, I look at his MyDDO, and assume from what he was wearing two hours beforehand... this guy needs gear.

I quest a while more, and when my day is coming to a close, I send him two different Open Lock items - one +13, one +15. From various toons, but marked "From Festivius", the Warchanter's name.

Today:

Today, I log onto my Assassin to find returned mail. It's the +15 OL Gloves.

This is where I have now become annoyed.

I didn't expect a word of thanks, or even a friendly gesture in return. But ****** Sarlona, if someone goes out of there way to assist you with an obvious deficiency, at least be smart enough to take 'em and use 'em. That's all I ask.

Maybe the player hasn't logged on for a while, or didn't open his mail. Happens to me sometimes, somehow I didn't realise the new mail icon was there. So the mail is automatically sent back.

Or, maybe he thought that it was a wrong mail as (e.g. someone mistyped his name or something). So he thought that the polite thing to do was just send it back to the sender, in case it was a mix-up. This would be the first thing that come to my mind too, if no message was attached to the item.

Just you know, a couple of reasons that the mail was sent back to you.

Yup...totally possible....all sorts of reasons mail can get returned...especially if it is from somebody you don't know because then it goes into a totally different mail slot that most people never even check.

I have had a stack of major sp pots returned to me after a couple of weeks.

That means the sendee certainly knew about and checked the Unconfirmed tab. He took one of the pair (the +13 ones) and didn't take the other.

Lol, maybe cos he think that taking 2 gloves would b e too greedy? Why would he need two anyway? So just take the lesser one and send the more expensive one back?

I suppose that the person could have just not logged on in.. weeks. I've just seen plenty of instances where I try to assist someone and... nothing.

Why ?

Without a message misunderstandings are possible.

e.g instead of

"here, take some equippment i can spare so you can do better next time. I am always willing to help newbies"

one could understand :

"here, look. If you had these things like every decent rogue you would have been able to do your job, n00b. And everybody should be able to afford them, thats why i can send not only one but two pairs just to show you."

or something inbetween. Or completely different.


If i would get such mail i might send it back myself (and shamefully buy my own equippment on the ah).
