Question 2/18 Fighter/Paladin DoS Build Needs Input

I'm planning on TR'ing shortly after I hit 20. Currently he's 16/2 Pal/Rog built off of Junt's Evasion Paladin which it and others are found at that link.

So far so good, especially since I got into a guild (Knights of the Silver Dragon) with active players and don't have to solo everything anymore.

That said, I wanted to be more use to the guild during out planned nights in general while still being able to run harder stuff solo. So I got to reading, and planning, and after about 6 hours in the character planner program I came up with this.

The whole point of this build is to be a primary/secondary DPS Tank that can self heal to help take the load off the cleric's.

Keep in mind I'm a fairly new player (started and stopped last Oct and then picked the game back up two months ago) and have no high end gear nor any real knowledge about said gear.

Here's the build, and some comments I added from my guild's forum as well:

    TR'd TWF DoS Human Pali

Since the reduction in WIS only reduces my mana pool by 12, will saves by 3, and evidently has no effect on the number of spells I can cast, only when since it'll be gear dependent, I went and made this build. It should pull more aggro from damage with TWF. note: There was another attempt at a THF DoS build with higher wis.

The only thing I really don't like about going 2 fighter is the loss of the capstone for more damage, albeit situational, and the loss of two spell slots. The latter would mean having to chose between deathward, holy sword, zeal, and cure serious. Obviously I'd have to have CS slotted at all time, and then use the others as necessary. I haven't tried to do a pure 20 paladin DoS, and don't have the energy tonight to try and ration feat slots right now, but I doubt I could pull off the self healing part of this build well without the fighter snaking so many of those TWF feats. As it stands I'm considering dropping OTWF for power attack, and probably will once his STR gets up there.

Take out improved critcal, and get a mineral II instead.

I like pally TWF, but go capstone.

The feats you need are damage

You shouldnt need oversized, your to hit should be fine, there are 2 feats you can switch out, thus making room for capstone.

You should definitely take Power Atk instead of OTWF. Don't really need Mental Toughness either. I would also consider starting CON 14 CHA 16 so you can add Divine Might III after +2 CHA tome.

Thanks for the input, I'm working it (and the forgotten 2 ranks into tumble to move around the battlefield in stance) into a pure 20 Pal now and will post once I get a chance.

After looking at the Martial Weapon list on the wiki I have to wonder if it's not worth the feat slot to go heavy pick/battleaxe/rapier/scimitar instead, especially the latter two given their extended crit range.

Does the Khopesh's x3 19-20 threat really outdo the others?

Here's the pure 20 paladin twf DoS (Khopesh) build. The reason I asked about rapier, and other weapons, is the lack of maximize in this build due to feat starvation.

Also I selected shield mastery over tower shield, any reason to chance? I also have the choice of diehard (autostabilization) and combat expertise (which is a non choice considering the INT req).

Also note that you can simply drop one str to make this a 32 point build, and I also intentionally kept the 16 con over the 16 cha as +2 dmg just doesn't seem that big of a deal to me.

Why not do a few VoDs, and get your Levik's set items, maybe even one +3 tome or two.
Why not do some shroud runs, and get your Concordant Opposition item to fuel your self-healing?
Why not do some DQs for a Torc?

Regardless if you go pure or not: Plan your Charisma in a way you hit the highest tier of Divine Might, including a Cha tome (+3, perhaps).

Why do you want to go Defender of Siberys?

You aren't going for AC, and you'd generate plenty of Hate with Divine Righteousness and KotC.

Right now Klarnak is a 16/2 Pal/Rog KotC Evasion with Rogue HP.

To respec him out as a KotC self healer I'd need a +3 heart of wood, which I may do now and then get his leveling gear for TR over the next few months. Actually this would be optimal in many ways as shifting from light armor to heavy wouldn't be that rough right now. The end game gear issue being one of the reasons I was going to opt for an early TR, and one of the big shifts I would have to make is going from light armor to heavy AC to be in a primary/secondary tank role. For example we did a VoN run and I only got some Vela action because our primary/secondaries got wiped and the clerics needed someone to grab her attention while they raised/healed them. It was honestly a great moment for me, but the initial, however long, amount of time I had my thumb stuck in my ass on a class that should be in the thick of things caused some reconsideration.

The DoS was for hate generation in general as it'll apply to more than evil outsiders. KotC is more popular apparently because ALL the end game nasties are evil outsiders (and they are 10 times easier to build). Hopefully this will change and provide some variety to end game play.

