Default 1/1/18 build for a guildie

Edit: Build posted for a guildie as a basic guide. If you feel the need to criticize please keep it constructive.. other build referrals or suggested changes are fine.. would prefer to keep the bashing to a minimum.

Skill Focus UMD: faste of a feat as you'll be able to max it out.

Your reflex save is going to suck.

Not having Improved crit until level 18 is a very poor choice.

i cannot for the life of me figure out why you have 13 CHR.

    Two toughness feats? Really?

    Enhancements look jumbled.

Thanks for the input that wasnt requested or needed lol

The build wasnt posted so much for a lvling up setup as what id end up with at 20th. It also does the things that were specifically requested by the guildie which is why the title doesnt provide more info.. this was simply a post to show him the build without having to type it all out in game.

Sorry if that came off rude btw..

If it's posted on the forums, it's gonna get commented on, especially if it makes what look like suboptimal choices. You wanna avoid the peanut gallery, that's what e-mail is for, grasshopper.

Gotcha. Post a crappy build to the forums so you can link your guildie to it. Ok, no comment. =)

Alright, let me try this another way. Without simply bashing, please, what is wrong with a toon that has no fail heal scrolls, decent health/dps capability, and can handle most traps? Specific issues/fixes or referral to another build i dont mind... someone stepping in and sayin "oh that sucks" is moderately pointless IMO.

This was something I put together in about 15 mins because a guildie specfically requested a 18/XXX tempest ranger that could scroll heal UMD and do traps/locks. It was not a perfected build and was meant simply as a guide for him to start with.

There is no good reason to put so many points in charisma and so little in dexterity though. The extra reflex saves are more important than the bit more umd, imo.

Looks fine to me - better UMD is always handy & harder to raise than getting a couple more points in reflex saves, though it would probably be better to take that & the 2nd toughness at higher levels & shift your other feats downwards to lower levels so you can qualify for the PrE that much sooner, as a couple of extra points at very low levels likely wont make much real difference.
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was, now what's it is weird and scary to me.

Max concentration skill is a must on a self/scrollhealing character when the **** hits the fan. All your UMD and all your ranger devotion does nothing for you if you cannot cast that CMW or use that scroll if something hits you for 20 points.

    Max out concentration

Nothing, but there are more optimal ways of accomplishing the same things. You can see my Tempest trapmonkey for my approach. My two cents: extra DEX is more useful than extra CHA, especially since it means you don't need a DEX tome and can take D/M/SA chain sooner which will also let you move up Improved Crit to lvl 9 (I would start 18 / 14 / 14 / 12 / 8 / 8 or 16 / 14 / 16 / 14 / 8 / 8 depending on whether extra DPS or extra HPs & skill pts is more important); skip Chaotic / Lawful Outsider FEs and just take Evil Outsider - they don't stack and the number of non-evil non-neutral outsiders you fight is too small to be worth wasting feats on them (Undead, Giants, EOs, and Constructs would be my picks, roughly in that order); no Power Atk hurts your DPS (swap SF UMD for it); as Dragavon points out, if you want to do mid-combat heals, consider maxing Concentration.

You should have pointed him to the Exploiter and been done with it, it's a better build.

awesome input thanks all.. i had completely forgot the concentration part of scroll use lol. And as for the cha vs dex id have to look at what the UMD will actually end up and set the cha as needed then. I know the build definately wants no fail heal scrolls and I wasnt 100% sure if the exploiter had that or not.

Anyways I repeat.. thanks for the positive input folks.

If you're worried about charisma/umd just craft a tripple air spell point/haste clicke +6 Charisma skill item. Between that and a GH clickie, that is 10 points to UMD.

It's not a bad idea for a ranger to have one anyway, that way you have plenty of mana for buffing and then extra for self healing. I use mine in the goggle slot and just swap to tharnes.

However, going with ranger devotion and then empower heal instead of the second toughness is better overall. You should not be putting points into charisma and dumping dex that low since it will hinder your reflex save. Starting with an 11 dex means you can't start your tempest pre-reqs until you eat your +2 dex tome since dodge requires a 13 dex. This isn't a huge deal as honestly, you're probably better thf at low levels.

I'm also not sure why you take evil outside, lawful outsider and chaotic outsider. Evil outsider will cover all the devils and demons (actually it looks like it covers everying thing in lawful outsider). http://ddowiki.com/page/Favored_Enemy

Favored enemies should be something like:
    Undead
    Evil outsider
Construct (especially if you're planning to run the U11 stuff)
Elemantal and or Giant (or just pick one but look at the wiki first)

OP didn't mention if his guildie had monk (or cared about AC), but since you brought it up - the Exploiter.

It takes some gear, but UMD 39 isn't too hard to hit even with base CHA 8:

    23 ranks
    3 CHA bonus (base 8 + 2 tome + 6 item)
2 luck bonus (e.g., Head of Good Fortune)
3 competence bonus (e.g., Golden Cartouche)
1 enhancement bonus (e.g., Big Top)
4 Greater Heroism (e.g., Planar Gird)
    6 GS CHA skills
    42 UMD (45 w/Skill Focus UMD)

Some of that is easier to acquire than others, but as you can see there's some wiggle room. And you can use Human Versatility (Skill Boost) to provide +2-5 for 20 secs if you can't quite hit the mark.

One option would be to take SF UMD early on, then swap it out later for OTWF (to meet Tempest III pre-req) when you no longer need the extra +3.
