Is there any way with the new update to alter the material of a crafted item?

No. The only way to get a crafted item to have a special material is to start with a special material item to begin with and then disjunction it for crafting.

Well, here's to hoping that Turbine would allow us to (eventually) create whatever base items with whatever materials we'd like to....

I honestly believe like trapmaking, Turbine is going to evetually allow us to make base items from raw matriels. Which would add yet again another awesome level of awesome depth to this game.