If I can get a general consensus that KotC with Divine Righteousness will pull enough hate then it's the much easier build to do as I'm not spending all these enhancements and feat slots on "stuff" I'll never use/want (ie shields and aura enhancements).

A TWF KotC with ES and DS draws plenty of quick aggro without Divine Righteousness; adding an extra +100% seals the deal.

The extra Hate from Divine Righteousness doesn't stack with the Hate from the DoS stances.

You'll rarely use the DoS stance in any situation where you aren't fighting an Evil Outsider raid boss; the penalty to movement is just too great.

In terms of multipliable damage, and in general:
    1 is always a miss
2 through (20 - threat) is a regular hit, if you have enough to-hit
(20 - threat + 1) through 20 is a critical threat, which is confirmed as a critical hit if you have enough to-hit and confirmation bonuses.

Therefore, for any given weapon with multiplier M and threat T, you have:
    1 * 0 + (20 - T - 2 + 1) * base + (20 - (20 - T + 1) + 1) * M * base
    = 0 + (19 - T) * base + T * M * base
    = 19 * base + T * (M - 1) * base

If you treat "base" as effectively constant, which for TWF is usually a good assumption, then the only thing that matters is T * (M - 1). The khopesh (with Improved Critical or Keen) gives a value of 8 for that quantity, the best of any base weapon. Picks, rapiers, and scimitars all work out to 6, the second best. (Battleaxe works out to 4, the second worst.)

With all that said, we are specifically interested in paladins, who have two abilities that work in novel ways: Divine Sacrifice (+1 to multiplier) and Smite Evil (+s to multiplier and threat, depending on the level of Exalted Smite). Divine Sacrifice favors the weapons with the largest threat regardless of multiplier, which means rapier/scimitar. Smite never favors the pick, and can favor the khopesh (0 or 2 ranks), the scimitar/rapier (3 ranks), or neither (1 or 4 ranks). Because Smites are relatively small contributions to overall DPS, even if you end up with exactly 3 ranks of Exalted Smite you still do more DPS overall with a khopesh, but the key with both DS and Smite is that they close the gap between the two weapon types. You also will tend to have less multipliable damage in general than classes such as fighters and barbarians, which lessens the impact of the khopesh's superior critical profile.

Long story short (too late), the khopesh will outdo everything else, but for your particular situation it's not by so much that you should feel you have to sacrifice the feat slot.
If I can get a general consensus that KotC with Divine Righteousness will pull enough hate then it's the much easier build to do as I'm not spending all these enhancements and feat slots on "stuff" I'll never use/want (ie shields and aura enhancements).
Divine Righteousness is an insane increase to threat. You would have to try to make a paladin that couldn't hold aggro with it.

Thanks a ton Kinerd and everyone else who helped me on this project. Even though I'll now go KotC it was a ginourmous learning experience working with both prestiges, different races, diff stat sets, and diff weapon profiles (thf and twf).

Khopesh is the best overall DPS choice for TWF, inc. paladins; but rapiers or scimitars are a decent alternative if feats are an issue, as the larger crit range meshes nicely with Exalted Smite & Divine Sacrifice. Particularly if it lets you stay pure for capstone rather than splashing for extra feats; for this build it seems like the must-haves are TWF x3, PA, Toughness, Maximize, and Quicken, with either IC Slash or khopesh as your 8th feat.

BTW, have a look at Aryenne for another take on a TWF self-healing paladin.

I had scanned the OP of the Aryenne thread at the recommendation of a guildie, but mostly dismissed it due to the 36 point build, but with all the advice I got from you all, and reading the entire 9 page thread, I came up a 32 point 18pal/2mnk build almost identical to Junts' and this pure 20 build:

Sadly there is no power attack, but it would work I think.

Power Atk is pretty important; on your pure build I would either drop khopesh and use scimitars or drop IC Slash and use min2 khopeshes.

On the Pure build, I'd definitely take Power Attack over Khopesh.

Get a couple of Tier 3 Epic Brigand's Cutlasses from Crystal Cove and you're good to go.

I'll keep the khopesh feat and swap ic slash out when I get the min2's I think.

Right now I'm going to go with the 18/2 monk since it's play style won't be drastically different from the 18/2 rogue he is now and I'll have time to then gather gear for a TR down the road.

    Thanks again everyone.

...Or you could just use Holy Sword scimitars/Epic Brigand's Cutlasses and save yourself a feat and 10 Large Scales. Scimitars aren't *that* much worse than Khopeshes.

Or just stay 18/2 until you get ESOS
