    Default Hide skill.

So, I've been wondering for quite a while now, just how does the hide skill work in this sort of setting. In shadows, I could see maybe a dark cloak or something being used to conceal your outline as you move along them.

But what about when you're under a light and a monster can look straight at you.

How does it work "realistically" in these situations?

When in sneak mode you will see between 1-4 eyes. One eye means there is less chance to be seen. 4 means higher. Color means nothing.

I understand that. I suppose they're just a percentage then. I just wonder why you can walk under a bright light, and still not be seen, is all.

You are not supposed to think like that.

Ok maybe if this helps you sleep at night, think about it like this, perhaps it is not a complete hide but a blending in as if you belong there as opposed to being an obvious threat to the onlookers whoever they might be.
Their chance to perceive you depends on their ability to see through your disguse.

Move silently is your ability to move in a non threatening maner or as a complete picture of your disguse.
Which of course does not always work and you are found out and they attack!

Surprise backstab does not mean your are invisible although you could be. It simply means the enemy is not expecting an attack to come from you when you are approaching the enemy from the rear. They are confident you are a 90lb weekling or whatever your disguse of non threatening nature would suggest you are.

That works. I suppose that also helps in understanding that Listen and Spot skills are both Wisdom based.

And I just wondered why I could stand just a few feet in front of something and just not be seen. I do a lot of stealth-play, so it comes up a lot in mind, is all!

    Thanks for your reply!

That's actually a really good description; I hadn't though about Hide being combined with the pnp-esque Disguise/Bluff.

This is what a good "DM" does for his players.

    Hint Turbine are you listening?

Sneaking is not about not being seen, it's about not being noticed. You are there in their visual field, but you position yourself in such a way that they don't notice that they are seeing you.

There is a monster in Hitchikers guide that will assume "if you cannot see it then it cannot see you". Put your towel over your head when you want to sneak.

I agree! That's a very good description! Awesomely done! +1!

It does, however, bring up the question of how much penalty there should be to your Hide skill when the monster sees you "unthreateningly" approaching them....with a short sword in your hand that's on fire....
All that is wrong with DDO, life, taxes, poltics, religion, music, fast food, education, the criminal justice system, the weather, society, the universe, and previously-discontinued-but-now-on-their-way-back snack cakes, is all the fault of Wizards of the Coast. I know this because Fred told me so, and Mind Flayers are smart.

Or like the bunny rabbit in Monty Pythons The Holy Grail. Such a cute bunny rabbit. Run Away Run Away before he bites your head off! The monster of ARRRGGGHHHH!
